This looks great. Looking forward to seeing it put together. I'm hoping that maybe you'll offer just the body as a kit. Just be a cool piece to have sitting on the shelf

So ive been working quite a lot on the electronics design this last few days...

I was going to print my own PCBs but i dont have any toner and in the end I would never get the best quality from them...

With a little more research i have managed to find an insainly cheap PCB printers... JLCPCB... I can get my board printed for and delivered for about 10 quid.... I honestly never seen prices that good soooooo going to do that...
This also meant I didnt have to be really tight with my tracks and SMDs...
So i changed my design and went for TLC5947s to drive the majority of the leds.

This saves a tons of space (i dont have much) and allows me to make complex designs...

As a preview heres some 3D pics out of kicad... I still need to sort out the silk screen but should give you an idea....

Any updates? This is such a cool project! I love alternate versions of famous props. I've thought about some Star Trek concept props myself... there's never enough time to work on everything I want!

    Yep, heres an update....

Ive been working extensively on the screen animations for the display, theyre UI elements driven by code and not prerendered videos.... Using the Nextion Environment ive managed to get some decent effects of it...

Ive not done much work on the prop body itselt lately as Ive been waiting for parts to turn up.

I made the order for the PCB last week, and they've now been completed. I assume ill get them in the post within the next 2 weeks now.

Onve i have the PCBs i can start putting them together do a little testing and then start assembling the tricorder. I still need to work out what to make in what order. As I wont be able to fit some bits in if I make some other parts first

One other thing, Ive thought long and hard about this... I am going to weather the tricorder somewhat. Give it a little rust maybe a scratch and a bit of dirt... The idea behind it is it would make it more real.

One thing I didnt like about star trek voyager was its syndication curse. One week the ship is nearly destroyed and in ruins.... Next week its as good as new.

This tricorder, i want to give it a back story. It was a unit designed by starfleet RnD and was to be beta tested on voyager, boosted by bionural circuitry its the first tricorder of its kind.... And its been out in the delta quadrant for 7 years. Its going through some battles.... Its had a few scrapes.... Its not going to look pristine new.

It would also some of the few short comings of my printer

    Anyway

That is amazing. Emergency is spelled wrong on your graphic, unless, of course the UK spells it Emergancy.

I have a TOS tricorder that I would love to put a TOS-centric screen like that in.

Hi all, I need some advise.
Been thinking how best to print the button decals.
As some parts need to be back lit it makes it a little more complicated.

I was thinking colour laser on the back side of acetate, then spay with a frost paint?

Also I don't have a colour laser printer so I'll have to get this printed at a shop somewhere.

I didn't want to do ink jet, as it bleeds and spreads over the years.

On a quick Google I can't find any mass printer company that does back lit transparency prints... I guess it's a specialist market...

    Any tips?

    Also some news what's happening...

After some tests, I managed to do a silicone mould using sealant (caulk for you americans) and currently casting some clear resin parts.

Will post some pics when they're set. I should also get the pubs in the post sometime this week. So I'll be starting to assemble that too. Once I put it together and tests it all works I'll start fitting it into the body and start assembling the body too.

But if a chicken and egg scenario, I can't put the thing together without putting some electronics in first. But this also makes it much harder to paint and finish. I'll just have to accept some parts will be awkward to paint...

Oh also what colour should I do the main body Base? I guess same as later tng. What colour was that

    Pics tomorrow hopefully

There's a product called Duratrans by Blue River Digital that folks have been using lately for PADD and desktop viewer graphics. Everyone who uses it gives it rave reviews:

    http://discuss.fleetworkshop.org/t/t...aphics/2820/10

Another option would be along the lines of what you mentioned above - laser transparency backed with a thin white self adhesive vinyl (thin enough to transmit light). When using a transparency you need a white layer behind it or else your colors will be severely muted.

There are also some very nice inkjet self-adhesive vinyls out there now (inkjet has come a long way - I haven't seen inkjet prints from the last 10 or so years fade or bleed, particularly if they have a protective laminate). I like the products Papilio carries - their inkjet white waterproof glossy vinyl and matte laminate are my go-to for non-backlit items, but the vinyl is thin enough to work fairly well when backlit.

