Chief Jim Hopper Costume and Props Thread

Hopper mug and knife:

S1E1 when Hopper arrives at the station he grabs a mug from amongst several sitting on the table. They appear to have random graphics on them, in other words they don't appear to be official mugs with the police logo etc.

Here you can see (blurry!) the mug he's about to pick up. Unfortunately he picks it up with the plain side facing front, so as he walks around the station we can't see what it has on it.

I couldn't get a good look at it in the scene with Hopper and Joyce at Hopper's desk.

What you can see sitting on his desk is a different mug, with trees

So... when Hopper says "mornings are for coffee and contemplation" is he merely repeating a saying that appears on one of those random mugs? It sounds like the sort of thing a coffee mug might say.

There's a different scene where you can get a pretty good look at his knife. It's exposed, not in a sheath:

UPDATE: Later in this thread the exact knife is identified. Thanks!

I've not seen mention of the McFarlane action figure. I notice a couple of odd things about his holster, one is that it's too dark, another is that it has an open bottom and the pistol sticks right through. Holsters typically have a closed bottom. The pistol appears to be a Rick Grimes pistol with 6" barrel rather than the Hopper pistol with 4" barrel.

About his F-Troop style hat, I think it's just a matter of this particular hat getting smashed in the blister pack.

The coffee mug appears to be plain on both sides, while we can see in S1E1 that the mug he picks up has printing on one side. Other issues are that he's not wearing an undershirt, and the US flag patch is an ordinary one, not the incorrect US flag patch seen on the show.

I quibble with some of the colours: the hat, the holster, the pants, and the shoes are not quite right.

Perhaps of interest is that before the figure went into production McFarlane showed photos of a prototype which varied from the production figure in certain ways. The most noticeable thing is that the prototype has two interchangeable heads, with hat and without.

Also perhaps of interest is the collection of Stranger Things Season One costumes which were on display at the Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing (FIDM) here in Los Angeles as part of their 11th Annual Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design show.

I missed this show, sorry to say.

Looks like the Season 2 belt.

Funny that they buttoned the shirt pocket flaps- Hopper rarely does.

And the pistol appears blued rather than nickel or stainless.

I noticed the difference between the McFarlane figure's avoirdupois and the FIDM mannequin's slenderness.

Perhaps relatively unimportant in cosplay, but I'm the same height as David Harbour and I'm at this very moment gulping White Russians in an attempt to achieve a screen-accurate shape :thumbsup

Also put together the hair-band bracelet. I couldn't find anything that looked close enough or the right color, so I ordered a blue elastic chord in a roll about 2mm diam, then did a 3 strand braid for the band. Looks close to the screen shots, so it's good enough for the con costume for me.

Finished distressing and darkening my Stetson Stratoliner for my Hopper hat. It looks a bit darker in person, and my camera on my phone sucks, but I'm all in all happy with the results.

That hat looks fantastic! Is that the Caribou? I saw a Stratoliner in Caribou in person at a hat shop and it looked to be a very good colour.

EDIT: I eventually bought a Strat in Caribou, here:

Yes, it was Caribou. I did a dark wash of acrylic sprayed in several passes - it's how we'd distress or tone down costume pieces for the stage, seemed to work well for this, I just watered it down and slowly built the layers. Has a nice worn-in look now. The hat band was removed and I did some brush aging to create the dark thin "band" around the base of the crown, using the shots of the real hat as reference.

Yes I have to do that. I was just going to use watered-down Liquitex which is my go-to.

Do we ever see Hopper using his pen or even just out of his pocket? I can't recall and have to re-watch the series. I'm 99.9% sure I've identified the exact pen and it's not a Bic. ;)

Just started re-watching the first episode of season two and confirmed my pen theory 100%. They are Kikkerland retro pens, available on Amazon in a set of five. Hopper has the pale yellow top with either tan or blue bottom, if I had to guess I would say tan bottom to match his uniform. Other officer has black top with blue bottom. Nancy uses green top with pale yellow bottom to edit Steve's paper. I have a set and the Hopper pen looks anything from banana yellow to cream depending on lighting just like on the show. Pens match season one as well. :thumbsup

Nice catch! I've ordered a set - they look so close to the Bic Clique, but it makes since as the other pens in the pack appear elsewhere in the show. I'll post a comparison once they arrive.

