Platform 4: Ian McQue inspired first scratch build

Hi everyone. This will be the first project I've posted to the forum although I've been lurking for a while. I've always been impressed by the amazing scratch builds I see here, so I've decided to try one of my own. This build is based on some artwork by Ian McQue. I'm not sure what the source of the color illustration is, I found it during a google image search, but the black & white sketch is from his Instagram account.

I'm building this one in 1:35 scale to match the McQue models that are available from Industria Mechanika. I started working on this a couple of weeks ago and started off with an L shaped box to serve as the core of the build.

Once the core was built I added layers for the deck and front and rear "fins".

Next up I played around with some parts to add to the deck, and came up with this "control box" that I'll add somewhere behind the pilot. The red part is from an old Koh-I-Noor drafting graphite container I found at work. I'm not sure what the numbers on the top will look like under primer and paint, but they should be slightly visible. I figure it can serve as an engine system model number.

Over the last week I've worked some more on the body and added some weld lines, bolts, and detail bits.

That's where the build stands today. I want to do a little more detailing on the body, then I'll move on to the upper deck, the engine (behind the number 4), and the lower structure and fins. So far I'm happy with it. I'll post updates as they come.

I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions on making the red & white arched bits that are bolted to the upper deck in the illustration. I was probably going to try to heat form some polystyrene, although I think something metal would be more durable.

It's been a couple of weeks, and I had to take a break from this build for some 1:1 home improvement chores, but I've made a little progress.

I build the "engine compartment", and started adding details to it. I've also added the "fins" to the right side. I plan to add a little more to the left side, then the main body will be done.

Here's a detail view of the side fins. Each one is made up of 11 pieces. They aren't perfect, but I think they look good enough.

And the engine compartment and engine. There's still a lot of detailing to add to these pieces.

I managed to finish the engine today and the engine compartment. The rear wall of the compartment will be covered by the engine once it's in place so I'm not going to do any more detailing. Most of the engine will also be hard to see once in place so I tried to add details that will provide some visual interest when viewed from the back of the model.

Up next, the bottom frame and fins.
