Stormbreaker 1:1 scale foam build

Love the letter etching! This is gonna look great painted up

Thanks man...never done burning with a soldering iron on foam before but luckily being an illustrator/graphic designer I have a steady hand...

Not long to go now, just got to finish the handle, the vines on the head and the butt then onto painting! Which is my favourite part

for the handle consider getting Arma-flex pipe insulation (at lowes/home depot) you can carve it a little with a dremel and then use a heat gun to make it even more organic looking.

- Example from my groot- painted with Angelus Paints...the small vine looking parts is window/door insulation

Wow, that looks great! I really like those smaller vines. I tried doing that on my stormbreaker handle, but the scale didn't look right.

the longer you hit them with the heat gun the more they shrink - just make sure you do it in a well ventilated space

Great advise man! One issue...we don’t have lowes/Home Depot in the UK :) but I can still do (which I was going to do) the detail as well...I’ve finished the handle foam now just starting with the modelling clay for the vines and I’ll etch with my dremel for details and stuff ;)

Update!

So I’ve dremelled the handle to get a more smooth organic look! I feel it came out really well...

Added bonus, I always felt the handle was coming out too thick but after smoothing it down its much thinner and feels better to hold...

Next I finished the root from Groots fingers holding the hammer together...using modelling clay has been a stroke of genius it’s really versatile and drys rock solid! And I have been able to more easily mold the roots around the head, only draw back it takes about a week for the clay to cure and dry fully (as it’s air dry) so a little annoying as I wanted to get the butt of the handle done today as well, but patience is a virtue and I’d rather wait for the roots to dry fully so the hammer can rest on its head when I do the butt if the handle...

Can’t wait to get to painting phase not long now...

Great build. I did notice that in the move, the blade portion (the lighter section of the axe side) is bigger that yours in proportion. Would you be able to modify your 3d image?

thanks man...I made my template from an image from the film, if I had the tools the blade would be more flat so that’s probably why it doesn’t look as big on my actual build as mines more rounded

Update, added more to the vines slightly to even out the sides, make it more accurate:

And finished the butt if the handle:

So that’s the build actually done...just need to wait for the clay to dry...hopefully next week will be the first and second coat of black plastidip...so I can the start painting (which is my favourite part)

Cannot wait for this to be finished!

Update, base coats done...I can get in to giving this bad boy the detail it needs...

Really starting to come together...

Update!

So Stormbreaker is pretty much finished!! The hammer and axe are completely painted...the handle, not completely happy with but it’s passable...I will likely get another brown and dry brush the handle and add abit more highlighting but for all intent and purposes she is finished :)
