Anakin Starkiller FX V2 - Aging Weathering & Stencil Tutorial (Master Thread)

Re: Anakin Starkiller FX V2 - Aging Weathering & Stencil Tutorial

Got my stencils and made some real progress last night/this morning :)

Paint is matte black Duracoat, I went for an extra thick coat but tried to vary the thickness a little. Plan is, after taking the paint off the grip rings and adding the brownish windvane section and it's had a day or so to cure, to polish it a little to smooth the transitions and vary the sheen, maybe throw it in a bag with a few nails/sharp objects and jostle it around to rough up the perfect flat surface a little :)

Hi Dann,

Dumb question but how did you get this result for your mystery chunk.

Not comfortable with checkering file.

Re: Anakin Starkiller FX V2 - Aging Weathering & Stencil Tutorial

ok guys I have to first apologize. I haven’t had a single living breathing moment to myself lately. I have been working ridiculous hours trying to help my brother set up a new barber location at night...

And still working construction during the day, I have about a week left of this life style then I’m going to be jobless and have a lot of free time on my hands. So you’ll see me living back on here!

Still got a lot to do...

Trent covered it, when doing my personal v2 I ripped the stencil. You can hear me explaining it to ethan in my video, that section one of the paint chips looks like pikachu.

I used some pieces I pulled off to replicate that area AFTER that photo was taken.

I still have yet to go in with my skewers and popsicle sticks and chip my black paint away.

Ethan’s #2 sticker came out flawless and you can see that in the video

Trent’s v2 I’m doing right now will be the best and most accurate v2 I’ve ever done so stay tuned for that

Another thing is I keep getting notifications for PMs. Once I get home one night before 10pm I’ll go through and answer all of them.

I don’t want anyone thinking I’m ignoring them, I’m just in a really big jam...

On another note, I starts writing this this morning but haven’t had a damn minute or free WiFi to post it..

Don’t bother buying these paints, they have waaaaaay too much metallic in them..

Ditching the copper paint idea and going to be looking at brasses and browns

Those are great! Any chance you plan to scan and share them?

Trying to figure out how to many these a pdf so they are the exact size

I can always take a aerial shot, and the you can print them out in different sizes until you get it to fit the other diameter of the emitter

Don't worry. what you're seeing is a combination of a few things.
1. Dan got it on ever so slightly shifted
2. His stencil tore, leaving a big open area
3. His is rotated differently, his camera has a vastly different lens and that photo was not taken under the same conditions as the prop. The pink circled area is where his stencil tore. He even talks about it in his tutorial.

Here's a (low rez to prevent copying) screenshot of the actual stencil file next to the same area. You also have to remember that one is a flat image and the other is curved so everything won't line up exactly between the two. That's what makes this so complicated.

Hi Dann,

Not comfortable with checkering file.
Are you asking how to use the file?

It can take a few minutes to get it started, just take your time and get some grooves going, using lighter strokes at first, then start another set of grooves 90 degrees, cutting across your first set of grooves. Then just cut deeper switching from your first set to your second set every ten or twenty strokes.

You'll end up with a pretty sharp set of checkers, I knocked mine back down a bit with a flat file to cut away some of the sharpness.

Maybe I'll do one more chunk and take some photos of the process this time.

Okay, so I'll try and explain this.

Put the chunk in your vise, and draw the file across with light to medium force about ten times to get some grooves going. After a few passes the file will index itself into your grooves, you'll feel it.

Then start going the other way, to make the crosshatch or checkering pattern. Again, do about as many passes as you did going the first direction.

Repeat all that, add a little oil if you like, and it's good to keep a file card handy if the teeth get clogged up.

When you're satisfied with your checkering, run a flat file across to dull the points a bit, and you should end up with something like what's in the last photo.

Re: Anakin Starkiller FX V2 - Aging Weathering & Stencil Tutorial

Got my stencils peeled off and polished the paint to give it a better sheen and blend the edges better with the hilt. Also got the windvane painted and I think I got the colour pretty close! Kind of hard to see in these pics but it's not just a solid colour, there's a lot going on :)

Just need to chip away at the flat black areas like inbetween the ribs and add a few more scratches and details and I'm there! :D

Beauitful! What color did you decide on the windvane?!

Beauitful! What color did you decide on the windvane?!

A varying mix of Citadel (Tin Bitz, Chestnut Ink, Black) and Tamiya (copper) paints applied in various layers with various methods (drybrush, airbrush, q-tip) that got burned with a blowtorch and polished on a wheel and dabbed with acetone. I was kind of just playing around until I got the effect I was after ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

tomleech wins the prize!! You are the first person to finish a V2 using the new stencils!
That looks fantastic! Excellent job!
Is there any way you'd let me post a (credited of course) pic of this on my thread so show what the finished product looks like?
