Wonder Woman= Amazons of all kinds

I did a quick check but couldn't see anything here.

I'm building Hippolyta's armour (golden) and figured it would be great to have an all purpose thread to share resources.

Daily updates to full images without comment:

As there are new updates daily from social media accounts now that performers have been allowed to share I have a pinterest board for the following:
https://nz.pinterest.com/michaeladebruce/amazons-hippolyta/
https://nz.pinterest.com/michaeladebruce/amazons/
https://nz.pinterest.com/michaeladebruce/amazons-antiope/
https://nz.pinterest.com/michaeladebruce/amazons-diana/
(please repin rather than repost as these all link to the original source- there has been a lot of reposting and we may lose context over time.)

Please just respect the rules so that the file folders can remain organised for future members.

The RPF has already shared this:
https://www.facebook.com/NerdsLikeUs/posts/1511283915560319

I'm downloading all images from that including Diana's as there are some lovely textures that can be used to boost information from smaller images of other amazons.

Will be adding as I am able to :)

But the blend of natural materials and modern armour materials was a lovely surprise as far as how well it all blended :)
There does seem to be some grouping of armour styles so I haven't yet put the named characters into the right order yet as I haven't got absolutely sure images for each :)

But please feel free to share images and links to discussions with the designer etc. I'll add to this post over time with those too :)

I'm going to use up stash leather and stash Pearlex pigments for mine and possibly switch some hand shaped extruded PVC for the cast pieces. This is because there are edge details on Hippolyta's torso piece that suggest tooling and while the leather I have is tanmned and not easy to tool it does respond to minor shaping that will be needed. ANd I do have enough russet to make the eagle :)

http://entertainment.inquirer.net/2...tual-athletes-fighters-as-powerful-amazonians

Woohoo! Nice behind the scenes photos clearly showing the kit that Warriors wear vs the army. Makes sense, the warriors are the ones who train, and so their gear reflects Diana's training gear.

Also it looks like the Queen's Guards have the solid greaves like the royal family and has the inverted V chevron pattern to their torso gear. And tassets.

There seem to be two torso types to the army, I'm not sure if they reflect different status or different branches (I was thinking projectile vs hand to hand) either way it looks like the darker inverted V chevron gear is worn with a "full" chest covering while the golden }{ patterned gear is worn with half chest covering with straps of darker reddish colour.

I worked on Xena and Herc and know there is often a mix and match approach to extras but I think these are essentially uniforms so the variation is likely to be limited and used in world to group different parts of the whole.
The thigh high leg coverings may be to denote cavalry?

https://www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/06/an-army-of-amazons-featured-in-wonder-woman-set-photos/
It does seem the half torso intended for archers.

http://imgur.com/gallery/6Sb10
The thigh high covers do look like they are for calvary for sure. The infantry doesn't need them?
But the mix of the two main styles seems to be across both.

And the Queen's Guards do have they're on thing going on. (also is that a deliberate Batman symbol on Hippolyta's gear?

My sincerest thanks to all the amazons who have shared their photos of their experiences on set. It is truly inspiring and very much appreciated The Amazons mean so much to so many, so thank you.

previous post separated the three types of armour worn by the bulk of the Amazon Army. This post is to try and describe the different elements of the skirts, as well as can be observed.

These are my my own observations, I look forward to being proved wrong by the Art book!

2017-06-11-221.jpg

This screengrab of the featurette shows that the three types of armour observed are indeed a deliberate choice. The Queen's Guard ensemble just obscured is yet another type and there are a few similarities in terms of layers and construction.

Skirts

The skirt straps are woven leather made in one piece with the lower layer of groin protection. This suggests the horizontal straps*are shaped to fit the curve of hips.*This also suggests the skirts close in the back or side. I have used arrows to indicate where to spot this feature in the following.

(@aliciavelabailey*@brookeence @jennypacey:)

aliciavelabailey1-copy.jpg
brookeence1-copy.jpg
jennypacey1-copy.jpg

(via @maylingng:)

maylingng1-copy.jpg
maylingng2-copy.jpg

The following photo snippets*show the leather straps are a vege tanned leather dyed and weathered. The ends flare slowly then taper to a jagged point. The original colour of the leather can be seen on the inner waist of the first photo. This also shows the hide is fairly thick and the woven sections to appear to be flattened (malleted while wet?)

