Salzo V5 X-wing build: Red Leader

I forgot to mention....wires soldered together for Phantom engines and they are installed. I did a quick and dirty light test, and everything works. Glued the engines on.

Obligatory bad iPhone pic attached.

Wow, another update today. Lol

Cockpit mocked up inside the fuse, and our hapless hero trimmed to fit. No, that’s not the head/helmet I’m going to use, it’s just there to make sure Garvin Dreis fits properly in the cockpit. A good bit of his body was ground away.

I’ll have to run fiber, and paint the inside of the cockpit frame before installing the tub. I also have to figure out how to install the little IR remote receiver I’m going to use to turn on/off the lights. May try to make it look like the targeting computer. That would be nice if it works out, otherwise I’ll find an inconspicuous place to mount it.

Like a dog with a bone, I’m back on the brass cannon barrels. I reduced the weight of them by shortening the inner sleeves. Now they are only a little heavier than the resin/brass cannons. I like them much better.
I’ll have to pick up another piece of tubing st my LHS tomorrow to finish them.

Drilled the hole through the armature to pass the wires for the lower wings. I counterbored the hole in both ends to de-burr it. All done with a hand drill, you won’t need a drill press to do this.
Spending some time taking the wings off, and putting them back on. This is to see if there will be any difficulties doing it when the hull is assembled. I’d rather work out potential problems now, before the hull is built and painted, then to get an unpleasant surprise later.
So far, I’ve noted that the hex wrench for the armature bracket screws will probably have to be cut down a little bit. This will make it easier to install the wings later. No big deal.

Once I’m satisfied I’ve worked out all the potential kinks, I’ll start assembly of the fuselage.

I’ve a few things to do before closing up the fuse. I did fit the rear plate, as it has to be installed before the fuselage is glued together.

Shoukd have it it closed up this weekend, and ready for bodywork. I’m traveling a bit for work, so it might be a couple of weeks until it’s ready for paint.

Nice butt!!! I’ve always found the rear plate of the x-wings pretty interesting. I guess you could say I’m a butt man!

Got Garvin Dreis painted up. His helmet looks a little crusty, I may strip it and re-do it.
Fuse is ready to close up. I’ll do that this weekend.

Then, sand, prime, fill as required, and add all the styrene chips on fuselage/wings. Then off to the painter.

Fuse is closed up. Nose is attached. Time to start the bodywork.

The nose will take a good bit of sanding and filling to make the contours right.

Getting close to finishing this up, and off to Ben for paint.

Doing the bodywork now.

One observation...removing the lower wings on this model is a major PITA. It’s very difficult to get the hex wrench in to remove the screws, in particular, the lower forward screws. Took me about 30 mins of fumbling with it to get those 2 screws out. Very, very frustrating.

I haven’t updated this for awhile, as I’ve been traveling for work.

All the chip work on the fuse has been done, and I shot a little primer on it, and the wings this morning. Really all that’s left is to do is a little sanding and the chip work on the wing panels, and it’s off to Ben for paint work.

Chipping complete. Primed. Ready to head to Ben for paint in Red Leader’s scheme.

Now, to start on Red 2......
