I am on the last tweaks of my needle saw design. Thought I would post a video of me using one and get some thoughts and opinions from the RPF. The latest build is the photo and the video is the last version in action. What do you think?

I want one! Is the design inspired by a tattoo machine? How clean are the edges it makes when you use it to cut all the way through? What are you using for the saw blades themselves?
 
Yes based on a rotary tattoo machine. It has a 6-7mm stroke though and if used as a tattoo machine it would filet the recipient, so don't use it for that! The blade is 0.021 music wire sharpened to a point like a pencil on sandpaper or a sharpening stone. Here is a couple rough samples attached. The cut is much cleaner than expected. What likely happens is that the wire punches holes (10000 rpm) but since the needle heats up a bit it sinters as it cuts... I am debating making these to sell but I'll provide plans and files to make your own shortly. All open hardware-ish

For those that use Onshape here are the 3D files so you can 3D print your own:

For the 180 size motor (slot car motor)

For the 280 size motor (somewhat standard dc motor)

NOTES: I'll get on a write up and video tutorial on how to make them soon but for those of you mechanically inclined this may be enough to get started. To get access to the files you will need to sign up to Onshape.com it is TOTALY worth it and free.

1. Motor needs to be 10watt so a 5V 2A motor or a 12V 1A or......
2. Best wire to use on this is piano wire 0.021" diameter you can get this from unwinding a low E string on a guitar
3. Buy a foot pedal and put it inline between the power source and the saw.
4. Right click on a part in Onshape and choose export and input the settings for a STL file of your choice.