The woven section is*4-5 rows deep below the line of the belt with between*1-2 *rows behind the belt. The vertical straps seem to number about 28. To get to this number there appear to be 4-5 each side front. Assuming a similar number at the back and assuming a similar number match at the back as appear to be missing from the front. The straps appear to be close to an inch across at the top widening to 2 1/2" at the bottom. This is a very rough estimation based on*average distance between knuckles on a thumb.

The surface is semi gloss suggesting standard finishing techniques with a sealer/oils.

The first image below*is from the background of a photo by @jadevlewis*the next two are from the side of a photo by*@yoga_ballroomgirl

jade1.jpg
ballroomgirl5.jpg
ballroomgirl4.jpg

The skirt and belts are stored on different kinds of coathangers and this offers a chance to determine where the join in the skirt section is.*The middle photo apparently shows a skirt draped over a coathanger so that the centre front is to our right while the centre back is to our left. To support this theory we need to look at the silvery tinted hip level belt.

The*hip level belt appears to be cast so that the plates are semi-rigid and the gaps between offer *more flex (this may affected somewhat due to being*mounted to the very dense woven skirts) The belt plaques appear to be about as dense and flexible as*leather of a similar weight.

The pattern of shapes appears to be symmetric and follow this order:

Inverted decorated inverted V (/\)*at centre front then a rhomoid (/_/) then a trapezoid (/_\), another rhomboid, an irregular pentagon that is longer than the rest of the plaques,*and finally a narrow rectangle shape that is used for lacing (three holes per side.) There is a gap that is able to be seen even in group shots. The following is from a behind the scenes featurette.

2017-06-11-233-copy1.jpg

This also shows a blurred section that follows the same line in the strapping skirts. I have not been able to find a higher resolution however the above clearly shows the straps are interrupted as they do not line up from one side to the other. I cannot make out the method of joining but any lacing holes appear to be filled with a thong or cord that matches tonally and completely obscures them.

There are V shaped belts on the left side of the skirts. These appear to be a*different leather*to the skirts and is a more yellow tinted brown. There are variations in this piece as some are worn alone while most have either a matching piece on the right or a second V shaped belt with snake scale/fish scale plate over the top (the direction is towards the pointed end of the belts.)

The*groin protection follows two distinct types. The first is a simple layer of matching leather following much the same shape as the lower layer with concentric rings of thing strips of leather woven through.*The pattern can be easily observed in the photos at the top of this post.

The second type is very complex and several layers thick. The first layer appears to be the piece of leather that is continuous with the strapping skirts. It appears to be split vertically through the centre. It is not possible to tell as of yet whether this split extends to the top edge.

The following photo attempts to show the additional layers through use of colours.

Via @yoga_ballroomgirl
yogaballroomgirlcopy1.jpg

The top two layers of Y (inverted) and W shapes are indicated in pink and purple- these appear to wrap around to the back in photos from the side but it is difficult to ascertain where these wrap to. There is another Y (inverted) shape as indicated in blue that also seems to wrap behind. There are two vertical strips to the outer edges indicated in green. The next layer is indicated in yellow and is of three gently flared sections. The final layer which I believe to be continuous with the strapping is obscured in this photo but can be easily seen in the photos of Mayling Ng in the previous sections.

Apologies for the pinboard. There is an Instagram Account that collated images from the performers so I went on an IG liking spree as they actually linked all the performers! Only then realised you can't view saved likes except via the app.. so here is a board!

https://nz.pinterest.com/michaeladebruce/amazons/
Amazing images from behind the scenes including images of the armour being worn in stages. 74 pins so far. And there are a few videos that pinterest couldn't save.

Also for Hippolyta; the dolls and figures are proving a bit help in working out what is going on in the back :)

I'll be adding the images to the first two posts so as to have them in an easy to use order.

