M.I.N.I.O.N / Death's Head 2 Costume build
Hello Everyone!
This is my first post to your wonderful forum. There's a time and place for everything and after 25 years of having this cyborg tattooed on my back it's time to make him a reality!
I've been working since Oct on a foam costume and my plan is to wear it to Emerald City Comic Con 2018 in March.

What I'm going for is MINION from the first issue. I want all the straps and ammo pouches and shoulder armor. I like the look of MINION before he gets changed into Death's Head 2. I will be making two masks; one MINION complete and one Death's Head 2 which is broken on left side of face.
I own the original blueprint drawn for the comics by Liam Sharp, I have the cover of issue #1 tattooed on my back, and I've also built him in 3D MAYA (every damn part!)
I have a couple weeks of vacation coming up this month and I plan to finish as much as I can during that time.

I pretty much have all the pieces in place, now I need to refine/detail and paint. Much of what is there are placeholders and will be rebuilt. I'm already working on another mask/helmet as the one in picture was just my first try at anything foam. The left arm is 'done' and painted with colored Plastidip. Everything will be fine tuned soon.

The Cranial Disruption Syphon will be a build of it's own. Along with that I'll build at least one more weapon arm, something like a giant cyber claw with guns and blades.
I bought a voice changer for 'robot voice'...I may or may not use it. The right eye is cybernetic/bionic so there will be a light there.
Still have a ton of work to do ...but at this point I can see he's all there. Any comment and suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Minion's left arm is blue on shoulder and forearm with silver biceps, the forearm also has gold bands with circles in center.

Here's what I have, painted with metallic PlastiDip. I made the forearm to fit and now after adding the thin layer for the seams and adding the gold bands it's getting tight. Hope I don't have to re-make it. I might be able to thin it out a little bit on the inside with my Dremel. It fits but it's snug. The upper arm fits well, both parts are comfortable enough to wear for hours with no issues. I might try and add the segments to the thigh armor tomorrow.

Working on the shoulder armors...there is only a couple pictures of Minion in full armor before he get's it torn off. The left shoulder armor is very non-descript. Looks like it was modeled off of shoulder muscles. So what I see is five rounded pointed objects that curve over his shoulder and it is attached by straps that connect to the double chest straps.
I cut the spikes out of foam, painted them blue, then with contact cement I wrapped them in vinyl mesh. Using scissors,a heat gun, and a torch lighter I got a tight wrap around each spike. These were then glued together in a curve using hot glue and more mesh to bind it together.

It needed some real-world design hardware so I came up with a base support and PlastiDiped it black.

Attached a belt slide to each end and red nylon webbing for straps.

For something that looked very plain in the drawing I'm happy with how this has turned out. Now on to the other side.

On vacation and getting some work done on Minion! The right arm needed the segmented metal look so I cut out strips of foam and with contact cement applied them to the right arm with a slight gap in between each strip.

When done this was sprayed with black Plastidip and then Deep Sea Blue Plastidip and Hyper Silver Plastidip.

The right shoulder armor is drawn fairly simple, so I tried to take the shape that was there and make it real world with a little more detail.

The piece was cut out of foam and shaped with a heat gun then sprayed in black plastidip. Nylon hex mesh was then glued on. The border piece was cut out and glued on top of everything. The mesh was taped off and the border sprayed with black plastidip then Black Obsidian Plastidip. A bottom support piece was cut and sprayed black and glued on bottom.

Minion how he looks at the moment. I got some spiral wire wrap and flex tube wire wrap in mail for 'hair'. Some will be attached to ports in his back and the loose ones will have some wire in them with frayed ends as they were ripped out in a fight.

One of the best pictures of the ab armor.

Here it is when I started it.

A couple shots after adding mesh and plastidip. The top piece looks more blue, so I'll have to address that.
But I like how it's coming.

Minion's mid-section is red flexible cables & wires. So that's what I have...

thumbnail_IMG_20171231_154759.jpg
These are the side pieces of the 'belt', there is also a center back piece not pictured.
Foam with foam dowels and plastic flex tubing held with contact cement and tape.

thumbnail_IMG_20180102_135911.jpg
The left side of the belt and the back center piece. All tubes will be red, everything else will be dark metallic blue.

