DL-44 / Greedo Killer build

I'm on the Denix website, checking out the Mauser C96 for my Greedo-killer build and I see they make three versions of the gun;

The Model 1024, which has a blued body with dark stained grips.
The Model 1024/Q (world war 1&2) which has a black body with lacquered wood grips.
The Model M-1024 which has a black body with dark wood grips

Can anyone advise which is best for DL-44 builds?

Re: Which Denix?

The base gun is the same, including the finish. The only difference is the grips. The wooden ones are a slight upgrade from the resin ones.

Re: Which Denix?

It depends on what Blaster you want to build.

If you want to make one based on the MGC, you better buy the one with plastic grips.
If you want to make one based on a real C96, you better buy the one with wooden grips.

Re: Which Denix?

Yeah, I kinda guessed they must all be from the same moulds. I'm just thinking about which will leave me with the least amount of work to do on the finish (I like screen-accuracy but not to the detriment of enjoying the assembly process). Obviously wooden grips are a bonus, and the ability to add further stain to them, and maybe the blackened body will leave me with minimal refinishing to match the blued add-on components.
Well that's an easy decision. The M-1024 it is!

Re: Which Denix?

Well, it's unimportant now because I just bought an all metal Marushin Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer with wood grips in unused and unfired condition. 7.63mm with ten round mag. Functions, field-strips and fires full auto with 7mm plugfire blowback. Going to be a lot of fun. The first thing I have to do before I can play though is work out how to strip the gold and chrome off it so I can blue it properly.

If the pot metal takes the bluing solution. Wonder if you could bead blast the chrome off. BTW, that one is probably more inaccurate to the Greedo killer than the Denix. Wow, did I just say that?

Re: Which Denix?

Whatever you do, don't use a caustic bath to strip it... Like one plate house just did to mine against my wishes...

Re: Which Denix?

If you're going for a TFA then that Mauser is perfect
I also think that a simple paint job would be better for a TFA version than going through the work of sanding and blueing.

Ouch.. I hope you were well-compensated for that goof. I suppose that you could fill it with epoxy putty or similar.

I once left a Denix's bolt stop in a jar of vinegar to strip the bluing, which within minutes dissolved it down to a black, fuzzy, pea-sized pebble. I had to scratch-build a new one.

Which Denix?

Yeah, after a very long and heated conversation, we worked it out. I'm now in the acceptance stage of grief... I'm going to try some filler and paint to see what can be salvaged. When they called me they described the condition as "some pitting" lol. Completely ridiculous.

Re: Which Denix?

The MGC is made of the same family of metals as the Denix, and that makes it relevant.

I would try epoxy putty with some pigment kneaded in. I have previously filled Denix with metal shavings but how much that takes bluing varies a great deal.

Re: Which Denix?

I have it on good authority from a deactivated gun specialist here in the UK, who sees these regularly, that the gold finish will come off easily with a bit of Brasso and some elbow grease. He thinks the plated finish underneath will then take bluing quite well, after being 'keyed' gently.

On his thread; Thread: DL-44 Greedo Killer - start to finish (almost)

member; spoudastis suggests a commercial Zinc spray from a rattlecan, the kind you get in hardware stores to repair galvanised metalwork, will blue.
He does say that it goes on quite thick and textured and requires a bit of time to smooth and finish before bluing but the zinc content polishes and darkens.

This may be a finish to consider on pitted parts where the zinc spray will fill voids.

Re: Which Denix?

Well, here it is at last. Waited in all day for it. It's a beaut!

First thing to try; a little Brasso to see if the gold will come off as easily as I was told. Someone told me that they use real gold so, if that's true, it should be soft enough to rub away cleanly.

I'm pretty pleased with that. Ten minutes have given me a chrome finish to the mag and barrel and I haven't even taken it apart yet. I'm almost tempted to do a completely chrome and bare metal "silver ghost" version of the blaster like Toku-san did of the Blade Runner blaster from Tomenosuke.
speaking of which, the instruction sheet for disasembly and reassembly is completely.... Japanese, so I may have to source some English instructions before I take her apart or it will never get put back right.
oh, one other thing. The alloy grill from Solo's Hold is for a Denix 96 and this 712 has at least two millimetres extra width in the mag housing. Some work with files will be called for in due course.
