Rey costume from The Last Jedi (possible spoilers)

I was looking for fabric for the obi. Does anyone know if it is cotton or linen? It gathers up like gauze, but I've seen mention of linen in some of the costumes for sale on Etsy. I found a few fabrics on Fabrics.com that look close to the right color.

Cotton Gauze

Suiting Linen (Probably too stiff)
https://www.fabric.com/buy/0532842/100-european-linen-suiting-charcoal

Linen/Cotton Blend
https://www.fabric.com/buy/0443335/kaufman-essex-linen-blend-graphite

The high-res Petco poster shows a nubby texture to the obi, so I'm leaning toward linen. Also the poster is very color edited to appear more warm. The difference between my mood fabric and the poster is quite a bit.

I'll edit this post as I go, so all the information can be in one place.
great info for everyone, thx for posting it.

My holster pattern and info is at:
https://emeraldb.com/2016/04/23/star-wars-rey-resistance-costume-part-1-blaster-holster/
Note: this was done early and I think the holster has now been shown to actually have stitching on the face of it that should be added.

Blaster assembly and finishing info:

Wrist cuff made using the Division / Mithril pattern:
https://emeraldb.com/2016/12/18/star-wars-rey-costume-part-8-reys-wrist-cuff-bracer/

...and belt making info, but this is from the other costumes, so it would need to be modified:

Redwillow, your blog is so great. I've studied it many times. :) I printed out the holster pattern this weekend to start on mine, but I'm glad I read your post, because I see it's best to get the blastesr first so you can fit the holster to it.

WARNING – RANT ahead:

It's really annoying to me that they changed her belt. :behave It's not believable to me that she would make another one while on the island doing her training. We know she didn't make it before she left the Rebel base, and we know she did not have it when she arrived on Ach-to. Would she really have made a new one on the island? Like Luke has a leather-working workshop? Well, maybe. But then where did she get the boots. It's hard to believe she made them herself. Did she take the uppers off the old ones and put new uppers on the bottoms? Are the Caretakers makers? Did they make her new outfit, boots, belt? Is there an outfitters outpost on the island? Lol. It's kind of unbelievable which takes me out of the story. Don't get me wrong, I love having a new costume to work on, and the tunic is awesome, but really. Maybe the costume designers needed something to do. But did they really think we wouldn't notice?

Hello everyone :)

I am new to this forum, but I am reading what you wrote for a long time. Your work is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing all the information, it is so great how you support each other in every kind of way ^^.
I want to create my own costume for Rey. I ordered some fabric for the tunic and I have to die it (like many other people too I think ;) but we can do it!) and I wanted to know if anyone has got some of the brown fabric left and could send it to me (I can pay via paypal)? I want to die my fabric as screen accurate as can be. It would be a great help ^^.

Looking forward to have a great time with you :D.

Part of me wonders if they tried flipping the original belt but then realized it needed adjustments to the point where they made a new one. When I first saw it, before I really looked, I just thought to myself "oh, she turned her belt upside down".

Ditto to Redwillow, your blog rocks!

Now for those pants...I keep looking at them. I got a pair of Old Navy jeans others have modified. The way the seam at the base of her knee looks makes me think that the knees are reinforced as well as articulated (you can see a thicker line below the outer seam). It would make sense in a way, because if you had a reinforced knee you would need that side seam/pin tuck to make it match up to the full knee and make it flex right. The jeans at Old navy are on sale right now in the store for like $8 so I think I'm going to get another pair and play around with layers.

My guess (totally speculation on my part) on the belt is that the strap on the old one was problematic where things like her holster/blaster hung on it because it was the thinnest part of the belt, and it was difficult to put on and take off with those D-rings. And the costume designers needed something to do. But did they really think we wouldn't notice? https://www.therpf.com/images/styles/smilies/lol.gif

those are great pics too, you may want to post them in the Resistance costume thread. There was some discussion about that cloak over there.

