NCR Veteran Ranger

Hello everyone,

it's been quite a while since I've logged into the RPF an finally I found the courage to start a Thread for my new project!

As you can see in the title, I will be doing (or at least trying) a Veteran NCR Ranger

Nv-rifle-dude_zpsabpneoms.jpg

I've already done a Episode VI Stormtrooper an TIE Pilot, but this is my first time building a costume from scratch an working with Pepakura (I might need a LOT of help with that) so please be patient with me :)

I also took a lot of inspiration from Kommissar's Ranger :)

Allright, let's go on with the project.

I already had some fun with the mask.

It's nearly shaped to fit into the inner Liner of a M1 US helmet, but unfortunately I used normal copy paper to form the mask...
Is there any way I am able to use it anyway? Maybe supporting it with fiberglass etc.?

Second, the coat

I got this one pretty cheap...for obvious reason, but it works good for the overall worn look.

I also got some used German military boots that will work fine, too.

As it is also my first time working with EVA foam, I did some scaled testing for the Chest Armor.
The results are not too bad, considering the efford.

Here you can see my sweet little model.
Loveley this hotglue sewn coat, isn't it? :)

Last but not least, the gun.
I am using a peacemaker replica gun, just beacause I like the look of it....aaand I got it for my birthday.

That's all for now.
I hope, you enjoyed my perparations an, maybe, can help me with my Pep-issues.

Move along

I've got the beginnings of my Ranger right now (Armor + laser rifle). What was the brand or color of that duster? I was having a ton of trouble finding one.

Great job so far!

I've got a Mountain Mac, Size L.
No Idea how good or bad it is, just found it on eBay and gave it a shot.
If you want a new one, you could search for "oilskin" on eBay.

I've used layered strips of newspaper soaked in slightly watered down wood glue to make pepakura models stronger. Not quite as rigid results as fiberglass, but it works. More layers means stronger result, naturally. Doing this on the inside of the model preserves the external details.

I used Pep files as a start to my mask, then transferred them to steel. Still have to dry brush and age the mask but its coming along. Also I used "Duck canvas" to make my duster. bought a bunch off Amazon and still have enough to make a second one haha.

That looks really cool good work!

I've been reading a lot about fiberglass and Resin and I think, I'll go that way, just have to order all the stuff.

Glueing together the Canister

I was thinking about how to assemble Mask and helmet. As the mask is right now, there is no way I can make these as one piece.

So here are my ideas

1)

Separating the mask into a face-piece and the "ear-parts", glue on the "ear-parts" and later slide on the mask, securing it with some hooks.

2)

Separating the nose-piece and chin-piece. Then glueing the rest of the mask to the helmet.
After putting on the helmet, I should be able to slide the nose-chin-part on the mask using some neodym magnets.

Anyway, I hope to make some more progress this weekend, so stay tuned :)

Any progress on the build? I just recently finished mine if you would like any pointers, because I learned a few things that I would have done differently in my build.

Umm... hello there, coming back from the dead, I guess.

Time for updates. I made some progress with the armor, and got some softparts.

I let myself inspire by EvilTed's video tutorial and Kommisars's build.

First taking some measurements.

Then scetching the design on paper.

Tracing everything on EVA foam, first the whole harness, then the individual armor parts.

Now to the real fun - heat forming

The finished chest plate

And with some battle damage :)

And this is my progress so far.

To do:
- Armor strapping
- priming with spray foil
- spray painting and weathering

I am currently looking for a holster and getting in touch with polyester resin.

Edit: Does anyone know which colors should be used?

Here we go again!

This time: Strapping, cleaning and priming

I started by sketching out a rough design for my strapping system

Then, using some snaps and fabric webbing, transferring it on the armor.

It is actually pretty comfortable to wear and fairly easy to put on and off.

To prepare the armor for priming, I wanted to deepen the scratches and bullet marks a bit more.

Done.

Next up, priming.
I used black spray foil ("plasti dip"), spaying on about 5 layers.

The final product looks good to me.

I am currently looking for a proper paint and some stencils, so there's more work to do!

Good afternoon,

time for some more updates (again).

Last time I finished priming the armor whith spray foil, now all completely dry.

Some scrap foam worked really well as handguards and arm armor.

This time I wanted to use another technique of making the foam ready for painting (and I was out of spray foil).
So I worked the surface with a heatgun until the surface cracked open - worked pretty good afterwards.

Since I wanted the space between the plates to remain black, I covered it with painters tape.

These are the stencils for step 2.

Painting in progress.

Step 3 - the armor is much too shiny (apart from the sprays, I kinda messed them up, but like it anyway), sooo blackwashing!

The arm armor and handguards need to be secured, but we go you covered.

And this is the (almost) finished costume:

*changing subject*
Accessoires

What is a proper ranger without propaganda (no pun intended)?

Got that going for me, which is nice :)

Last remaining work to do:
- giving the whole armor set a coat of clear coat
- proper dressing and some more acessoires

I won't be making the helmet and mask straight afterwards, but take a little break.
Of course it will be done (...my lord).

That's all folks!
Have a great time!

Hey could you post a link for where you got the Pep files? I was starting to make a ranger cosplay but I needed some files for the mask and the ones I've found so far are not really that good

Hey, great to see you around :)

I got mine out of Kommissar's build thread, the link should still be active.
Sadly, I don't know the original creator of this file.

Ah, thanks I'll go check it out. I was planning on doing a group cosplay with some friends of mine with some of us going as the NCR and the other half going as Caesars Legion

Greetings everyone!

It has been over a year since I posted an update here in this thread.

Private life struck me one again and I had to take a break from building.

But here I am again with a (nearly) finished NCR Veteran costume.

I did not like how the first mask turned out, so back to the cutting and glueing...

Then picking up old props and finally fixing them.

O2 Canister in the back

New Handguards and Arm plates.

Belts on the chest armor.

When it slowly started to get warmer, I could start putting epoxy and fiberglass to the pepakura parts.

I put on about 3 layers of fiberglass until it was sturdy enough.

I then primed it with Plastidip.

So how to fix the mask to the helmet?
Magnets!

Here's the result with a new Filter and the hose attachment.

On to painting!

The result with glued in magnets and lights.

After that?
Weathering!

This is the final result.

I still need to find proper lenses and
make some adjustments to the strappings,
but all in all I am really happy with the result!
