Seeing it again in a few hours. I liked TFA better on subsequent viewings, maybe this will be similar.

Information on Snoke' s background is important. He possibly the most powerful dark side user we've seen on screen - and somehow it was important enough to note that he's not a Sith, but his background is of little value?

This movie is great eye candy, but of little/no substance. The excuse that kids get along with it is tired too. There's Lego movies and Rebels for that. Plus children don't have a hard time grasping adult themes and activity. LOTR for example. Or ESB, that was hardly a kids film.

I think the blowback from this is going to kill Rian's new trilogy. One can only hope anyhow. Its,been made clear that Disney doesn't get it.

But - there's enough moments to make it worthwhile for me to see again. Can't wait to see some fan edits.

I bet we will get more of this in 9 ESPECIALLY since JJ is back at the helm and he started these questions up.

Be careful what you wish for :)

We didn't know why Anakin fell either, until the prequels....

Personally, i thought it was great. The only part that bugs me is Luke's ending. All my childhood hero's are gone and apparently post ROTJ their lives sucked. 9 was supposed to feature Leia (in theory) and now that'll never happen. I went from feeling like a 7 year old again for 2:20 to feeling old at the end.

I'll agree the Casino (Canto Bight) didn't seem overly necessary, but as others have said, maybe it resolves in 9.

I agree with both sides on Snoke. Would have been nice to know more, but it really wasn't necessary. We didn't know squat about the emperor for 16 years other than he was the emperor and shot lightning from his hands. Hell, we never even learned his motivation, really, in the prequels. For revenge. Revenge for what? His teacher was Darth Plagueis? That was nothing but a name, meaningless really. Where did maul come from? People liked maul...but down the shaft - the end.

Just got back form seeing it.

I'm trying to figure out what I just saw.

My first reaction is disappointment. I enjoyed every single Star Wars film up til now.

Something was very wrong with how the story was edited. Like it jumped around, scenes needed to play out a little longer or something.

There were so many poorly composited shots. Did they film a bunch of scenes at the last minute in front of a blue screen?
It was a nice idea to go back and use a puppet for Yoda, but it too looked bad. I'll take the CGI Yoda from TPM any day over what we got.
As I type I know think the entire story of the Gambling planet was unnecessary as was Del Torro's character. I think Finn and Rose could have snuck aboard the Star Destroyer in an easier more efficient way.
Speaking of unnecessary characters.... Phasma was about as important in this film then she was in TFA.

The way Luke ended. I hated it. I knew something was up when he appeared on the rebel base and had short hair and his beard was darker.
This force projection of himself at the base to give time for every one to escape was good but he didn't have to die / surrender to the force or whatever.
I think the reveal would have been so much better if he had lived. I think it would have shown how strong he was with the force that he could do something like that and then join the Resistance.

I'm not sure why there even needs to be a sequel now. The end of TFA felt like the end of the entire story.

Okay.... this was weird. I haven't read this thread so a lot of this probably has already been said.

I'm in my late teens, and I went to see this with a group of similarly aged friends, all varying in their level of fan-ness, and most thought it was like a decent, high budget fan film.

Leias Mary poppins thing? What the heck? It would have been a wonderful, beautiful scene had the flying thing been subconscious.
Otherwise I really liked Leia in this, I felt she could have a bit more serious at some points.
Darn, I feel guilty criticizing that.

Luke was... misused, in my opinion. Mark Hamill was brilliant, but... I feel like his personality was on point, but his CHARACTER was waaaaaay off. Post ROTJ Luke would never draw his weapon on an unarmed teenager, no matter his dark side potential. Maybe I'm a naive idiot, but I've always thought that going forward after Vaders death he would be more purely good and closer to the light side of the force than, say, Leia. His death scene was good, but way too soon. Especially since that means that (presumably) there will be only one OT main sentient left. If they kill Chewie in IX I am seriously walking out of the theater.

Luke's end scene with Kylo was decent.

Rey and Kylos fight with the Solo Cups was really cool, still not a fan of the design.

Snoke was very underused. I really liked what we saw of him but he needed character. In my mind he'll just be a sort of former colleague to Luke, a historian of the force at Luke's "jedi academy".

The cinematography bothered me. Thank goodness there weren't lense flares every two seconds like in TFA tho. But there were some very un-star warsy things that stood out to me like sore thumbs. The slow motion lightsaber swing in the Luke/Kylo fight and the Rey narration of the Dark Side force nexus thing on Ach To were the most prominent.