Here's a shot of the Target display of the Obi sash. The fabric is very textured, so if it is a linen, is it raw linen? Could it be crinkle gauze? Picture is not accurate for color.

I have handled linen before, and that does not look very similar in that shot. Not sure what it is, but I strongly suspect that it isn't linen.

So I originally purchased some cheesecloth for my wrap but looking at these photos and the nubby texture I think my fabric would be better suited for the obi. It's also very thin so even if I did layer it to be less see through it wouldn't add bulk to my waist.

Got my white tabard fabric in today.
Just waiting for the final results everyone comes up with for dying it.
Oh, and for my niece to return from Spain.
Itll probably help to have her here.

Can anyone explain alittle more, the belt differences for me.
Not to sure I'm seeing what's different.
Robert

In some ways that fabric looks like the same fabric a lot of us used for our scavenger Rey head wrap shirts. The woven fabric from Dharma. The weave of the dharma stuff changes a lot after washing and looks similar to these pics. I saw posted on another place reference to this fabric on Etsy as an option for the obi. It looks like one of the pictures, but not these others that show a more nubby texture. But I still like it as an option.

I have some of the Dharma fabric left over. I might try dyeing it with some charcoal grey or something just to see how it looks in comparison.

Here's another two shots of the obi region. That's the best I can get for now. View attachment 758509View attachment 758510

Thanks for sharing all this information everyone !

If anyone of you want to grab an accurate lightsaber to complete your costume, there is this offer on Korbanth website : http://www.korbanth.com/sabers/graflex-2.0-saber-kit-low-stock/

3.jpg

He's selling the graflex 2.0 saber hilt (with ANH & ESB kit, and adaptable for TFA too) for 160$. I've just ordered it, as the price is very low for what it is. I'll try to post pics when I'll get it. I asked him if he have blades, and he kindly send me one on my package (+30$ cost), as I needed to buy it from US too and to be shipped to Europe (which was really expensive :cry).

This offer is only for hilt. You'll need to buy a blade, light and sound(optional) separetely.

I've been following this thread, but I haven't posted on it but I would just like to thank everyone for the feedback on this costume. I'm trying to get it done for nerdbotcon at the end of the month, and I will probably be using the cheesecloth (i did it for my the force awakens rey) and it worked pretty good for me.

For the wraps, i was going to use the charcoal grey dye; i'm not particularly trying to make this 100% accurate and legion approve able but I think that the color is the closest I could find to dye at Joanns lol. I was also trying to find similar fabric to the mood one but $24 a yard is a bit pricy, so i've been trying to find something similar enough to it :x I'd love to get the boots from po-zu but again those are pretty expensive XD but they are so cool...I found some at the good will today with like laces on the back and just with a bit of altering i'll fix them.

im looking forward to see how everyone comes together to figure out how her costume is like! I'll try to post progress pics too of my own costume.

How are everyone's builds going? I've just started mine, a bit last minute since I'm trying to get it done in time for a convention at the end of the month. I'm putting together all the references and resources I can find. Here's what I have so far, much of which is from you guys in this post (thank you!!) and a few of which are things I've found. I'll edit this post as I go, so all the information can be in one place.

I've been reading elsewhere that the confirmed fabric for the wrap dress/tabards used in the film is a wool gauze. This on Dharma looks good, but phew it's pricey.

I received my swatch yesterday (the “brown” one for reys tunic) and it is wonderful. Thanks for your help! :D now I can dye my natural fabric into a color as screen accurate as possible.
I watched the swatch a little closer and I saw this: the fabric they used is definitely green and then they dyed it brown afterwards. Or maybe I am wrong? What do you guys think?
For reference there is a little bit of my fabric so you can see they did not just died the natural colored fabric into brown fabric. It was green first.

Hika, that's really interesting. It does look like that could be the case. Sometimes if you were to get a spot of bleach on fabric it could do weird discolorations like this, but it does kind of look like it could be in the weave.
