There is a lot of discussion already online about the current state of movie making, not just Star Wars, where sequels are actually soft reboots and they really are just remake of prior films. Look at Jurassic World which is really just Jurassic Park remake and the current sequel appears to be a remake of The Lost World. Nothing new as everyone is just out of fresh ideas.

Maybe because Rian already used the ending of ROTJ in this movie then episode 9 will have to be original or will they start just remaking the PT?

Or maybe they believe.

Hey It worked 20 years ago for the 20 year olds... maybe it will work again now , 20 years later for the 20 year olds

Apologies if this has been discussed already but can someone explain to me why TLJ copied ESB and ROTJ so much?

I took my daughter (10 yrs old) to see the film she loved it had a great time didn't care about the ESB/ ROTJ reboots but she still noticed them.

TLJ is a really nicely made film (with some exceptions) but I don't understand the process by which the director and the producers go "Lets copy these scenes from these movies that's a good idea!" To me it's distracting, it pulls me out of the film and it's like they've run out of ideas or something which can't be true.

ok thanks :)

I basically agree with DarthLee on this.

We have essentially had a reboot for the Jonny come latelys who were either to young, or they are older and simply regret missing out on something that they have been jealous of, in such a cool group of people.

The Geeks that they used to ridicule have had something important in their lives... passion. They want in and they want their kids in.

The most interesting thing is where it goes from here? This was just like Empire and Jedi in one.

For the first time since walking out of the viewing of TFA I can't call it.

Disney could somehow just do a deeper Jedi ripoff next time but I hope we finally get some originality.

I don't think it is copying them as much as being inspired by things we feel familiar with. Heck, Lucas himself did the same thing with OT/PT and was proud of it and called it cycles or something.

He called it “Poetry.” Lol

Again I stand by my statements. You don’t have to agree. That’s what’s makes this a great place to discuss and debate.

For all of you keeping score, THIS is all that matters. The future of the franchise is in her hands not all of us.

Exactly. Ryan provided Mark with his single greatest performance on film in his life and he knows it and appreciates it.

Love the film. Hate the film

The future for Disney/StarWars.. is to hopefully grab non SW fans or who do not know any back story.. and make them believe in the Force.

I haven’t seen much talk about the art direction in this movie. If there was one aspect of the Disney movies I thought I could count on, it was that they were safely back in the hands of people who knew how to recreate the look and feel of the OT. TFA, and Rogue One especially, made me feel comfortable in ways the Lucas prequels didn’t. What happened? Snokes red room looked like a green screen set with a red wall. The movie was littered with sets and scenes like that. And the casino planet was completely outside the Star Wars universe. I didn’t even think the lightsabers looked very good. The attention to detail just wasn’t there.

And when they are old enough to realise the difference between what is a great film and what is a corporate money grab, they will drop it like a hot potatoe

By that time, Disney has made it.. sad to say.. but maybe a smart idea they have....

They better still carry alot of Luke, Vadar and Yoda costumes though.

I know its hard being ill with Star Wars sometimes @Jaitea

Every now and then it will throw up something that you love, like Rogue One. (Did I mention that I love Rogue One) and that's enough :)
I loved Rogue one too. It was still funny but never felt forced or too slapstick like last jedi. And it actually took itself more seriously and had heart. I actually cared for Jyn Erso in a way I never cared about any of the characters in the new trilogy.

Another quick fan theory I've come up with: What if Snoke was a creation of Kylo Ren? A Wizard of Oz sort of false leader. I don't think it's true, but a case might be made. If Kylo was the one pulling the strings, and the use of Snoke all that was done to try to make Rey join him, and also to manipulate Hux, it might make sense why Snoke was killed off so easily.

I have about a penny's worth of thoughts to add;
I liked it - I thought overall it was a more interesting movie than TFA. I'm still interested in knowing what happens with Rey - and I thought seeing Ben/Kylo go back and forth (from hesitating to fire on Leia) only to really commit himself at the end as Supreme Leader was well done. The humor was nice in my eyes - it actually landed for the most part whereas the PT stuff never really did. I loved seeing Luke just toss the Graflex, especially after two years of Graflex-mania with the prop-building groups. Finn/Rose/DJ was an interesting enough subplot - I thought showing the war-profiteering was poignant and apropos. The stampede was pretty fun too, and I liked that they freed the animals. Poe's character development was well placed, and shows how he actually is learning and adapting to the situations at hand.

Where this series goes from here is now up-in-the-air to me; We still haven't seen the Knights of Ren, still need to know more about Rey, we need a new lightsaber. Based on the last few minutes, I don't think Episode IX will come directly after VIII, because there's clearly a need for the resistance/rebellion to grow again before they can stand up to the First/New Order. I'm hoping that IX takes us beyond what OT and TFA/TLJ showed us, and I'm genuinely looking forward to it.

After an ill advised journey to reddit:

I'd love to hear some fans complain about the impossibility of Jack's beans containing the energy to produce a beanstalk to the clouds, or parse the character of Cinderella (that prince would have spotted her for trailer trash in a fancy gown ten miles away--unrealistic, reeeeeeeeeee!).

There are some valid criticisms of TLJ but some people are nitpicking at Beautiful Mind levels of OCD. No story could hold up to it.

Reddit: a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Are you employed by Disney?

J/K;)

Wow, I guess Mark Hamill is trying to cheer up Rian Johnson after he's been reading all of those fan reactions for the last 3 days. :lol

Seriously, though, in every interview I've seen with him Johnson genuinely seems like one of the nicest guys walking the face of the Earth so I do feel bad for him if he's in fact been reading/hearing all of the backlash, but at the same time I have to say it's all deserved because he made some truly baffling(and terrible) choices with this movie.

Nope - just liked it honestly. It's not ESB, and it's not the OT at all, but I was fine with the direction it went. I didn't put a lot of effort into speculating the storylines that could play out after TFA, so I had relatively few expectations. One thing I would have liked was some better resolution on Rey's background. Other than that - I thought it was fine.

Leia Poppins was probably the low point - but I would have been less happy if that was her exit from the series.
