[COMPLETE] Skyrim-Deathbrand (Stalhrim) armor

Re: Skyrim-Deathbrand (Stalhrim) armor

I've been seeing your updates on Instagram, keep looking better and better :D
Dam n, what's your username ? I can't find you.
Wow. Foam Goals :eek
I still have a long way to go, I started in 2016.

I finished the arm plates.

The part of this build that scared the the most was the cloth pieces. I'm afraid of anything involving sewing because it's not forgiving (you cannot clean a seam or correct your mistakes easily). Worse, I do not know how to draft patterns.

So I thought "let just follow a tutorial". I found great tutorials, but as always, I was unable to follow instructions...I just like to do things my way. So I made a tape pattern, like one would do for a form fitting armor piece. I started with the pants and taped one of my leg and half of my butt (clothes are supposed to be symmetric...). I did the same thing for my upper body (half of my chest and an arm). I got help from a friend, I couldn't do this alone. I wore jeans and a sweater underneath to simulate the thickness of the fabric I was going to use.

That brings us to my second problem. While the heavy version of this set makes your character bulky, the Deathbrand and light version are...well, lighter. My character looks like she's wearing skin tight clothes and I didn't feel like it was compatible with the idea of arming pants and vest. I went to my local fabric store, looking for fake fur (I still haven't found any white one and might end up ordering from the Internet or sacrificing my poor IKEA rug). Still, I found slightly elastic quilted fabric. Too bad it's wasn't available in brown. I ended up getting some light blue one, thinking "I've dyed synthetic fabric before, I can do it again". My first test wasn't too bad, in fact (good thing I have access to an airbrush, so far I've only used it on fabric by the way...).

I sewed a shirt and pants with my tape patterns. It fits perfectly and I managed to not screw the sleeves up...I'll try to take a picture later today.

Re: Skyrim-Deathbrand (Stalhrim) armor

I finished the back of the chestplate and painted it (no weathering). unlike the front, the stalhrim part doesn't have any seam, I cut a slit at the back instead (I don't know how to explain it in English...).

I'm currently working on the shoulderpates.

Re: Skyrim-Deathbrand (Stalhrim) armor

I finished the shoulderplates and taped them to the rest to see how it looked.

Yesterday I went looking for a book I could use for the Oghma Infinium. I got an old one for 5€ from a second hand shop (Le Troc de l'Île).

In the same store, I stumbled across what looked like a dusty sheep pelt, stuck under a pretty nice collection of rusty saws. I finally got it as well, solving the white fur problem.

I made a pattern for the Oghma Infinium. I plan on cutting the pieces out of craft foam and cover them in liquid latex or something similar.

Re: Skyrim-Deathbrand (Stalhrim) armor

I finished it and went to the con. So here is a really big update on this build !

I'm not gonna talk about the remaining textured armor pieces because the techniques were the same for all of them.

About the vambraces: I painted the stalhrim parts

22829142_726026534273172_3689580645744859751_o.jpg

I then made the "base" of the vambraces out of EVA foam, textured with aluminum foil. I glued a zipper for practical reasons. The straps (craft foam covered in pleather), are attached to the stalhrim pieces, and I just slip them on the "leather" vambrace. I finally used fake fur (RIP my Ikea rug) painted with diluted acrylics (you can see the differences between the original color and the weathered version on this picture).

My glove pattern was made with the same technique I used for the rest of the clothes. I glued synthetic padding instead of faux fur because said fur was too long for the fingers.

I also finished the Oghma Infinium (I'm afraid I do not have any pictures of the painted version for the moment, but they will come). It's basically an old book with a craft foam cover.

22791525_725192877689871_1521743096242272399_o.jpg

The shoes are cheap slippers covered in faux leather and painted with acrylics.

22859669_727027954173030_3593695446671768969_o.jpg

All the straps and belt are craft foam covered in pleather and then sewed (since they have a seam, even if mine is basically fake). Some of the fur parts are just pieces of the rug, while some others have a foam core (like the collar on the picture below).

22859872_727462010796291_8598244962750027252_o.jpg
Note: the shoulderplates are attached with elastic bands, so it doesn't restric my movements.

I painted my helm and battleaxe. The colors look really different from one picture to another because of the iridescent paint.

I took a lot of progress pictures (including painting steps), so I can provide them if you have any questions.

The con was in my hometown (Marseille in France), here are a few pictures I got from the week-end (so you can see the difference of color between them).

