It's been a couple years since I built a new costume for myself. I finally forced some time for a project for myself this year to match the Sparrow I built last year from the video game Destiny. I'd been planning on doing my Titan from the game wearing all Iron Banner gear since last winter, it coincided nicely with the latest expansion that they just announced. Overall it took just under a month to build from start to finish.
Everything was done with EVA foam and craft foam and I started from the top down.
Helm of Saint-14:
Basic EVA foam building here using a template from Atom Bomb Studios. Nothing really fancy about it so far.
The rooster comb was done with a broom. I cut off the bottom part with all the bristles and used a heat gun to bend the plastic to fit the curvature.
Got a silver base coat and it's time to relax!
Iron Companion Gear:
Using the Destiny STL Generator I made some custom foam templates for each of the armor pieces.
Trying on the under chest plate to make sure it fits right.
The decorative chest plate was a pretty easy build. The details are cut from 2mm and 4mm craft foam and glued in place.
Got the whole chest plate assembled and strapped together!
The gauntlets include the pauldrons. Once again, pretty basic shapes for the templates, the real work was cutting out all the trees!
I have a duct tape dummy that I was using to hold the armor pieces together and check the fit and form.
Luckily, my mother did a lot of sewing when I was growing up so I've learned my way around a sewing machine. I think I did a decent job of embroidering the designs only the mark.
Fits pretty well!
I started with the painting and weathering. The base coat is silver with white dusted over it. The accent was metallic bronze and everything was weathered down with acrylic washes and silver paint.
The leg plates slip on over my feet and are held in place with a couple fabric snaps. Gauntlets slip on over my hands and are just held in place by pressure. The boot armor and hand plates are held on with simple elastic bands so that they aren't permanently attached to the gloves or boots. I do have plans to add a laptop fan inside the helmet to try and cool it down. The same goes for the backpack, a 75mm fan will be installed in the back. Hopefully this will help me keep cool while wearing the armor in the heat this fall.
