Hey guys,

I'm moving forward on my Luke/OWK shared stunt replica, and I need any high res reference pictures that you have. There are one or two details, that I need to nail down, so anything you have to share, please post here.

Please note, I'm not looking for replica pictures, or any photos of the hero or v2. Just the shared stunt prop listed here on POSW http://www.partsofsw.com/ob_luksab.htm

Thanks for all your help.

Dan

I've got some reference I'll send you when I get home from what I think is a Japanese exhibit that I haven't seen in wide circulation. Super excited for this project!

Yes! I've been looking forward to this one. :D I'm curious about the decision to use pewter. (Mostly because I don't know much about it.)

Pewter casting is pretty lowtech compared to alu casting. It can easily be done at home on the kitchen table.
Like many people do that are into pewter figures to display them on battlefield dioramas.

Much lower temperature than for alu, which also means easier and cheaper molds. No expensive Material.

I did it as a child (with bought soldier figure molds), too.

Is the plans for the saber the same? 3 piece hollow? Or will it be 1 cast.

Either way it doesn't bother me, I was just curious about the weight

I don't know much about pewter except for a few small statues my friend has and they are heavy

This is the saber that was cast from a wooden master, correct? Do we know what metal they cast it in?

We don't know. But, when I look at the current state of the saber, the contrasting tones in metal between the aluminum tape and the saber body makes me think that it was not aluminum. To my eye, the color looks a little bit darker than the aluminum tape.

I've got a couple different quotes. One company has offered to spin cast this saber as a one piece item. But this would leave the inside hollow reducing the considerable weight of a solid pewter part.

Just a reminder that this is a research thread and not an interest thread, so let's please keep the posts focused on that and keep the interest posts for when/if an interest thread is started in the Classifieds Forums. Thanks. :)

How hard can pewter be? I've had little statuettes made of pewter and I could dent them with my thumb nail. I would hope that the saber would be more dent resistant than that.

Well looking at the original prop, there appears to be dents all over the pommel. So, thats one of the things that leads me to think it was a fairly soft metal.

Just to be clear, Im not opposed to aluminum casting. And Im getting quotes for that too. Ive been to a couple foundries who have shown me some examples of there sand aluminum sand casting and plaster mold casting and Im trying to compare all these to get the right finish

I am fairly agreeing with you highly about the pewter casting because it does seem like it dented up very easily also you can see the seam line in it and most metals don't have seen Lions so they've most definitely probably did some kind of two piece mold and I most definitely interested in this run and cannot wait to see the finished results.

Not only does the prop look super dented but It's been repainted a few times. How well does pewter hold paint?

Most pewter soldiers i know are painted with colorfull clothing, like the armies in the US independence war, Napoleons soldiers, or all the other armies of that age.

If cleaned up carefully, using good colors, there should be no problem. Probably better than polished or very smooth machined alu.
