Bandai 1/72 PG Millennium Falcon (also the Revell Germany rebox)

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

Well we know that John Simmons had no problems with the Archive X paints on the Bandai plastic....as long as you use a good primer,...but now Guy Cowan has started his PG Falcon using his paints.....I just love his technique....so like the ILM guys....look at that blast mark,....drool

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

I used oils as one of my mediums on my falcon with no ill effects. I should say that I used automotive primer under AS-20. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180113/14b0bc00345dfea21906d92ecbc5fda2.jpg

I use black automotive primer & then i mixed dupli- color automotive paint for the base coat on my falcons... I will use the oil paints for weathering on the bandai falcons. Thanks for help!

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

I use Hycote car primer,....then I can use oils on top

Another pic of Guy Cowan's PG Falcon......Beautiful weathering

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

I discovered something while working on the Falcon this weekend that might add something to the group's trivia knowledge of the original studio model. While looking at my reference photos of the engine area, I noticed for the first time this strange gouge carved out of the plastic in the engine exhaust trench.
Mystery gouge.jpg
At the time, I didn't think about why it was there, but decided to add it anyway since I'm trying to replicate the 5-footer as accurately as possible, warts and all. :rolleyes

But then I noticed there's a corresponding gouge carved into the upper inner edge of the engine trench.
Upper hull gouge.jpg
That's when it hit me why ILM made those mystery gouges. One of the Falcon's mounting points for the 2" support pipe was through the back engine trench. ILM used that mount for the shot in ANH where the Falcon is being tractor beamed into the Death Star hangar bay. We know it was mounted from the rear because the lower gunport gun is seen in position in the shot.

So it looks like the modelmakers made a little whoopsie while measuring the overhang of the plastic in the engine exhaust trench and needed to carve away some of the plastic on the top and bottom so the mounting pipe would fit. I'm not mounting my PG through the engine trench, but I added both gouges just for accuracy sake and, hey, because it's there!

One more thing to add to the 5-footer's lore.:cheers

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

Started the panel painting on the PG this weekend. My base coat was Polyscale Reefer White acrylic without primer. I'm adding the panels using Tamiya acrylics. I'm starting with the lightest panels first and progressing to darker, then red. I added some chipping using liquid mask, but will go back during weathering to touch up. This stage frightens me because it all looks very toy-like. I've been overspraying with the reefer white when it looks like the panels are too dark to me eye.

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

I don't think Bandai have ever announced a Millennium Falcon in ESB/ROTJ configuration. Certainly the "Perfect Grade" 1:72 kit is ANH only at the moment, though it does look like it was designed with bottom hull and mandible tip options.

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

Hey Hunk a Junk, is a masking tape technique towards the top of this panel where you dab the wet paint with tape? Looks fantastic.

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

Did some painting this weekend. I settled on medium grey as a primer. After that I sprayed my custom mix of Insignia White: Tamiya white + Deck Tan.

The medium grey adds nice subtle depth and shading depending on the amount of Insignia White oversprayed.

Im assuming the rear panel is painted with your special mix and the rest of the disc is the bare Bandai molded plastic?

Really nice! How did you bend the ends of the plates? Is the plastic easy to work or did you use a little heat?

Heat is the only way to go. The plastic is too firm and it's the only way to get a bent metal look. I just used my soldering iron and held it really close until it softened enough to bend using a wooden stick.

Very nice!!!

What did you use from the grime color on the tips of the mandibles?
Or is that just a shadow?

Correct, I meant to say that.

Don't know how well it shows up in pictures but in person the painted areas look much superior to the bare plastic.
