Complete! Cinderella 2015 Gown

Re: Cinderella 2015 Gown

Yeah, I've passed the 150 yd mark. It's getting ridiculous. Are you posting progress here? I love watching other people's progress.

And I haven't worked too much on this since I got tickets to the Labyrinth Ball at Dragon and have been busting hump to make Sarah's ballgown. I'm almost done with that so back to Cindy.

I ruffled too tightly so I need to make a few more ruffle panels to finish off the first godet layer and attach it. I'm working on the second godet layer at the moment. The skirt is going to be ridiculously huge.

Hi, not on here but on my Facebook cosplay page - Zub.Kitty Cosplay. I find the most interesting part of a cosplay is the construction!

Four more godet layers. I'm waiting on a couple of other fabrics in the mail and I can finally start on the over skirt, corset and bertha. I'll just be tidying things up and sewing these layers down in the meanwhile.

Re: Cinderella 2015 Gown

And the second I post that, my fabric arrives.

And here it is. On the right is the fabric alone, on the left is the fabric draped over the iridescent layer. There will be another skirt layer between the top fabric and the iridescent layer in the final skirt. I'm still on the fence about using the white pearlized sheer or the blue pearlized crinkle sheer for the iridescent layer. The white is more accurate to the in person gown, but the blue is a little more screen accurate? I am planning on scrapping the idea to use the same pattern I used for the pettis on the over skirts. I'll be doing double circle skirts for the outer skirts, then single circle skirts for the middle skirts.

Re: Cinderella 2015 Gown

Lovely work! And yes, some fabrics are loosely woven enough that they will shred at little hems. Especially the pearl organza as the pearl effect is a thin strip of plastic not a twisted yarn :) It simply has no friction to stay in place.

But the fabric and your care with hemming is so going to pay off!

Re: Cinderella 2015 Gown

I suspect the reason for the godets is to minimise stress on the sheer when used as the base for the ruffles. I am not sure if you have done this, but are you sewing the tops of the trinagles of the godets with the edge turned under? If not and you can stand the thought of doing so then I'd recommend turning those edges under and doing a double row of topstitching to hold them in place.
The biggest issue with the godets (for readers who come to this page without fabric engineering) is that the weight of the ruffle is well distributed along the diagonal lines on the base fabric except at the apex. Here it will be like hanging all that fabric off a single pin. So double stitching helps but so will a little triangular reverse facing that stabilises the diagonal stitches and also creates a short horizontal line of stitches to ease the pressure off the very tip. I am going insane trying to find a good searchable technical terms. I can only find arrowhead tacks or crows foot tacks, but these are meant for heavier fabrics. So the fabric facing is a better option for a sheer.

Darnit, now I really want to figure the term out! It's used on the ends of zips, the corners of pockets, to secure the insertion of ties for the backs of waistcoats etc. I know in general the arrowhead tacks are preferred but I know triangular facings are used for sheer fabrics or lining fabrics!

Re: Cinderella 2015 Gown

I was going between either turning them under at the top or sewing them straight across, then doing a more decorative stitch to the point. I'll probably just turn them under in the middling layers and leave the top and bottom layer at points for the purely decorative look.

Also, if any sewing newbies like myself run across this thread for help, let me tell you one thing: Do not sew up the back of the petticoat before you add the ruffle layers.

This is literal and metaphoric nightmare of rufflesplosion while trying to sew.

And waiting on more fabric. The story of my life. Nine costumes to go before D*Day.

Made the pattern for a circle skirt. I cut three half circles and two quarter circles for a huge top skirt. I'm going to sew the panels together, leaving the back open and the waist ungathered to make rhinestone application easier for me.

Now I need to find a good under layer for the top skirt and finish sewing the petticoat. I had to rework my idea for the corset, so that set me back a little.

Chiffon layer that will be trimmed and get a multicolor chiffon ruffle around the bottom.

All the layers need hemmed, seams pressed, waistbands put in, and ironed.

I need to cut out the bottom layer of the top skirt, but I just got the fabric.

13709910_1106717386072326_5379128543630089272_n.jpg

Not sewn up in the back, just pinned. I'm going to put the rhinestones on, then sew it up, waistband and hem. I left the back open and I'm not gathering it yet because I learned my lesson on the petticoat (which still needs four more godet layers on it, fabric is on back order until this week).

I'm thinking of adding a solid layer over the hoop skirt as I'm worried about the sheerness of the entire skirt. I'm also thinking of adding a purple layer to the middle skirt that doesn't have a ruffle. But we'll see. It's coming along.

Re: Cinderella 2015 Gown

Thanks! I hope it turns out the way I envisioned, we're getting pretty down to the wire and I'm working on about eight other costumes simultaneously.

Right now I'm gluing about 10,000 rhinestones on the top layer:

13710039_1110010899076308_7869730235320074455_n.jpg

Pretty slow going as they're not hotfix elements. I highly, highly recommend using hotfix to anyone doing this. I'm using e6000 with the jewelry glue tips which are the only reason I'm still sane right now. I started off with a pretty tight pattern but ended up spacing it out more. I'm not getting too close to the top or the bottom yet because the skirt still has to be gathered and the hem is definitely going to be taken up.

I have the fabric laid out on parchment paper as the glue doesn't stick to it as it dries. And while it's drying, for the moment, I'm going to hop on to putting the middle layer skirts in a waistband and patterning out a more opaque layer to put the last four godet layers on. Eventually I want to put all six godets and the bottom two dust ruffles onto the new petticoat.

Middle skirt layer, not over the hoop or pettis. I had to add a sort of extender/yoke to the iridescent layer since it was only 45" in width. I used a white crystal organza as the base, blue crystal organza on top of that, then the iridescent layer, set them into a waist band and they're ready to go.

13770249_1110073755736689_172683709219321512_n.jpg

I was initially only going to do a teal layer under the top skirt layer, but I decided to add a purple layer to give everything a bit more dimension. I really like the way it turned out, everything is just draped now, I'm also still working on the rhinestones. I'll be cutting the purple and teal top skirt layer and setting them into the yoke while I'm working on finishing the top skirt.

My last order of petticoat fabric should be here Monday so I'm really hoping to have everything wrapped by next weekend. Although, I'm not sure when my latest order of spiral steel will arrive.

My second petticoat and all the godets except the very top layer (fabric was out of stock and store didn't bother to tell me until I got the fabric and the fabric wasn't in it, lame!) I just need to add the ruffles and sew everything down. The back of the petti is pinned shut so I can sew everything flat, then sew it all up the back. I stacked the godets so that the ruffles would be higher and lower to puff out the hem more.

I hope to have everything on this wrapped by next weekend.

One more godet layer to sew, then I can close up the back, close up the godet skirts and tack down the final panels to the petti. I need to add the ruffle to the petti edge, then put all three pettis into their final waistband. I can almost see the end of the tunnel.

Chiffon petti layer. I need to take it up in places at the waistband in order to keep the ruffle even and just dusting the floor.

13872630_1115427041868027_1958020616894408627_n.jpg

With the middle skirts over everything. I need to even these out and hem them.

Re: Cinderella 2015 Gown

I plan on doing a lot of twirling.

Finished!.... except the closure. I'm debating on heavy duty hook and eye or industrial velcro.
