That was specifically about Carrie Fisher, Mark has said repeatedly he would love to come back for IX.

AH... gotcha :)

Yep. It's all in how you can take an audio snippet out of context to the overall bigger-picture conversation.

Good point. Abraham Lincoln did say not to believe everything you hear or read on the internet. ;)

:facepalm Read between the lines Bryan. That was specifically about his distaste for what was done to the OT characters. Used to relaunch this 'franchise'. To get all the fans on board.
Every single one of us was excited that our much loved heroes would be getting back together for one last adventure, even the actors themselves. I don't believe any SW fan didn't nerd out at the prospect.

So, come back for what? He certainly isn't needed in the wafer thin plot. They F'd Luke Skywalker in the A. and by extension Mark Hamill. He was so obviously used as a marketing gimmick. It's sad and shameful.
The only way he's doing anything in IX is contractual obligation just like his praise for RJ and the sequel trilogy.
But Mark is one of us, a real fan of Star Wars and you can hear his words in many interviews are laced with sarcasm and irony because towing the party line and being true to the fans have now become polar opposites.
They killed Luke and they broke Mark :cry

I’m proud to see him standing his ground. When the movie first came out he was very vocal on how upset he was at his characters story in TLJ... and how it wasn’t the like skywalker character...

Disney HAD to give him a gag order which lasted a few months.. glad to see he’s still standing his ground

I have the same belief as hamill right now.. I don’t care if Luke returns in ep9... I don’t care to even see the film

The two situations are comparable only in the fact that they are not the physical person. The rest of the elements making up those scenarios couldn't be further apart. But we can stretch as far as people would like to try, and knit together some coherent genius embedded deep within Ep8.

I do agree I/we should not have to analyze the plot and character arcs in a SW film to this extent to try and extrapolate a few good little nuggets. And as fans, maybe this is us reaching for something from the film to cling too.

Like the movie or not, that is an interesting observation. Was it intentional or thought out by RJ, who knows? The callback with R2 and the Leia hologram before he does his projection to save her yet again is poetic and seems well thought out.

It served no purpose at all. It would have been far more logical for Artoo to have a new message from Leia and far more difficult for Luke to ignore.

RJ asked JJ to send R2 with Rey at the end of TFA instead of BB8 obviously because he wanted that iconic shot for himself. It was Artoo's only scene. What a hack!

I found very little in that movie to be well thought out.

So true.

So, SO true.

I watched it last night without having seen or read any spoilers. What a freakin mess! Its as if nothing was truly accomplished in ROTJ, I'm probably going to watch the despecialized Star Wars tonight just to remind myself why Luke is awesome. The best part was his fight with Kylo, I actually liked the reveal that he was a projection. Then they show him have a grabber from the effort?! Really?! That's the best they could come up with?
This reminds me why I never went past the first Highlander film, if it doesn't need a sequel don't make one.

Are you insinuating that I've focused on not wanting to enjoy it?

I paid three times to find a way to enjoy it, thought maybe i missed something, maybe I wasn't reading between the lines or something. To be fair, there's elements I appreciated, (mostly performance and visuals) I gave it a fair shake, it failed.

Turns out, MY focus isn't the issue.

You didn't miss anything. The movie was ****.

When they announced that Disney would be making episodes 7, 8 and 9 I think most fans thought that it would center on the original cast passing the torch on to the next generation of freedom fighters. We expected that the series would carry on the story based on the previous 6 episodes that came before so that they would tie together in some cohesive way.

Apparently what Disney had in mind was to extinguish the torch and mock the fans that carried it loyally for all of these years. Say what you want about the creative choices of the movie but the level of disdain and outright disrespect that Rian Johnson has shown to Mark Hamill and the critics of his film says everything we need to know. I honestly don't think there is any other way to see it and I question when people defend what he says in interviews. It boggles my mind how people make excuses for such arrogant behavior and I feel bad for Mark Hamill having to accompany him on these press junkets to promote the bluray. It's clear that there is tension between them.

People may say that we take these things too personally, but when the fans are literally insulted and told that what they thought was so special is not and then Disney still expects the fans to flock mindlessly to the theater and buy the merchandise it's simply delusional.

It's painfully obvious that Mark Hamill is not pleased with the direction this whole thing has taken. For every "nice" thing he has said he never fails to mention his distaste for the sequel trilogy. He may do it in a joking way but there is truth to his words otherwise he wouldn't keep bringing it up. He is holding back too because he is contractually obligated to keep in line. If the powers that be treat Luke Skywalker himself with such disrespect then what makes people think they have any respect left for the fans?

This is so true. I believe it was implied right from the start but in reality they were used simply as marketing tools.
Now let's take a moment to think about this. Diseaseny and LFL had the three of them together. Everything was in place for one more awesome adventure with the heroes we have loved for forty years and they totally F'd up. They blew it.
Carrie Fisher is dead, Han Solo is dead, Luke Skywalker is dead. Now that opportunity is gone FOREVER It will NEVER happen.

"Let the past die, kill it if you have to." That's the message of this movie. I hate that quote more and more every time I hear or read it.

Only just seen this a few days ago. It has almost no redeeming qualities, awful film.

Pacing and tone is all over the place.
The Resistance fleet vs FO fleet is a boring tortoise vs tortoise race
Daisy Ridley's acting is extremely wooden and Luke is plain miserable. No noteworthy relationship develops between the two.
Yoda was an imposter, looked, sounded and acted wrong.
Finn and his Prequel-esque Casino side story is totally redundant.
Admiral PurpleHair was not an interesting character and added nothing to the story.
Lea's Mary Poppins impression is laughable.
Unlike the cringeworthy humour which falls completely flat.
Battle on Crait was like a bad impression of the Battle of Hoth with none of the excitement or tension.

I could go on but instead I'd rather just not care anymore. I'l always cherish the OT but modern Star Wars is dead as far as I'm concerned.

I'm with Eifion on this ... I love Star Wars and im a completionist to the point where i even have the Phantom Menace .. but i absolutely will not ever place this abysmal mess of a film in my Star Wars collection. Not just because i detest it but i wont give more money to own something I wish to God id never had to sit through in the first place. So for me the original Skywalker story effectively ended with Jedi. I actually wish i now didnt own TFA's as its now a hangnail story that ends with the utterly pointless death of a major character... anyhoo what i think is irrelevant but id be very interested to see the Sales figures for Download, DVD and Blu Ray for this film versus TFA's ... i bet its also a bit polarizing

Bring on Solo ... at least it was written by two screenwriters, Kasdan & Son rather than two supposed fanboys and has a good Director to boot.
