James Gunn fired from GOTG 3

After whats been going on with Star Wars lately, Disney would appear to have their collective heads well and truly in the sand.

Have you met any one who was molested as a young child? Have you met any one who was raped? I have and pedophilia and rape are NOT a joking matter. Add to the fact one of his friends was arrested and convinced of child porn. So yeah, two different situations.

Yes to both your questions. As for what is and what isn't something people are allowed to joke about, thats personal taste. Having bad taste in humor or trying to be intentionally offensive is not a crime nor indicative of someone who may commit a crime. At least not in the US where Gunn resides.

So yeah, two different situations.

Well, you were the one trying to conflate two separate situations. I pointed out how they were different. Now you're saying they are indeed different, so I guess you're agreeing with me. Its hard to tell, really.

What I don't get is, if he knew this was an issue, and apologized for it back in 2012, why leave those tweets up all this time? Doesn't seem wise, especially if you're at the helm of one of Disney's billion dollar properties.

Side note: what sick and twisted nexus put him and Huddleston together? Kinda creepy.

I'm saying both used Twitter but each wrote different things.
Calling someone a derogatory term is not the same as condoning pedophilia.. if you read any of his tweets you will see he has fantasies abot it..

This is the internet. Even if he had deleted them back in 2012, you know there were people who took screenshots just waiting for a chance to bring them up again. Deleting them would just make it seem like he's trying to hide from his past and not truly sorry for what he said, but sorry he got caught. He owned up to it and moved on. As has already been stated, the fact these tweets resurfaced now had a lot more to do with Gunn's tweets regarding certain political figures. This was in no way done as a means to try and protect kids or any other noble cause.

I have read his tweets. I've followed him on Twitter for a long time. He never once condoned anything. Joking about something, no matter how horrendous is not condoning the behavior.

Then you need to reread some of his tweets. You realize fantasizing is condoning?
But all of this back and forth, is simply spinning wheels. He's gone and will most likely never work for Disney again.

Anyone here qualified to describe the differences between a few "jokes" on what is possibly the most sensitive of issues and what appears to be a consistent, obsessed pattern of behaviour on that most sensitive of issues? I would be most interested in your thoughts.

As I said, I've read the tweets. There was nothing that was condoning or showed him fantasizing about this stuff. Just horrible, unfunny, tasteless jokes. He was trying to be offensive and get a rise out of people. Essentially, he was trolling.

You know this for a fact?
There is nothing funny about making sexual jokes about children. Absolutely nothing. It's disgusting. As much as I enjoyed GOTG, good riddance. The punk should be put down.

Barr's and Gunn's situations just aren't the same.

Totally disagree. They both said very offensive things on social media and both paid the price for it. Doesn't matter if one person was supposedly joking and the other was supposedly making their deepest, darkest feelings known(which I'm not even sure you can prove to be the case). They said what they said and Disney had to show that they won't stand for it in any situation. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

I've made plenty of jokes about murder in my life. I've even fantasized about killing some a**holes that made my life difficult. (Remember being a teenager?)

Should all this make me a suspect? Get me fired? Put me on a permanent watch list? Murder is considered a worse crime than pedophilia.

The difference is that it's socially acceptable to joke and fantasize about murder.

This director made a ton of bad taste comments. But bad taste is not a crime.

I don’t think that the age of the tweets really matters, or the context, or why he wrote what he did. The only thing that matters here is that he’s made Disney look bad, in a way that couldn’t be easily explained away. I don’t think Disney really had much of a choice, given the snowball effect that usually happens with these things.

One person made offensive comments during the time of their employment. The other made offensive comments way prior to their relationship with their employer.

One employer was blindsided by an employee that unexpectedly opened a can of worms with a highly offensive tweet. The other employer almost certainly was well aware of their employee's prior online history and chose to only make it a problem with the Internet Mob told them it had to be an issue.

Here's the thing: While I personally find a lot of Gunn's historical Twitter content to be reprehensible, I also clearly see that he was making an attempt at performance art, no doubt inspired by Twitter phenoms like Badbanana. In poor and highly questionable taste? Absolutely. But we sometimes celebrate stories and movies that deal with troubling and very disturbing aspects of human behavior and we don't call for the lynch mob. Granted, it can be much more difficult to disassociate a person from their Twitter account than it is to separate them from a piece of fiction they write, or act in... but the fact is that ALL of social media is a manufactured persona. An act. A fabrication.

The only difference is the degree of fabrication.

Yeah, just jokes, just provoking, just an act, lynch mobs in action again. How about disgusting, deplorable and indefensible behaviour from a grown man in a position of great privilege and influence.

The guy was in his Forties when he continually made those disgusting and degrading tweets, how much more "growth" do you really need?

This. Absolutely no excuses!! He wasn't some silly naive 20 something, but an experienced grown adult man. I really wouldn't be surprised if he's already under some sort of investigation...

Apparently a guy he was corresponding with about some video he (Gunn) had linked to, is now serving time for possessing child porn. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of investigation.

What is so telling about this situation to me is he has addressed this, several times. He addressed and apologized just months before being hired by Disney. You’re telling me that Disney didn’t do a quick cursory glance at the guys history? No way. They had to have seen the articles, the tweets, and still decided it was ok for him to direct two movies. In fact, he has discussed it recently as this interview from 2017 shows. People are acting like this is a moral decision when it isn’t.. it’s all about the green folks. It was weaponized and Disney obviously decided it wasn’t good for them and ejected.

The only up-side I can possible see coming from this is perhaps a Taika Watiti helmed GOTG3? Sign me up. With James Gunn behind the scenes giving his input, of course.
