The Definitive NIKE FOOTWEAR Tube Bag Thread

Hi BTTF 2 fans, It is amazing that this film turns 30 next year. So I am starting this thread to see if we can gather as much info about one of the more popular BTTF2 props (even though it does not get much screen time), the NIKE FOOTWEAR Tube Bag.

Over the years, there have been a few made in short runs and at this time, there are two builders (myself and joshslayton) making these very cool futurist sports bags.

Details that we would like to nail out are dimensions of the overall size, the angles on the end caps and of course the logo (which is optically distorted due to be stuck on a curved surface).

Materials aside, this is the thread to discuss all things TUBE BAG related.

Considering the end caps taper in I would be of the opinion that measurement would be both the body and the very end of the cap as the ends look like they line up for consistency in size to the ends of the bag

I have always taken it as the max size of the end cap making the body close to 10.5".

So with my first vacuum formed tube bag, the tool I used for the end cap was slightly undersized, so the whole bag came out a bit too small.

I have since redone everything to make it the same size as my earlier cast version.

The cast end caps (Image 1) are 11.5" at the widest part.

When I made my vacuum formed parts, I had to change out the tool and ended up with 10.5" end caps.

Back in 2013, my old man made me a vacuum forming end cap tool out of several layers of MDF. I decided to use that and the pulled psrts come out at 11.5".

The only difference is the size of the window is going to be a bit smaller.

I have made lids but not trimmed them yet.

Progress :)

I have decided to make the handle recess separate and today I made a new tool.

Shape is good but I think I need to shorten it a bit and tapper the sides so the vacuum formed plastic actually lets go.

Hey Cavx, how do you plan on attaching the nozzles to the main body? Glue? Or some kind of hardware?

I am rejiging to take the load off the end caps. I'll glue mine but they will be more cosmetic after the redesign. Infact my bag should work without the end caps. Stay tuned for more.

Still need to rework the handle recess and make these runners for the lids, then I can cut the ends out of the end caps.

Also might have found a way to give the end caps that more pointy edge. Will post images when I have this sorted.

Haven't quite finished this one but it is looking good. This is 22 X 11.5".
To make the window bigger will require me to make a new insert part. It will be tricky but should allow the whole end to be trimmed of tapered end cap and then fuse that to the new part.

The problem here is that I am thermoforming these parts and even though the end cap is tapered, it is not really enough to allow the tool to fall out of the pulled part.

And it is done except for the decal.
There are parts I want to change to make it more screen accurate but pretty happy with how this came out.

This bag is made from 4.5mm ABS and I honestly think 3mm is more than thick enough.

It needs a coat of flat black paint to hide the glue marks.

So I want to shorten the handle so there is a gap at each end. The way I have made the recess adds strength so the handle is really just for comfort.

I'm going to make the recess from 3 parts. Maybe the 3mm will vac form better than the 4.5mm. Will see.

End cap will be altered to have a larger window.

This is the first full size bag I have made with functioning lids and handles. It is big but cool looking. Just needs a big yellow Nike Footwear.

Looking forward to seeing your bag finished.

It seems that the 6 Jovan bags were made from cardboard tubes. Aaron Ward's 3 bags were also made from cardboard tubes.
So I might just be the first to make this in plastic and you, in fiberglass.
