"Tie Killer" Y-Wing Based on Dave G Open Source

This build is amazing! Besides being incredibly detailed and well constructed it provides inspiration and reference material for our own (albeit tiny Bandai) versions of this ship.

Interesting that you "went with the greens" that was a huge decision for me when I commissioned my Y-Wing paint... I decided not to...
I also had the rust spots on the top-rear-inboard nose area removed after painting as I now believe the original ANH filming miniature was repainted (possibly for ROTJ?) with the green areas and extra rust weathering then never used before going into a private collection.
In the end my Y-Wing was painted to match the two-page image of Gold Leader in 'Sculpting a Galaxy'...
Just wanted to share my Y-Wing thoughts, in no way am I criticising your awesome replica... and it is truly awesome...
I think you've seen my Y-Wing but here it is again for comparison

Hi Ollois,

I really love all the paint work on all your models in your collection! Your Y looks like a Master Replicas?

Yes, it was also a huge decision for me too. I once refused to believe that the ANH filming model had been modified to it's current state before filming of ANH. I can't remember which thread it was discussed, but there are screen grabs from ANH to suggest otherwise. Here is a before and after side by side. You can definitely see where more streaks and rust have been added.

Now here are a couple of screen grabs from ANH. You can see the hideous streak on the nose and barely make out the rust spots that have been added.

Even with this evidence I refused to add that giant streak on the nose on mine, It detracts from the overall look of the ship IMO. As far as the greens I went with a muted green tone that wasn't so electric green as seen here.

One thing was obvious with this model as I studied it. It was painted really heavy. For the first time on all the models I've done, I tried to imitate this on my model. I usually paint with more muted tones to match what the eye sees on screen. If I had a guess, the original paint job which we all love, including myself was brought into pre-production. After some test shots were done, I'm willing to bet that someone determined that it did not show up on screen to be beat up or damaged enough and the additional weathering was added before filming. Of course this is where we get into trouble on this forum for presuming anything. Cue the experts!

I would use .020" styrene, as that is the official measurement given for the styrene tiny plates that cover the original Star Wars (ANH, Ep IV) Imperial Star Destroyer, according to Joe Johnston's The Star Wars Sketchbook, 1977, p. 5: "It is covered in tiny plates, many no larger than 1/16" square and .020" in thickness."

Does anyone have a suggestion or preference for the styrene thickness for all the little square and triangle addons that are all over the cockpit? My initial thought is .10mm.

TIE Killer greeblie update:
Here is where I'm at with identifications. Not sure if #2 was even identified on the EFX Gold Leader. Any help on these would be greatly appreciated. A big thank you to TonyR from 308 bits designing the mystery pieces in blue for me! Happy Holidays!

Part #1 is the (modified) CB radio piece from the AMT 1/25 K-123 Cabover (Kenworth).

Thanks! It looks so obvious after you look at it. Hammer had filled me in on that part. I need to go back and update the ID's at the beginning.

Great looking Y. I love that you pick and choose what details and how to implement to get the ship right without being slavish to the source. It looks really good to me. I got into the Dave G Y so I could build a Y that was my own. I have Red 5 a TIE and X-1. A Y was an opportunity to get creative both greebly and paint wise, its fun go figure. Again impressive Y.

"Hammer filled you in on that part?" Did he also tell you what #2 was? I've been searching in vain for three years for that one. If you know, please do tell.

No, we've been searching for that one for a while also. I feel like it's a cut piece from something bigger.

Hey Mike, sorry I forgot to mention that the CB turned out to be incorrect the "mike" part is too small, I've checked other kits but haven't came up with the right one yet (if its even a CB part, sure looks like one though).
