All Things Virtual Reality

Re: The current state of Virtual Reality: another period of gimmickry or a true start

The moving around part was already a bad thing with the Kinect.

You know, a while ago, I saw someone hack a Kinect to use for tracking, creating w PC control similar to the glove controls from Minority Report. So, maybe someone can hack together a better tracking system for use with VR.

There's apparently some new announcements for VR, which the Tested guys talk about for what happened this week:

only got to read about a few of the new things, but Oculus new asymmetric space warp lowers the min spec for the rift to about a $500 pc, pretty sweet

Oculus touch available for pre-order on Monday!

It's been a while since I posted in this thread, but I figured I'd do a post in relation to the topic of VR. Well, I've found out that there's some low costing VR head sets (around $300), but they have only rotational tracking and no positional tracking (meaning, you can do 360, but not lean in or out). One headset I've read about is called the Pimax 4K. Basically, it's touted as being a 4K resolution, though it's not really (because the resolution is counting both eye screens as one instead of individually, however, the resolution is still pretty high). Basically, the head set seems good for those who sit and game like most gamers do. However, the Pimax company is currently working on a Pimax 8K that has a headset that looks striking similar to the Star VR headset and looks to be coming with controllers this time (the 4K doesn't have any controllers). As for what it's pricing is, I don't know.

There's also another company that is releasing a VR headset for not just PC use, but for use on the go as a mobile headset. Basically, it's a portable gaming unit that can also be attached to your PC (I don't know if it has positional tracking or not, but the nifty thing is that most of the hardware that would typically be in the headset and weighing it down is actually in the system's controller, making the headset lighter but still be able to function as a gaming unit and be able to attach to the PC).

Also, I did a bit of a topic in relation to VR for a video on my channel. Basically, I have a concern about the future of machnima. I mean, it's safe to say that if VR takes off, then a majority of the games that are going to come out are going to be for VR, which concerns me because it could lead to machinima making becoming extinct. I'm sure my concerns are unfounded, but I figured I'd open the topic: the future of machinima in a VR only future - high risk of extinction or would still exist?

coolness

VR is only getting better, it's not going to go away anytime soon... i think the hype it got back in the 90's, the cost and mainstream just couldn't accept it. i had considered, redoing another home theater in my new home, pool table/shuffle board table, all of which would be over 10k. with VR, i have a dedicated room (basement) 14x10 which is more than enough room for a system and still allowing people to watch or, when i get the bandwidth, add additional headsets.

i'm looking late August early September to buy the Vive system. ;)

I thin I really need to revise my title, as we've gone well past that original topic. But I'm glad to hear your input and I do agree. The redoing of the home sounds quite interesting. :D

not to go further off topic but my home theater kicked ass. 6 leather recliners (3 higher up on a platform) with cup holders, 91inch screen, ceiling mounted HD projector and 7.1 surround.

;)

I posted a similar thread. I got a really nice headset with my Alcatel Idol 4s. Not a lot of content for it though.

One of my roommates is about to move out, so we'll have a free room for storage and I'm already figuring out how to offload some of my room junk into there, and just flip my mattress to open up my room for VR space lol

Some more videos I've come across that are VR related. This first one is something Google uploaded two weeks ago.

I came across these next two headsets from the same YouTuber. The first headset is an Open Source VR headset called the HDK2. It doesn't start off with Plug and Play capability, but it's had a few updates that allows it and this is geared more towards the Make/DIY crowd:

Another one he looks at is called the Pico Neo:

The next headset is one I mentioned previously called the Pimax 4K. It's mainly rotational tracking, but is currently cheaper than either Vive or Oculus. I've included two review videos of different viewpoints. However, Pimax is currently working on an 8K headset that looks similar to the StarVR, possibly with the same field of view.

Also, on eBay, I came across someone selling a Oculus Rift DK2 rig at the starting bid of $180. I thought about getting it, but there were two issues: the first was that I remember eating about a lot of issues the DK versions of the Rift have that the commercial version resolved. The second is that the DK2 is no longer under support from the company, which makes me a bit hesitant.

Re: The current state of Virtual Reality: another period of gimmickry or a true start

Got my Vive earlier today, finally had to chance to set it up and try it. Man I was blown away ! At first I thought the resolution was a bit disapointing, but it kinda goes away, and I've enable super sampling so we'll see tomorrow if it's better. I think I need to adjust a few seetings as well. But I've spent a couple of hours in the Lab, boy was Longbow fun ! Felt like some kind of Legolas, letting arrows flies so fast :lol My body hurts now though, but it's good, I have a few pounds I could loose anyway ! Can't wait to try different games now.

Re: The current state of Virtual Reality: another period of gimmickry or a true start

Longbow in The Lab is great fun. The resolution is a small issue still at this stage, but you get so into it you dont notice. Its only really a problem trying to read small text, usually when playing stuff not designed for VR to start with, or virtual desktop, etc.

in other news, Lone Echo is supposed to come out July 20th or so. Preorder notice popped up in the rift store. Can't wait!!

Oculus or Vive.

Theres no other choice. If you don't have the $$$ just save up for either. It's worth the wait.

Don't get a DK2. Don't get anything that's just rotational because that's no different than taping a cellphone to your face - it doesn't matter what the resolution is like.