That's great, thanks!

One question: I just checked on Amazon and the 5-pen set shown comes with two with the pale yellow tops. Did your set come like that? Or is the photo just a sample, and each batch varies randomly?

BTW I can relate to the pen quest thing: for my Dr Jones Sr cosplay I looked at hundreds of vintage pens on Ebay for months until I finally came across the exact pen, made in Germany in the 1950s.

Got my Kirkland pens in, thought I'd post a comparison of the 2 yellow top ones against my vintage yellow Bic Clique - you can see there's actually quite a bit of difference between them. The Kirkland is certainly the correct pen.

Cool, thanks!

I have mine on order. (Kikkerland pen set from Amazon.)

Yes it looks just like the screen pen, an awesome find you guys!

EDIT: They came, I photographed them against khaki pants, and next a grey t-shirt, to show how different they look in the same light but against different background colours. To the right is the ivory vintage pen I was initially using. (That's the combinations as they came, I'm switching them around a bit for the costume.)

I do want my cosplay pen to be an actual working pen, for those times when I need a pen at Cons. Ditto the pen I use with my Dr Jones cosplay, it's a functioning vintage pen, which I do use sometimes.

Yes I'm re-watching S1E1 and in the very first Hopper scene, where he's getting dressed, you can see him putting the pen in his pocket.

It appears to have the yellow top with the white bottom.

In the closeup of Hopper putting the pen in the pocket slot the pen's top looks like a strong yellow. The rest of the time the pen top looks like a very pale yellow. In the two photos I took above of the pens you can see this apparent change in colour even in the same light.

The continuity people did a great job in the scene where Hopper arrives at the Police Station and in later scenes: the pen isn't pushed all the way down, but is as high as possible in the shirt slot and still be clipped. That's the sort of detail that often gets overlooked by Continuity, and one might expect to see the pen at various heights from shot to shot and scene to scene.

The fit and feel of these pants seems correct. The belt loops are fairly wide . It would be easy to add flaps but getting matching fabric would be toughhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171030/23ad5337d1d3a1aadf8bdc10de3e50cf.jpg

I don't think it's been mentioned but Flying Cross, the maker of the shirts, makes matching pants in Silver Tan that come with the back pocket flaps.

Their site calls them Command Pants Item #3900 Style T7-918

rua4XJx.jpg

Here's a screen shot of the Flying Cross site showing these pants.

Wry3X5n.jpg

UPDATE:

I just now (17 January) ordered the pants online from Galls.

They're not listed on their site, I had to call customer service at 800-477-7766 and custom order them. Galls calls them Item Number ZY048.

UPDATE:

Received the pants. They are super-comfortable and fit great. Here they are, on the left, with Dickies on the right. The Dickies were picked from several colours to hand at the shop, being the colour closest to the shirt. All of the Dickies were too yellow-ochre, this pair just a tad, some far too yellow. As you can see the Flying Cross pants are more of a "pink" (like the old Officers Pinks) have the pocket flaps and wider belt loops.

I did a bit of a deep dive on the shirt. I haven't verified any of these but they are good candidates.
I do believe what Hopper wears is the wool/gabardine based on the puff around the pocket flap stitching.

Holster:

Putting aside the various makers (Don Hume etc), the "border patrol" holster is also known as a "Bill Jordan holster", or "Jordan holster"

The S&W66 is a "K frame".

So any "Bill Jordan/border patrol" style holster in brown basket weave for a 4" K-frame S&W should work.
Of the previously mentioned Hume holsters, this would be a ' #1 4" ' (number one, four inch) style.

Just had time to take a quick look and confirmed from S1E1 it is indeed the tan bottom. Also, the KIKKERLAND wordmark is still present. :thumbsup