I'm honestly not going to bother touching on the redundancy of the plot. An originally executed one, yes. But the repetition is incredibly blatant. I don't know how people don't see it.

How do people think this is the best star wars??? Or even that this is their second favorite after TFA??? I mean, good on ya mate, but it boggles me.

Although the fight with the red guards was well choreographed, I kept wondering why those guys were a challenge. They treated it all like a sword fight, not a battle with force users.

No once did they use a force push or choke on the guards.

Luke did explain the drawing of the saber...a moment of weakness, sensing the level of darkness and how far gone he already was and then was instant ashamed and was turning it off when kylo awoke, and frankly, justifiably freaked. In that version, i wouldn't say it was raise, just ignited..

Well word of mouth may be spreading as TLJ is now predicted to underperform. Could this be the “Batman & Robin” of the Star Wars series?

I’ve spoken to some friends in the industry and the plot holes, ie...Frozen Space Leia; Luke’s lack of story; Rey’s parentage; Snoke’s non-story; 18 hour time frame for movie; remake of ESB plot line, etc...are becoming more and more glaring and problematic upon multiple viewing.

As with the prequels, I call it the Star Wars Hype Effect. I am surprised at how many friends who loved every Star Wars movie made, including the prequels, said they didn’t know how they felt about this movie after walking out. I’m not sure a second viewing is going to change that for the better as I picked up more issues the second time.

I’m just amazed that no one at Disney/Lucasfilm recognized the script issues even in the editing room. Wow they reshot Rogue One; fired the director to Boba Fett movie; and fired the directors to Solo and reshot 80% of The footage. With that much attention to those films and willingness to reshoot 80% of Solo to be sure we get a great movie, then what happened here with TLJ? Why did no one speak up and point out the glaring issues with the script? Was this an intentional FU to the Star Wars fans or just laziness?

All Disney/Lucasfilm can do with 9 is bring in a totally new Super Duper Super Bad Guy that we never heard of to be the new antagonist and let Rey redeem Kylo, ie they will just remake ROTJ because that’s where the story is now required to go.

I cannot believe the suits at Disney saw this film and said “Wow. Awesome. Best Star Wars ever! Let’s give Rian three more film to F’up!!”

It's nice that everyone had such happy and wonderful lives after their triumphant victory over the empire in ROTJ.

Luke living an isolated life in a self imposed exile until he dies.
Han scraping together a life as a smuggler after failed marriage and losing his beloved ship......until he dies.
Lea having a failed marriage and the knowledge that he son is genocidal maniac complicit in the death of millions.

I hope Lando's at least living it up!

Yeah, it's a big reason why I reject this trilogy, they trashed their lives and truly made them behave in ways in my opinion
make them no longer the same characters for me, much lesser characters.. And I hope Billy Dee stays far away from this.

I saw this last night, but wanted to let it sink in before posting my two cents. Overall, it was a bit disappointing for me.

I think the closing shot of TFA was deeply moving; a powerful, highly anticipated moment delivered completely absent of dialogue. The score, the actors performances......... despite my overall thoughts of that movie, I think that scene is classic emotional cinematic storytelling. In TLJ, that moment was completely ruined with an absurd, misguided attempt at humor. I think that moment (along with the ridiculous Hux / Poe exchange) set the tone for me.

Most of the humor in this film missed it's mark, not all, but most. I don't understand how they keep getting this wrong. The "someone get this walking carpet out of my way" attempt at cheap humor worked in the late 70s, not so much now. I know humor has it's place and can work, Rogue One with K2SO got it right, it was perfect. Luke milking that animal and drinking it, what the hell was I watching.

I don't have the strength to go on and on, like the movie. I didn't like how Poe was written in this movie, Laura Dern's performance was just not convincing for me for someone in that position, I didn't like how they portrayed Luke (and his decision on how to handle Ben) in the academy flashback scenes, Phasma was again a joke, Benecio del Torro's character missed the mark, just wasn't feeling it. And Snoke, who is he, how did he get to power, then he dies and that's it! Do they wait to explain that in Episode IX when I no longer care?

I enjoyed seeing Yoda interact with Luke again, I think Driver and Ridley did a good job, but was overall disappointed in how Luke was used. The movie just didn't work for me, I don't hate it, there were some good parts.........I just wish it could have been as good as the trailer. I'm bummed.........
