Bandai Ralph McQuarrie-ish concept X-wing

The new resistance X-wings are so similar to Mcquarries design that I just had to make one of these.

I took some artistic liberty with the wing markings simply because I always felt it needed something in the wings. (No offense to Ralph)
I decided to go with a 1970's design style motif to stay in line with the common design markings often used by Ralph and other concept artists (Syd Mead) during the 70's and to maintain the common "L" shape found on the other "X-wings.
These type of 70's style markings can also be seen on the Y-wing and Lukes land speeder.

Gave it a light weathering because I just wanted it to stay relatively clean.
Also did some minor surgery here and there.

awesome job on this kit, the stripes on the wings are so unique but it fits the look of the ship perfectly! very impressive build

Some of the minor mods-

Sanded down the sharp edges on the fuselage until it was nice and curvy.

Covered the greebly strip behind the astromech droid to streamline it a bit

Cut off 1/3 of BB-8s head to match thr little flat cap on the droid in the McQuarrie painting.

Added a lift under BB-8 so he would sit up higher.

Swapped the cannons on the left to the right and vice versa. When swapped out on this bandi kit the flash hiders lay horizontal instead of vertical like the McQuarrie art.

Added the vent panels on the engine intake using the little flat tabs that were part of the sprue.

Outstanding! I love it! I also really like the markings you came up with for the wings. I think I may want replicate that. ;)

Great build

The model looks great!

What was the reason for rotating the flash hiders?

They are positioned horizontally instead of vertically when switched.
Thats how the mcquarrie painting has them.

Which painting is that? When I search on Google for "McQuarrie X-Wing", I see some McQuarrie inspired models and images with them horizontal, but the actual McQuarrie painting behind the X-Wing in the trench with a bunch of laser bolts shows them vertically. There must be some McQuarrie image that shows them horizontally, but I can't find it.

Hmm. I think i may have seen it on one of the existing models and thought it was from the McQuarrie painting.
Either way I can easily swap them out.
I still like then in the horizontal position.

Dont know what the consensus is on that other McQuarrie painting (the one you posted)...it doesnt seem to be the same X-wing from the other painting.

Nevermind, i found it.

My mistake, it was actually a Joe Johnston sketch of Ralphs X Wing-

Yeah the horizontal flash hiders seem to be in Johnston's sketches, and aren't even visible in one of the paintings. But horizontal is an interesting variation, and seems more effective from the pilot's vantage point.
