C3PO full figure

About two years ago, I started researching how to build my own C3PO. Almost there, just some hand work (Pistons, black palms etc) and it'll be finished. Huge thanks to Chris Bartlett (TK409.com) Jim Sleeth for their superb parts. There are huge challenges to achieve the gold chrome finish and assemble everything but I think it's been worth it.

Very nice, when I saw the title I thought it a costume for fuller figured wearer.....lol...whoops. Is it wearable or a static statue? Of course now you'll need an R2 unit to stand next to him.... and get him out of trouble. Was the chrome done with vacuum metallization or did you find another method?

Thanks, I might start an R2D2 next year. If you are small enough sub 150lbs and 5' 7" you could wear my suit. I found a spray painter who produced the gold chrome with paint! Incredible process but cheaper than vacuum metallising and much more robust. Highly recommend it. Same process as used by West Coast Customs in LA to create that 'Tron' Audi car.

Hi everyone and thanks for your kind comments. The paint process is well guarded by those who know. I didn't even attempt it. I found a company in Sunderland, England who specialise in the process. It's a combination of temperature, base layers and mixing chemical paints to achieve the chrome look then a tinted clear coat to whatever chrome colour you want. They are: hydromonkeys.com or spraychromed.com - the same company. Contact Richard Calam on +44 (0) 191 447 0689. Fantastic service and attention to detail from Richard's team of paint experts. Some of my C3PO parts are photographed as samples of work on the spraychromed.com website!

Thanks for this info! So this isn't really a "vacuum metallization" process but another (somewhat complicated) way to paint C3PO to get the chromed look?

I say this, because above RPF member "spacebob" mentioned Gordon Tarpleys youtube videos. These seem to be a DIFFERENT process then?

Sorry for the confusion, I know getting the 3PO paintwork just right is difficult and somewhat illusive! It's what has kept me from tackling the project! :(

Darthwhitey, thanks. Yes this is a painting process, not the traditional vacuum metalising process. The painting method is best left to 'specialists' with proper temperature controlled ovens and full in house prep. Then you get the mirror chrome finish. It really is worth paying for. The people at West Coast Customs in LA were some of the first pioneers of this process which is now worldwide. Perhaps some day, a commercially available 'DIY' kit will become available but might take years. There are simply too many temperature and time variants to make it a 'one step in a can' option at the moment. Thanks again for your comments and interest. All the best for future projects.

Thanks!! :)
