Spartan Batman

Hey, everyone.

A while back i saw the kai variant line of toys and the Spartan batman one really stood out to me.

So I decided it would be my first full costume build.

I've done a few things in the past with pepakura, a little sculpting with monster clay, but no real foam or fabric work. So this will definitely be a learning experience for me.

Hopefully I can get it done by the time dragoncon rolls around.

I've created the shield so far.

I have also sculpted and cast the helmet.

Sadly I messed up here, and made the helmet too small for my head. So, currently I'm in the process of resculpting the helmet.

I just realized i haven't updated in a little bit.

So here's some photos of my progress.

there's going to be a kind of piping or trim going around all the musculature. I don't have that completely worked out yet.

I have a couple ideas, but I want to test them out before I add them.

It fits pretty well, this is actually glued together, and I'm able to slip it over my head to get it on and off.

So as this is my first full out costume, i've been learning lots. there's some really awesome makers and cosplayers on twitch that have been giving me some amazing advice on new mediums such as leather working, worbla, and improving my painting.

so the toy model has a bat symbol that protrudes quite a bit. I played around with it a bit and ended up deciding on a more subtle bat symbol.

I felt this color was a little too bright of a dirty silver/steel look. It turned out to be true when I took it outside to look at it.

I always like to take it into different lighting situations to try and see how the paint looks.

So I went through and added some water based black paint.

And this was the result. It became a really interesting color, that kind of looks like an antique brass.

Currently waiting on some leather so I can work on the leather skirt next.

So it's looking like my costume won't be an exact replica of the toy, Ive been making a few changes based on personal taste instead of accuracy.

So I was able to get everything done in time for dragon con!! Definitely learned a lot walking around the con.

Overall the costume held together well over 7 hrs of walking in the crowds of the con. I did have an issue with my leather skirt falling off. Next time if i do something similar a longer strip of velcro for weight changes, and a button or clip as a back up.

the helmet did limit visibility from the nose down and muffled hearing a bit.

I need contacts. however once i did a few laps around the marriott I did feel a lot more comfortable.

I need to add pockets. I basically wandered the marriott floor with just my room key and my glasses in my sword sheath.

This costume was a lot of firsts for me. I did some sewing.

And some leather work.

but I think it came together well.

So the biggest struggle for me was the helmet. I went through 5 different versions before i liked one enough to mold and cast.

But I did like the look of the final version of the helmet.
