Question about molding

I watched the recent Tested video about how the Lich King was made for Blizzard. https://youtu.be/uyYeMQ3otZI

Frank mentions that they made the rough suit out of foam, the cast it, made a mold copy using clay and then put in the details, then recast it for the final mold.

My question is, has anyone tried this, and is it a viable option? The Lich King looks amazing, but I never thought it would make a good silicon positive.