^Not to hijack the thread, but that Duratrans stuff is exactly what I've been looking for for a project I'm working on. Thanks for posting the link!

Not the update i wanted to give to be honest. But Royal Fail still hasnt delivered my PCBs yet... Its been about 3 weeks since dirty PCB shipped them :/

Anyway I wanted to say Ive started putting the electronics together and tested them out and found theyre fine and started assembling the Tricorder... but NOOoooooo.....

I do how ever have a couple of pics of some resin parts i cheaply casted in silicon sealant

They came out better than I thought they would... They still need cleaning up, get excess sanded filed off.... But yeah came out alright...

Not bad for 2 quid sealant :P

Well PCBs finally turned up... And ive started putting them together. And realised I dont have any 150ohm resistors D: So got them on order, hopefully should have them in a few days.

Anyway A pic showing the pcb. Needs loads of work. More parts to put on, some solder cleaning on those TLC5947s and then need to snap the board apart and solder the connectors between boards.

I have made a really irritating mistake in my design... its really irritating because i tried really hard to avoid this issue.

I got a dfx file out of f360 to help line up where some of the leds go. And the main green scanning bar on the front... well thats gone wrong. i dont know why i didnt notice it at the time when designing the board. But some how I managed to offset the whole bar array to the right by about 5-10mms, and whats worse, squashed it together a little too... I really dont know how i managed that...

I can get around it but its so stupid. ill have just to push the leds to the correct position, theres a good little bit of clearence between the pcb and front face...

    Anyway lookie

It looks like your starving the circuit of current, try running it from a power supply and not from the USB/serial board's power.

I put on a more higher capacity 5v, and yep behaves more correctly... Though a couple of leds are misbehaving. I think it's just a dodgy connection there.

Absolutely love this project and your professional layout..... I notice only a few decoupling caps and don't see any tantalum/electrolytic caps, unless they are on the backside of your board. You have a lot of clocks running on those boards and when it gets closed up there could be an issue with noise on your VCC, I'd take a quick look with a scope, might save a few headaches, just a thought. Great work so far, can't wait for the next update.

Thanks for the tip, Your probably right, i based my design on a led controler break out board, matching the main components... Im not a full expert by any means. But yes there might be some noise on VCC. What im likely to do when i put it together properly is im going to put a electrolytic and a ceramic on the main rails... Should help.

I really am going to tidy up this wireing when i start putting it into the tricorder properly.

Also ive discoverered using the flex cables as connection wires has been a mistake. Theyre simply too fragile and the soldered connections break too easily. So im going to probably replace most of them with some decent solid core ribbon cabling.

Just a little update... Got most of the electronics working now. I had a couple of little issues, one part was not getting enough power, that's sorted. But today I had some right hassle trying to get 3 of the led circuit to work.

For the most part im using 2 tlc5947's and a tlc5940 to drive the leds. That's pretty straightforward. But only when you're driving one led per channel which for the most part I am. However to save space and not need more drivers I wanted 3 channels to drive more than 1 led.
After some research I designed a circuit, that when the pwm channel is opened it would trigger a mosfet and drive the multiple leds.

Basically these extra leds were lit all the time nd I couldn't figure out for the life of me why. No shorts all the signals worked fine, no missing tracks or wires.... I was really scratching my head.

So I posted a circuit diagram online and linked it to a electronics Irc chan I'm in... Right away someone spotted the problem. I had my mosfets back to front

My mistake was I copied the circuit from an example online, but failed to notice that the pin number were flipped on the symbols they used.

Anyway. Easy fix. Desoldered, turned them round. Resoldered and tested. Worked perfectly....

Soooooo tomorrow... Getting the door circuitry working properly.

Hopefully I shouldn't have any real issue here. Should just need to do some editing to the arduino library I'm using...

Like I said earlier I'm using two types of tlc59 chips. Ones 24 channel ones 16. In theory the 47 chips should be able to shift the data to the 40. Will test tomorrow.

Once this is finished I'll start constructing the prop.
