Comic-style Dredd

Looks really fine - mine is 3D printed. Have not designed the entire eagle myself, got some (alot) of help, but might post the STL file in the future when we have sorted out what to do with it :)

Thanks my friend! I'll confirm when I get home. I know I used a piece of 5mm foam that was 12 x 20 inches i believe. I cut the top in a curve and angled the bottom. If memory serves, out is around 8 1/2 to 9 inches from top to bottom. But again, I'll confirm later. That's all for the eagle.

I forget the measurements for the left. Aside front using EVA foam for the bottom 2 sections and 5mm foam for the cross pieces, I'll have to check that too.

Actually, just print these out on regular paper. These are the homemade templates I used for the left armor. Then tape them together into this:

Looks like we're both working on a similar costume project. Good stuff! I've got the eagle and other shoulder done and just finishing putting some colour on the buckle. I wasn't sure what colour to paint so just went for a standard gold spray paint. Tempted to try a yellow colour but happy with the gold so far and it seems pretty consistent with what some others are doing too.

Well, as with most projects, this once again was relegated to the back shelf for a while. Time to pick it back up.

I'm thinking of a new idea for the eagle head, in order to break away from the Judge Minty look just a bit. I liked the way the talons came out, so over the holidays, I started working on a sculpt for the head. This is only in the early stages, but ion liking the comic feel. I'll update soon.

The head is not attached, nor is it in final position. I'm working on shaping it into a lower, more dropped position as if the Eagle is swooping in for an attack. Obviously, it needs cleaning up and will have facial features added. Let me know which head version you like better.

A little more head work. Slowly shaping iut down. The eyes probably need to shift forward a little, but it's for armour not a statue, so I'm not too worried.

Still working on this project. A little battle with serious illness has sidetracked me twice, but I'm back an recommitted! With the left shoulder model done, the eagle is still in flux. I'm likely going back to the original flat-head I carved, but time will tell.

In the meantime, I've moved on to the helmet. I started with a pep file of the Brian Bolland style bucket -- the same one that formed the basis of the Blind Squirrel build, and is linked to his construction project page. I had to modify it in a number of ways to fit my skull (which is only about 22.5 to 23 inches). The pep itself is very long, but skinny. I had to cut a spacer into the back, and trim up the sides a bit. Getting ready to head to the next stage. Pay no attention to the super-fast photoshop of a face shield. :)

Also, got a hold of a great 3D model of a MK1 Lawgiver. This baby is ready to be molded and cast!

Stay tuned.

Thank you my friend. I went a few rounds with oropharyngeal (throat) cancer. Thankfully, I beat it and I'm getting back to this slowly but surely. I added some shape holders to the bucket pep.

Now it really is ready to go to the next phase. I'm also starting to do some work on a belt buckle using foam. I will likely switch to sculpting clay, but the foam is giving me some good templates to work with. I want to head in the direction of something like this:

This is only a very rough beginning, but here are some of the initial foam cuts. I am going to reshape the shield and add pieces over it, rather than carving relief into it. But again, this is still early stage.

Did a little work this weekend on the knee and elbow pads. After that, I will be finishing the eagle and then getting everything to the shop to start making molds.

Awesome work, I’m a huge Dreddhead, have my own comic CalHab costume and a 2012 Judges costume, but haven’t completed a comic build yet. This is a great progression, following your excellent work!
