Shoretrooper...cardboard scratch build.

getting there slowly! will be remaking the blast shield, looks a little tall, but its taking shape...even the wife was impressed!

so...where are we at?
all of the upper body armor is built & in the process of being sanded & filled & sanded & filled & well you get the picture.
received_1880278608878733.jpeg received_1880278588878735.jpeg...I got webbing cheap on the interweb, ready to make the belt, a 2inch & 1inch & have decided to try glueing them together with another strip of webbing, I've gone with a heavy duty, all purpose glue...I just don't have the time to sew them together by hand. also...whilst picking up more wood filler, I found some real cheap work gloves for a couple of quid...bargain! they were black & grey, so I just painted out the grey & they look & feel fine & dandy.
received_1880278752212052.jpeg...the belt boxes are together, will add shaped edges when the filler goes on & the sanding resumes.
next is the ab plates, the basic shapes are done, so started work on some of the details, beginning to look the part now.

ok...next part of the mission is to complete all sanding, get a few coats of primer on & think about adding some strapping, need to give this thing a test fit, just to see if it all looks in proportion & if anything needs attention/to be changed.
lastly...a little thank you to the wife, for putting up with my nerdy excitement when talking all things 'shoretrooper' & filling the kitchen with all kinds of crap! haha!

Yes, thanks to our spouses are definitely in order when we've got a build going on.

Are you really just using paint primer for your finishing surface? Are you using spray or liquid out of a can? I remember building cardboard stormtrooper armor years ago and it ate through spray paint like a sucking saarlac.

hey Kievan,.... I have a 3 step approach to my cardboard builds, firstly the cardboard...usually double layer it, a hell of a lot of hot glue for extra strength & then wood/all purpose filler (although I've only just discovered this product thanks to help & advice from the great folks here)...then primer like any other build, oh & plenty of sanding!

quick update!
got a few parts finished & ready for their first coat of primer, wow this really shows up the imperfections!... more filling, more sanding!...but I'm liking the look of it, things are moving forward...yes!

a month left to go...I may actually get this project finished!:lol

getting the final bits done on the bucket, its almost ready for its shoretrooper colours. never in my entire life have i been so excited at the prospect of spraying something beige!!
received_1884314801808447.jpeg received_1884314818475112.jpeg received_1884812815091979.jpeg received_1884812861758641.jpeg...they say that the "devil is in the detail!" I'm happy with the end result of this piece, just enough detail to look the part i think.
so...i said that a test fit was on the cards, the parts are all in different stages at this point, so forgive the roughness of certain pieces, still plenty of sanding to do.
received_1883867355186525.jpeg received_1883867325186528.jpeg...still got to add strapping to the abs section, so its sitting a little low, but feels ok to wear...a little bulky, but that's the nature of the beast for the medium that I'm working with. your thoughts would be much appreciated please ladies & gents. thanks for looking in, you lovely people, cheers!

evening to all,
2 weeks left, so plenty of late nites ahead, luckily i have a weeks holiday...HAZZAAR! before i go any further... how excited is everyone for Battlefront 2!? hope you all caught the live feed of the battle of Theed:eek...looks amazing...November is so far away right now! AAARRRGGGHHH!

so, back to the build. most of the parts are done & are awaiting the final colours, but as I'm on a budget, the range of cheap spray paints available is proving to be a pain in the butt to get a decent match for the Sahara Beige, so i have a scouting mission ahead of me this week.

i decided that if i had time I'd have as crack at making a blaster rifle, as a shoretrooper just wouldn't look very cool without his kick ass E-22! so...this was added to the long list of things to get done, here is the progress so far, its just the basic shapes at the moment, the extra parts & details are being worked on as i speak.
received_1888493244723936.jpeg received_1888493211390606.jpeg received_1888493198057274.jpeg received_1888268474746413.jpeg received_1888268398079754.jpeg...i use really think cardboard for most of the bulk parts, a few stacked together achieves the required thickness pretty quickly & then I'm straight in there with the wood filler(I've ditched the paper mache section on the rest of the build as I've found that in places its actually starting to lift! so straight onto the cardboard eliminates this, again...its a learning curve)...the wood filler is great, it hides a multitude of sins & if you mess up, you can chop it out & fill again... nice!
received_1893038297602764.jpeg...let me know your thoughts, cheers for looking

cheers pandabarnes, everything i build is usually cardboard based, it works for me!:D

well, the deadline came & went for Sci Fi by the sea & I'm really gutted to say that...i didn't get it finished in time, so terribly disappointed! will have to ease my pain with copious cups of tea & a truck load of strawberry laces.

the leg pieces were a real pain in the ass! these were the things that put me behind, but...i have the basic shapes down & now have an entire year to finish everything for next years big event.
received_1900389090201018.jpeg...sooo looking forward to making all of the straps for these things... NOT!:facepalm
ok...I've decided to put up a few pics of the upper armor as it stands, the chest, arm & ab plate still need the blue markings, and i realized that i have the bicep & shoulder bells on the wrong sides(this is due to lack of sleep, trying to meet the deadline...sigh!)the blaster is half finished... but I'm really happy with how its turned out, its got a nice weight to it also, thanks to the couplers being big chunks of card & filler, its a nice thing to hold lol.
so let me know what you think, its my first armor build & I've gained a lot of knowledge on how to improve things in the future. thanks to everyone for all of the great comments & help along the way, cheers:cheers

Absolutely brilliant :) love budget builds when they come out like this. Just shows you it doesn't matter what you make your stuff from at all.
It's all about the work you put in.
Craft your fandom. Yes.

thanks wedge, your comments & help are much appreciated:thumbsup
& thank you Mr. Spacebob sir, always such positive words from such an awesome builder, its really great to have you onboard, it gives this mediocre crafter the enthusiasm to build again, cheers:cheers
