Deckard's suit

Howdy, folks! First post. This gem came in the mail today:

A bit of inspiration. While taking a break from my Coyle PKM blaster a tiny voice reminded me: "you know how to sew." Nothing fancy, period clothes mostly. I thought I'd take a crack at Deckard's suit. I decided to go with a herringbone linen and dye it myself. I like the pattern, just need to de-pill after all the laundry processes:

Having survived the 80's, I'm in familiar territory. I started collecting movie stills, auction photos, and old patterns:

Trousers are a good starting place. I think they came out okay. I thought I'd post coat progress here.

Thanks! Good practice for the trench coat. I found some great water-proof poplin, slightly too dark, but water bounces off of it.

Here is the back of the coat with the belt. The belt sides just disappear into the seam.

Bathroom screen grab of the coat side just before he takes it off.

My take on the gigantic baggy outside pocket with the sleeve up for clarity.

Last, the strange low breast pocket. I just finished patterning the cuffs and hope to have them on this weekend.

Beautiful workmanship on that jacket:cool The good thing about it, it's the lack of a lining inside;) And YES, you can sew!!

Sorry it took so long. All that work on the suit coat just to cover it up. l lucked out by getting the last of some water-proof lining cotton material from Merchant and Mills. It's very light and wrinkles nicely. The quilting was a bear, but it came out okay. I used an Australian duster pattern combined with a 1980's raincoat. Thank god for the girl friend's nice Bernina to do all the top stitching and button holes.

I can take pictures when I finish. I don't have the button bands on yet.

I'm probably going to go with two rows of piping or inserts and a free strap that is only attached on the sleeve back. It seems to wrinkle up and move around quite a bit.

Quite a PITA. Sometimes the buttons are above the sleeve seam. Mostly not. In the scene where he is coming back to his apartment at the end the film one of the straps is open (torn?) and the buttons have weird tabs.

Thanks, Joberg! Bought the shirt from Magnoli. Still trying to make the black shirt darker.

The suit linen? It's from here:

I bought four or five samples and the terra cotta worked best. Dharma Trading Procion dyes are a joy to work with:

I tried Soft Orange, Orange Sorbet, and possibly Deep Orange. I dyed scraps on the stove till I got an orange I liked, and the contrasting herring bones went a darker shade of orange. I dyed all the fabric in the washer, the only downside was the pills.