'All kinds' is right! There's a multitude of body types represented in these Amazons, which is great to see. Also every one of them look like they could bench-press me without breaking a sweat.
Loving the fact that the vast majority of the armour looks functional. There's the obvious concession to the fact that visibly powerful femininity is part of the Amazons' aesthetic, and the bare arms/legs are entirely in keeping with the Grecco-Roman design

When I was at NYC Comic Con last year they had a huge Wonder Woman display with movie used costumes. They had shields, helmets and weapons from the Amazons and of course the main 3. I took lots of pictures, but they are a bit down on my Wonder Woman pintrest board, but it has some good detail shots of costumes and props they had on display.

Thank you :) I have had very spotty wifi over the last few days so sorry for a delay in replying! Just grabbing them all now for personal files. And now I've repinned all of them to three boards (repinnin so you get credit still- I aim to find the original source and share so full credit is given. Not only for respect but to make sure later research doesn't wind up in an endless loop of pins!)

I have been filling my pinterest board with updates and hash tag searches (so much stuff that should be tagged) and I think i now have a complete list of social media accounts of performers who are sharing. A few have been private for a while, some seem to have gone private after SM started following in big numbers and taking images and reposting them.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/AmazonCostumeResources/(it is closed but I've allowed other members add people and will organise a moderator in the US to help
My pinboard was getting out of hand and even getting links up in here was getting crazy! I'm still working on it :) Now that I have a proper folder sorting system :)

I really dislike editing photos by other people but I think some subtle vignettes to highlight specific people in group photos is not too creepy. I generally think how I'd feel about that happening to photos of myself ;)

Does anyone here know if there is a method other than sewing to join different pieces of armor? I want to make men out of leather but I don't want it to look stitch together. Can you use contact cement?

Hey there! I don't want to hijack, but do want to share info. I just posted my full Hippolyta build and released the pattern I used to make it out of leather. I posted the full tutorial here. Hope this comes in handy.

I also took tons of reference images at last year's NYCC. See here.

Pattern:

Finished costume:

I also sculpted/cast the shield and crown for her.

I made my Blood Dragon armour out of leather, everything silver is leather :) I used a 1.5mm russet tooled and wetformed to curves and then used a chrome tanned leather to support it. That layer was not stretchy and so I used seams to help stabilise the support. Then used a water based contact glue.
I glued with the skin sides out so the glue could weld right through. It worked really well excepts near edges and that was everything to do with me not thinking ahead and masking off the outer layer so I could glue to the every edge and not worry about transfer.
I used water based contact glue as I knew there is a similar product used for leather but that this would also be waterproof once cured.

There are also specialised stitches o hold edges together in leather that hide them entirely. These are for shoe weight leather.
https://b3r.org/historic-event/marshal2009/shoes_1.html
Note how the Flesh Edge nd Butt methods go through the surface and out the side.
Also how at the botoom of the images there is a stiffening layer sewn only through half the thickness.

All this really only works with a heavy leather.

I think, I think, the cuirasses of all amazons is leather sewn or molded, the chest plates are cast rubber urethane, the greaves for most are a rigid very smooth urethane. And I think the bracers are all metal.

But I'm only able to an analysis of a costume part per day and yesterday was for the skirts. Just going to pop that up in the first two threads.

Yep, It's in my pin board above :) I check tags and accounts every day but it takes time to get all new info in here and tease out the info that it collectively ties into :) I have some screen grabs of senators though the supposedly HD video does weird things on my comp. And there is a group photo behind the scenes too :)

So thanks for posting.

I do always recommend checking my pinboard.

Updated the armour identification page :)

http://www.arrayedindreams.com/2017/06/11/amazon-army-armour-three-types/

The slug is out of date but will cause errors if I change it :) Right now it's about identifying individual amazons so as to next be able to use the group photos to clearly explain the different elements :)

I think boots are the next one. Basically there are glam boots for the indoor sets and stunties for on outdoor shoots. Sort of. But definitely the boots need to be looked at.

Hello! Thank you so much for putting all this information together! I was wondering if you had found any sources that show Hippolyta's costume when young Diana asks her about the Godkiller. I've searched the internet high and low, and literally can only find screencaps that show the back and part of the front. If you or anyone else can find a photo of the costume full-length from the front, I'd be eternally grateful!