Getting it put together. The codpiece snaps into the abs and a strap goes between the legs and snaps to the back center of the belt. I still need to add snap buckles to the belt to snug it all together under the abs.
Maybe the boots next, Yes?

Getting close to the finish, still have boots and a few other things to do.

New helmet built, 'hair' cables attached and half of them with a detail paint. I'll get to the rest in a bit.
Light put into 'bionic eye'. Cranial Disruption Syphon built with flashing light in barrel.
New straps and hardware, new pack built. Still need to build one more.
Throat tubes painted and attached. Ab tubes painted and attached.
Moving forward......30 days till comicon!

Test drive, Yes?

thumbnail_20180127_225207.jpgthumbnail_20180127_225215.jpgthumbnail_20180127_225226.jpg

I just started working on the Death's Head head that I'll carry in left hand.
Costume test reveals many changes I'll have to make before it's 'done'.
I still have a lot to do, but I think this is going to work, Yes?

Costume was 'ready' for Emerald City Comic Con 2018. I had a BLAST!!! I was in the finals for the costume contest! It was a wonderful weekend! I can't wait till my next cosplay.
The costume will be redesigned and rebuilt piece by piece to make better. First the helmet will be redesigned so I can see and breath.
More pictures to come.
Thank you for all the comments and likes.

Just a few new updates.

New cross-hair targeting laser. The LED light was cool but I wanted something better. I looked at smart-glasses that would give me a Heads-Up-Display and none of them really gave me what I was looking for. I was looking a lasers for my weapon arm and a BFG that I'll be building and the cross-hair laser was just what I needed!
laser crosshair.jpglaser targeter.jpglaser targeting eye 1.jpg

I also started working on the 'Blade Configuration' bladed arm cannon.
I bought a toy fog machine that will be put inside with the fog coming out of the 'smoking barrel' of the plasma cannon. The blades are just a rough toss together, I'll rebuild the whole thing when I get the final placement of all the blades. It's different every time it was drawn as it's 'liquid metal' so it's about getting the right feel for it.
LASERS....it will have lots of lasers. I found lasers with big-beams and laser diodes for .30 cents so I'll have a purple big beam in the cannon center with maybe a dozen red thin beams ringed around it and a blue big beam on each side of the barrel, I'll wire up a couple of push buttons onto a glove to turn on the fog and another for the lasers.

The face....For this build I made MINION as he was in issue #1...what I mean is the face hadn't been broken yet. Half way into issue #1 in a fight he gets his left jaw broken off exposing more of his skinless face. I had bought a prosthetic skull face that I was going to use but it wasn't what I wanted....needed more teeth and longer jaws.

So I'm thinking of getting this for the meat face and building a new helmet around this mask. The new helmet will be Death's Head II as it will have the broken left jaw and exposed face.

Other upgrade on the list will be new big badass platform combat boots, a rebuild of the legs, a Big ****ing Gun for left hand with lasers and internal fog machine, foam pouches will be rebuilt out of leather., new helmet made of Worbla....lots on my list.

Wow! That turned out amazing. I like the interpretations you made to art to give it tons of detail - the mesh on the shoulders is perfect. Also liking that new blade arm, that’s going to be awesome. :)

Thanks Man! This was my first cosplay build and I'm really happy about how it turned out. I had so much fun with the build and going to comicon that I'll just continue making this better for next year. I've redesigned pretty much everything and thought about how to do each part better. The pouches worked good for actually holding my stuff but I'm going to make a few high tech grenades that will look cool and really hold my water and snacks

Thanks for the message and checking out my build. :)

Done enough to show off. New helmet : abs plastic and worbla, welding helmet harness inside with padding, cross-hair targeting laser in right eye, 'super stereo' bionic ears and headphones, Under-Armor balaclava with jaw and teeth the magnetically attach to inside of helmet. comfortable.

It hurt to do it, but I had to break his jaw. As much as I really love the complete helmet now he looks correct.
