Kylo Ren BladeBuilders Toy (modified/weathered to be more accurate)

I picked up the BladeBuilders Kylo Ren lightsaber a couple of years ago (just after I saw TFA) but I've never been a fan of how obvious the "plastic toy" appearance is.

So, inspired by builds like these.......

....... I've decided to do some modifications of my own. ;)

I started by sanding the entire lightsaber with a piece of 150-grit sandpaper to remove the plastic sheen and leave a rougher surface for the paint to stick to.

(I also took this opportunity to remove all the copyright rubbish from the back of the saber)

With the most tedious stage over with, I moved onto the fun part: weathering!

I tried to think about where the most dirt would have accumulated over the years, then applied the paint more thickly in these areas. I then added a much thinner wash to strategic areas around the rest of the lightsaber, to emulate rust. IMO the scratches from the sandpaper add to the aged/damaged appearance.

Hmm, filling in that hole is definitely on the to-do list for future modifications/fine tuning. I think I'll leave the blades for now; every so often I like to unleash my inner child and swing the saber around like a madman [emoji3] (which is useful if you're ever in the mood for a Kylo Ren-style temper tantrum [emoji23])

I'll definitely look into the Disney saber at some point - it would certainly make a nice V.2 - but at the moment I'm concentrating on my second lightsaber project (this time a metal scratchbuild - separate thread coming soon ;) )

A couple of months ago I decided to repaint this to look more like the prop we see in TLJ. Here’s a side-by-side, “before and after” type photo showing my mods against the original toy
