Washable Weathering

I want to temporarily dull down the white of a dress shirt for a costume (think dusty/faded), but I also want to restore the whiteness once I've finished with the costume. I'm after something that will stay in place until it's washed and not rub or flake off while I'm wearing it. Would a tea dye work or would it permanently fade/stain the fabric?

There is no guarantee any temporary measure wont completely wash out but like Zerosum said dirt is a friendly option you may have to add bleach when you wash it or a product like glow white (other brands are available)