Wow. WOW. Fantastic work, I can only imagine how tedious that texture work must have been. Everything turned out amazing, it looks great! Congrats on completing this project! :thumbsup

Thanks guys !

I updated this outfit:
-I added an actual gambeson, I quilted my own fabric and then weathered it with acrylic paint and an old brush
-It got new rivets, I 3D modeled and printed them
-It got new belt buckles, 3D printed as well
-I added the vertical straps that were missing on the chest
-I made Mehrune's Razor (3D modeled and printed, the scabbard is half foam half 3D)
-I made an Elder Scroll (half foam, half 3D)

This project upgrade was the first I used 3D modeling and printing for. I got a 3D printer in January, the contest was in February, I knew nothing about 3D modeling and printing and I had very little time. My very first model was an Amulet of Articulation, the second one was Mehrune's Razor, and the Elder Scroll right after that. I used Fusion 360 because it's really easy to begin with (I didn't read anything about it and dived into the software like I always do, I didn't have any issues).

I took some progress pictures:

GAMBESON
The shirt, you lace it up on the sides (the sleeves are removable, that's why they don't appear here). The lining is an old bed sheet.
20180214_114251.jpg

The original fabric was pale brown, I lightly rubbed the whole thing with reddish brown acrylic to change the color (I really REALLY suck at sewing and clothes patterning by the way). I made trousers as well.

RIVETS AND BELT BUCKLES
Nothing to say on the 3D models, it was really straightforward. I textured the belt accessories with Flexbond (it was an experiment, and it was a bit ****ty)

rivets.jpg

Even if these pieces weren't the first I 3D modeled, they were the first I cleaned and painted. I should have sanded them more (well, I had to start somewhere). Here you can see the Flexbond texture.

MEHRUNE'S RAZOR
I had fun making this model (second one I had ever made, it had a lot of defects, sorry).
26730946_760577020818123_2372361552622118367_n.jpg

I had made a 3D model for the scabbard as well, but because of the lack of time I ended up making most of it out of foam, and only printing the ornaments.
I have a picture taken the night before the con, it wasn't even fully painted (and it's missing the circle in the middle of the daedric "O").

THE ELDER SCROLL
The finished product is not great, mostly because of the lack of time. But I'm still glad I made it. It will have a V2 for sure, with the actual scroll this time and not the just the case. The center part is foam, it was a few days before the con, I would have had time to model it, but not print and clean it.
Here is the model I made for the rest:
eldeer.jpg

Once printed, I added details with dimensional fabric paint on both 3D and foam parts (probably because I didn't want to have the same Scroll as everyone else).
detail.jpg

This picture gives you an idea of the size (I scaled it with a rule of three using a screenshot of my character wearing the scroll of his back -I love that mod). Yes, I'm wearing my helm the wrong way.
helm.jpg
The whole thing was basically painted the night before the con. I couldn't see **** and improvised a lot, so don't except something beautiful. Once I find a picture of it from the con I'll post it there.

I entered the selections for the French Cosplay Cup, a national contest were cosplayers are selected per region. It was my fourth time entering (well, it sure doesn't help when the judges are seamstresses and not crafters...). This time I was also handicapped by my 3D printed parts, a fair amount of cosplayers see 3D printing as cheating, and a few even think it shouldn't be allowed during cosplay contests... So I made sure to explain how much of the pain it was during prejudging. I still think Yaya Han (who was one of the judges) saved my ass this time, she isn't as narrow minded as some French cosplayers when it comes to 3D...Plus for the first time, some of the judges knew how to make stuff out of EVA.
Anyway, for this contest, half of the points are for your costume and half for the skit. I got selected this time, the finals are on December 1st. The character I chose for the occasion is Valkyr from Warframe by the way.

ADDITIONAL PROPS
I later decided to build new props. I wanted a shield, because I'd never made a shield before. Sadly, I wasn't fond of the stalhrim shield in Skyrim, so I made the one from ESO.
29351907_795639010645257_4069901819164544264_o(1).jpg
The sword has an aluminum pipe as a core, the rest is EVA foam. They were made in roughly two days, for another convention... I took some WIP pictures, if someone is interested in how I made those, I will post them.

Very cool! That looks great for being on a short schedule. I always look at that scroll when I play the game trying to figure out how to make one. I think without sculpting skills, 3D printing is the best way to go. There's people on here who occasionally stick their noses up at 3D printing, but it's just like any other tool. The worst part is the people who can't finish them afterwords. They just shoot some paint on it without filling print lines.
