Bandai Millennium Falcon Vehicle Model 006 - TheHutt

Heya,

being a long-time lurker, I finally decided to start some building projects on my own. I was entertaining the thought of getting a model of the Millennium Falcon for some while, but could not decide whether the 1/144 or 1/72 one. The question answered itself automatically with the release of Bandai's Vehicle series which is actually fitting into a hand palm. My shelf space is limited, so these turned out to be the best options for me.

For starters, I studied the unfinished project by DanielB which was quite a good help in methodology and color selection. This was the first time I tried out airbrushing with acrylic paint and I quite liked the experience (except for one bit).

So for starters, the kit. The entire length of the ship is just 10 cm (1/350 scale) so the details are quite few. Each has a set of fixing markings which prevent attaching it the wrong way. The fit and the detailing is extraordinary. Plus, it's supposed to be more true to the original (at least the ANH 5ft model) than both large versions based on TFA. Plus, I dig the old antenna dish.

Assembjy job is quite straightforward and can easily be done in a few hours. The bottom half assembled.

With both halves assembled, they are ready for painting.

As for the paint job, I read the recommendations by DanielB in his thread. Therefore I chose the same Vallejo colors. The primer I used was the Vallejo black primer.
This was my first excursion into the world of acrylics and I was wondering how good it works out. As a matter of fact, quite effortlessly.

First I painted all the parts with the primer.

Actually, I quite liked how the Falcon looks in flat black. Somehow cool.

The thing I hate most: masking the canopy. That's some major pain in me buttocks, and I am still in search of an optimal solution.
What I did here is:
- Scanned the sticker sheet with the highest possible DPI (1200 I think).
- Printed the canopy / gun port glass sections in the original size (several copies, actually)
- Glued them onto sheets of wide Tamiya masking tape
- Cut the small pieces out with a scalpel.
- For the circular sections, I used pieces of a telescopic antenna to cut out clean circles of different radius.

Over the finished masks, another layer of primer was applied. Here the mask of the canopy roof and the round window are already painted. The small 4 windows were the last I made and were sprayed in a separate step.

The gun port masking.

The masking sprayed over with primer.

Well, the paint job.

I used the Vallejo acrylic paint Model Air White Grey. First pass was on the separate halves.

After the assembly of the ship I made another spraying pass in order to smooth over the possible differences in color. Plus, I used the black primer to spray soot over the exhaust. Imho it got a bit too strong.

For painting the details, I used a brush. Not too happy with how I got over the panel borders. Next time, I should mask them.

Colors used:
Red: 1/4 Vallejo Model Color Flat Red, 1/4 Vallejo Model Color Dark Red, 1/2 Vallejo Airbrush Thinner.
Grey: 1/2 Vallejo Model Color Sky Grey, 1/2 Vallejo Airbrush Thinner with some drops of Black Primer to make it darker.
As opposed to DanielB's thread I didn't paint yellow panels, as I found it too distracting.

This really is a fun kit, I'm currently working on this base for my friend to go with their little falcon
Now that's a cool idea! Too bad the Falcon doesn't have landing gears.

Very nice job!
And glad to find another Vallejo fan. ;)

Actually that was my first experience with both Vallejo and acrylics. Prior to that I only used enamel colors. But I really liked it (except the one time when the acrylics clogged the nozzle...).

Mix a few drops of these in with your paint. (10 parts paint 2 parts thinner) and you're nozzle will clog much less.

Thinner...

Flow Improver...

I actually used the thinner already, but not the flow improver. I'll check it out.

By the way, did you get to finish your Falcon?

Last weekend at Amsterdam Comic Con I happened to score one of these my very first Bandai Kitty . . . so I'm glad you posted your work in progress and your reference by DanielB. Personally I feel it should look a bit more weathered with shades of rust and yellowish ... perhaps some blaster marks as well, since as we all know from the beginning this ship made the Kessel run in 12 parsecs outrunning those imperial ships :)
