Making of Trico: the last guardian

Hi guys, new to the forum so thought I'd share my biggest project of 2017 and some of the many progress shots I took.

For the longest time I wanted to make a doll/replica of Trico from The Last Guardian. I hadn't done much casting before, but I have a lot of experience making plush toys/sculpting etc.

He took about 400 hrs all up, definitely my favourite project to date. His head, horns and feet are resin cast, his ears are silicone (with silicone airbrushing), his face and tail are covered in airbrushed faux fur with his body covered in approx 2000 individually trimmed, airbrushed and glued goose feathers. Trico is approx 16" tall and 26" long from nose to rump.

The head was sculpt and cast over a week or so. A whole lot of tweaks and overlays to try and get it as close as I could.

His body 'skeleton' was made with wire, pvc and epoxy. Foam was slowly added and carved. I changed his pose a few times till I found something I was happy with.

Ears were sculpted and cast 3 times till I got an ear size I was happy with. Then the ears were airbrushed with tinted silicone and furred with faux fur.

His foam body was skinned in felt to smooth it out. I also drew on guidelines for his feather colours/shades.

Approx 2000 grey goose feathers were trimmed to scale, airbrushed (varying from light to dark) and hot glued onto the base form. It took a very long time but was incredibly satisfying to see come together. Getting all the gradients in there was tricky but worth it.

His little chicke wings were made from feathers glued to a simple sandwich of foam over a wire skeleton.

The face was furred with faux fur, using masking tape to extract the pattern. Flocking was added where the fabric met the nose to smooth the transition.
The face was airbrushed once the feathers were complete.

To finish up, a friend of mine who does taxidermy sent me some real fox whiskers. I tried horse hair and some other kinds but none of them had that natural taper/scale to suit his face.

That's about it, a whole lot of trial and error went into him. Most parts were remade several times, but I'm still thrilled with how he came out. I'm hoping to make him a diorama of some ruins and craggy rock to sit him on, and potentially commission a needle felted boy to scale so he can climb all over him.

The level of detail is really impressive. I don't know the character, but it looks like a real animal... which I think is a huge compliment. Great work.

I simply loved the game!! Loaded it up and played right through it (The Last Guardian on PS4).

I myself am a game programmer and Trico is an AI to look up to!! What a great character!!!

Now your interpretation of it is terribly realistic if we can say so!! It’s an instant flicker or amazement when I saw the pictures .. almost tempted to go back to playing it now!

A job well worth the time invested!!!

:thumbsup

Oh wow! I love this!. You did a wonderful job!! I just got this game for my five-year-old and I've been marveling at how beautiful it all is!!
