Mission: Impossible Ethan Hunt Costume Thread

Hello folks, after seeing the latest in the M:I franchise and discovering a lack of M:I related threads here on the forum, I have decided to cover one of the most iconic costumes in the series. Since I don’t have access to my files, I’ll have to post images later. What I can say is that my research has found that the eyeglasses were made by Jean Paul Gaultier and are of a more circular shape rather than an oval. While I haven’t pinpointed the exact ones yet, I have gotten close. The shoes are unique because they have some sort of black on purple design going for them. I have no idea about the harness, shirt, or pants but I do know that Ethan wears black gloves underneath the surgical ones. Finally, the headset is unique for having a flashlight attached, but that’s all I know.

Starting on post 23, I begin to dissect other outfits from the film.

I am pretty sure I heard or read the harness is a flying harness for cinema/theater but intentionally visible.

Thanks for the info, gentlemen. What’s unusual about this vest is that instead of just acting like a seat harness, it goes from the shoulders to the upper thighs with Velcro straps and wires fed through some grommets. For now, here’s some photos:

While on the hunt for the harness, I’ve decided to post some images of the glasses and headset:

Any ideas?

Great news everybody! After a long time of searching different glasses, I have finally identified the correct model: they are the Jean Paul Gaultier 55 9171 in all black. Here’s a photo:

I’ve identified the harness as having been created by the “stunt sewing team” (now known as amspec) and they still sell the parts for the harness, but not the harness itself. Ebay searches have been less than successful, and I haven’t found any images of the harness they sold. To my understanding, it was one of the company’s actual products.

Since deciding to look at the shoes, I realized that the shoes are unique in a few ways: one, they are made of some sort of black suede material with purple accents on trimming and stitching, and two, there’s a large rubber toe cap up front and the heel seems to be covered in rubber as well. Here’s a few photos:

One of the few things left to cover for this outfit are the two pairs of gloves. From what I know, the black gloves are made of a black synthetic material and have a separate thumb piece. I know there are some good screenshots from the scenes where Ethan is crawling through the vent. The surgical gloves are just clear latex, all I have to do is find some that match.

Not sure if this will help you, but I took these pics at Prop Store London last year.

These are unexpectedly helpful in finding better surgical gloves. Also, it looks like the headset mic became detached sometime before you took the images. These will also help with the jogging pants detail, as your photos show them in a good light.

I can’t believe I have to say this, but in all my searching, the most accurate headset I’ve been able to find so far is........One of the kid-sized headsets found in the double pack of some 1996 Mission: Impossible Walkie-Talkie Headsets. I mean, they do come with a flashlight holder and bear a closer resemblance to the real deal than you’d come to expect from a toy. Here’s some photos:

If it helps, the shoes are rock climbing shoes. An image search brought up similar shoes but no matches.

That’s some really helpful information! I’m getting much closer results now, just need to narrow them down some.

Re: 1996 Mission: Impossible Ethan Hunt “CIA Computer” Costume

Somehow, the sweatpants and shirt haven’t ended up being very easy. All the sweatpants I find are to advanced or have lots of branding all over, and they lack the black and white interior stripes. The shirt I haven’t found yet (most elastic cuff tees are multicolor), but I think I’ll find it. Does anyone think some mods can bring enough accuracy to those toy headsets? Anyways, here’s a photo link for parts of the costume, including the sweatpants detail:

Progress has slowed on the unidentified items of the costume, so I decided to reasearch a little prop for the costume. The prop in question is the macguffin of the film: it’s the NOC list. While it’s common knowledge that the list was stored on a clear-cased magneto optical disc, finding the exact one has been troublesome. The best image I could find seems to display it as a 230mb disc by a brand that starts with a V. and I’m unsure even at that. Here’s a couple photo links to show what I’m referring to:
