I think the Petrol (g6280) looks really good. I'm worried about availability. Would really like to be able to either pick it up local or get it for a decent price. I see it goes for $32+ on amazon.

    $32!? Absolutely insane.

$7.75 on Blick Art Materials. It's where I get all my Montana paints. My last order was two cans of paint and it was just a bit over $5 in shipping. I'm in Florida as well for reference.

It's a really great paint. It's dries quickly and hard. Pretty impressed with it. I went with the "military green" color.

As I mentioned before, I am trying to use a 12 mm jump ring for the lens. At first I thought it was too big because it did not fit in the hole but then I noticed in image the ring is set behind the shield.

So here is what a 12mm jump ring looks like set behind the shield (with duct tape). Not a perfect look but It might help others with sizes.

Nothing yet. That's just duct tape in the image. I am probably going to use either a scrap piece of scrap plastic with flat black paint or black craft foam.

You could also take a piece of soda bottle plastic and spray paint the back side black so the painted side touches the fabric and the unpainted side has the ring on it. That way the plastic isn't super thick but it gets the job done.

I have been thinking of trying to drill out the side cylinder and install a light. I want to simply try to slide in a working mini light with a rear switch. Something like this:

    http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ovIAAO...sn/s-l1600.jpg

It is Dimensions: 3.86 x 0.71" which would make it a close fit. It also means I have to drill straight and clean without a drill press.

I started building my own flash light but to keep it simple I'm using a 5mm led and led holder. Wired to 3 small button (watch) batteries.
May give you a little more room to work with.

Hey! I just noticed that this soldier is wearing two difference helmets.... One for the VD, and one for the film... Look at the insignia on the side:

Well, the chinstrap clips are clearly the post-Korean era ones you see on 'Nam era helmet shells, designed to you could swap out chinstraps without a heavy sewing machine. The straps have been modified quite a bit, though.

Been told the originals were cast from poly plastiflex which would explain deformaties and squashing in pictures.

I was thinking they were probably vacuuformed, because of the cost effectiveness and the heat can deform them causing the deformity and squashed bodies. It very well makes sense they would be poly plastic though. Good catch!

The last thing i have left is the helmet lamp (not really sure if that is what the purpose is supposed to be). I have been waiting for a small penlight to arrive i the mail (bought a cheap one but it's on a slow boat from China... it think literally). However since I lack a lot of larger size drill bits and a drill press. I'm not really sure how I am going to pull it off. Iv'e also considered a 3D printing solution. However, i am going with a 3rd option. I bought one of these:

I got one coming via Amazon Prime so I should have it Tuesday. I think I will have an easier time fitting the lamp portion of the lamp body with the small hole I have already drilled. I also think I can conceal the flashlight handle inside the helmet without too much of an issue.

Thank you. I really liked that Petrol color. The natural luster of the paint was too pretty so I had tried clear matte sealer but it did not help. However it took some various colors of washes with stages of sanding in between. But after a bit, I got it to where I wanted it.

Super glad the Petrol worked out for you. It looks great!

Deep Sea (g5160) looks very similar to your end result, so that could be a possibility as well if anyone else is painting theirs. I'll spray some side by side here and post a photo.

No problem. I agree with you, that's why I suggested Petrol, but for those a little less inexperienced they could use Deep Sea and do a black wash and be done. Petrol takes a little more fudging with washes.

    Yours turned out awesome though!

A few good screen caps. Canister did an awesome job modeling with the little reference he had. It looks like the holes need to be drilled a little bigger, and the back piece needs to protrude a little more but those are pretty easy fixes I think! In the last picture.. you can see a few spots where a little paint has chipped off.. I've circled the main one, and you can see the base color. Is it blue or is it green? Is the dress white or gold??

I'll let you guys figure it out...
