Kid's deluxe Boba Fett costume - the re-build

Ok - I'm keeping the original thread, but this is basically how, over a year, my kid and I started with a piece of crap and ended up with something we're both rather proud of...

This is pretty basic, so I didn't want to other the Dented Helmet, but can anyone confirm if the foam armour on the Rubies Deluxe kids costume is the same size regardless of the jumpsuit size? My kid is keen to go to a local comic con as Fett, and I was thinking of using the armour but attaching it to a better base (I can get a cheap used one that is otherwise too small).

Thanks

Ok... so the correct answer turned out to be it was a total piece of ***** that looked nothing like the promo shots (which I kinda knew - but I hoped the gauntlets would have been better at least...).

Still, with a few red lights and a few old beds, sorry - that was Deep Purple...

With a bit of PVA, some pilow slips, some cord, some velcro, some hoses, some sharpies, some foam, some fake hair, the sewing skills of a friend and a few odds and ends I had lying around, I got something he's happy with...FB_IMG_1517694517173.jpg

Ok - so it's not replica prop quality, but it's our first father and son build.... and things can only get better from here!

This was never intended to be a build thread or anything... but a tinted visor and cheap 3D-printed knees from eBay and some scratchbuilt gauntlets later..... we're down to the jumpsuit, body/shoukder armour and belt pouches.... I suspect only the latter may still be with us this time next year....FB_IMG_1523817377438.jpg

Thanks - that was a little surprise I added last night. He didn't know u til he suited up at the con we went to today. He was very happy with it.

So... this was just meant to be a bit of fun for my kid... but by the time we did our last Con in November year, the only part of the original costume left were the armour panels... plus the now signed helmet. He actually decided that be wanted to become a whole new character.... New helmet, new armour, new weaponry...

So.... what could a dad do...?

Well, it turns out despite having a low opinion of my creative skills, I have learned a thing or two hanging round here over the years. And despite my 'workshop' being the floor of the spare room (and not to be used for at least a week before guests), we set about on a father and son project.

I got the two-piece Rubies Jango helmet - given it was under-sized and lightweight, it should be pretty perfect for him. I glued it together, added extra plastic and the seams, puttied it, sanded, puttied it more, sanded, undercoated, puttied and sanded one last time....

Next up - a grey primer followed by a dark silver/steel base coat...

Ok... first attempt at masking fluid. I let my kid do it so we'll see how it turns out. Main basecoat of maroon (his choice - with black accents).

Meanwhile, I've had him putting layers of PVA on the foam armour panels, so we also got the metallic layer onto them this afternoon.

Masking done on the helmet and black added... a few more hours and we'll finally see if I'm managed something I've never done before (made a cool helmet) or something I'm well-experienced with (ie, a total mess...)

It worked... or at least we're both happy with it. Just the new visor to add and the ears need to be glued down (both lower sockets cracked on install). Added a couple of dummy LEDs to the rangefinder too.

Also finished the armour (for now at least).

Now... the gun. Plus he's asked for a monkey lizard to sit on his shoulder...

What have I started...?

Right... given a Kowakian Monkey Lizard is beyond me.... here's the gun. He wanted something like an EE-3, but different. He also like working features, so I thought I struck gold with this Nerf Spectre Rev 5 in a discount store.

First step was to add some T-track to the barrel extension.

Then, we added a third party sight (had to reverse it to get it to fit), stock and strap. We've family visiting for a few days so will start painting next weekend - the plan is that whilst it may not fire darts, he can still eject and spin the chamber.

I've added the full before and after shots to the first post, but here's another view. 12 months after buying the Rubies, and only the armour panels from the original remain.

So... the last surviving part of the original Rubies costume has gone. The foam armour panels have now been replaced with plastic versions.

The Rubies Delux was rubbish, but it has led to 18 months of family stress... er... fun(!) creating what he wore today.
