Been following on Facebook also... this build is amazing. I also love that you’re extracting the skins and converting them. Will definitely be using them in my next build

Awesome, i'm glad people are finding them useful. I'll be slowing down on them over the next few weeks but if you want something specific be sure to let me know

When I said he was finished he kinda wasn't. He was finished enough but he had a few missing things like his shield. So it was time to add it on.
For those unfamiliar with Reinhardt his shield is on his left forearm and is a lion emblem.

It looks like this then when he activates it four telescopic arms pop out from behind the shield and extend into a giant forcefield so he can shield his teammates.

As real forcefields are yet to exist i'm creating that effect with light. The arms though will pop out from behind the shield..hopefully.
So I thought about a few ways to have the arms pop out and sketched this one.

I ordered some drawer slides. Good old eva foam for the shield.
Threw the mechanism into Fusion and mocked it up.

in this version there is a bit of interferance but it could be sorted I was more worried about how 3d printed arms would go and decided to think of an alternative and came up with this one.

Then someone suggested just one pinion instead of 4.

    So back to Fusion.
I was also contemplating a 3d printed bearing so the entire shield could turn 90 degrees on his arm. When it's not used it sits upright but when it's used it turns 90 degrees and is upright when his arm is held horizontal. I figured just getting it to do the arms would be enough complication for now.

I got a dozen 12v blue strips normally used for cars... one is bright 12 should be very bright, each arm will 2 and then four will be on the back of the shield reflecting back onto me. They will only trigger when the arms are fully opened, i'm putting a glass reed switch onto one arm and a rare earth magnet on the back of the shield this will complete the circuit and the whole thing will light up.

So, I had a nice blue semi transparent PETG filament that had some great flex to it and is much stronger than PLA. I used a skateboard bearing for the pinion, there's 2 double helical pinions with a gap for the 2 levels.
I ran out of the blue and had to switch to some white PLA but the parts that needed to be super tough got done.

A little bit of foamwork for the lions face on the front, I even tried some foam clay, it's interesting to work with but i think I should have turned the heater off (It's winter here) it seemed to dry quite quickly. Anyway, i'm not happy with my sculpting but I can bo back in with my dremel.

Here's the left forearm, the whole thing will attach where the Overwatch logo is.

And this is where the mechanism is today.

It will either be powered with 360 mechanical servo or the rip cord off a chainsaw... i've ordered both
