Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Luke ROTJ V2)

My first and only MGC just arrived yay. I'm going to do my ESB Han Hoth DL-44 with all "real" parts because I realized that I've almost got a full set of "real" parts for that blaster. The only parts that I'm missing are a real Thorens disk, and real scope bolts. The only parts that don't have a real source part are the flash hider and scope mount bracket and those are on the way. I'm going to have a lot of left over parts as I ordered a full set from Boba Debt. I haven't decided if I'm going to sell the extra parts or get my hands on another scope and scope bracket to complete a second ESB blaster in a more idealized weapon style.

I'm going to have to do something about that finish, it's got some rough spots and worn through to the copper in other places. I had no idea they were made in copper and plated.

They're die cast, you got a plated one that would have originally been gold to comply with a Japanese law that happened decades ago.

They were copper plated first, then chrome, then gold chrome. The gold chrome can be removed by a gentle rub very easily, so a lot look like yours now. The silver chrome and copper are very hard to remove, and any kind of chemical that can help will also damage and pit the MGC's die cast body. I used a small oscillating sander and a polishing wheel and have done about half of mine, but the nooks and crannies are hell. It is too much labour.

I tried some vinegar to speed things along and it eroded a little divot in the metal, same with brasso. I think the problem is that the plating is composed of the same material that the die cast is made from. Die cast is kind of a random mix of all sorts of stuff, copper etc. Anything that can attack the plating will also attack the gun itself in all likelihood.

Mine is getting painted. Scottjua did an awesome paint job that looked like metal. I believe it was just a flat black with a wire wool rub down.

Actually, the Han hoth body is so black in person, I believe painting it and giving it a smooth over with some wire wool would nail the look.

Mortifactor beat me...that´s exactly what you´re looking at, a stripped gold one.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Luke ROTJ V2)

Ahh, I was aware of the gold MGC's but didn't realize that this was once one. I'll probably paint it and wire wool it down.

Give it a scratch/polish and see if the copper either vanishes or increases. You might be lucky and have a fully stripped back one. It is hard to tell from the pics. The die cast is kinda dull and bluish

You can see the chrome/copper plate/die cast relative to each other on mine

I would just paint it. I have horror stories of removing the plate on these...

Delivery day and final piece day!!! My Roman's Graflex clamp just came in. I finished the assembly of the Luke V2 finally. I still need to buff down and weather the clamp a bit, but the project is pretty much done. 4 Lightsabers complete

Now I'm just waiting on parts for my Han Hoth DL-44, Luke Bespin DL-44, Han ANH DL-44, all of which could be shipped any day now. - That is not all the projects going, just the ones that have parts to be delivered soon.

:eek Wooow! Man, that looks great! :thumbsup

I cannot wait till' I get my clamp in.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Luke ROTJ V2)

So I'm still waiting on parts for like 5 DL-44's. Because I got bored and it was there I spent some money when I shouldn't have, I bought a real Hales no3 mk1 from Edraven99. Apparently I have very little self control when it people list cool things for sale on the internet, BUT it's soooo cool. Here are some pics of it. I plan to take video of my restoration of this part, less of a how to and more of a documentation, I've never done any sort of restoration so I'll be learning as I go. Also I'm wanting to learn a bit about video editing, so this is a way to learn a couple new things. I'm excited about it I've already done a bit of clean up on it (not pictured). So I guess I've started on a real parts Obiwan lightsaber even though I told myself no new projects, I consider it just upgrading an old project with real parts #loophole

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Obi wan real parts grenade)

If you have to replace any material JB weld putty (the gray stick of putty) works wonders.

I hope you can bring this grenade back from the brink, its beautiful

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Obi wan real parts grenade)

Nice! That windvane looks in remarkable shape. It should clean up nicely. Looking forward to your progress on the whole grenade assembly.

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Obi wan real parts grenade)

I kind of wanted that grenade just to see what I could do with it. It would be interesting to see how it would look with some rust removed then blu'd. I don't know much about rust removal, but kind of looks like there's still a lot of grenade under that build up.

Yeah the windvane was in immaculate condition considering the condition of the frag body. One of the main reasons I got it initially was that the propeller ring was still intact without even even a small ding or crack. That *will* definitely clean up nicely....

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Obi wan real parts grenade)

I made a video of the start of the restoration if anyone would care to watch.

Nice! Well you've already made more headway than I did on it! :thumbsup

Re: My on going lightsabers and blasters thread (Obi wan grenade restoration video Pt

Here is part 2 where I'm removing the bottom plate. Sorry about how much I say "um" and the extended crotch shot at the end.

This is awesome... I love restoration, and this is restoration porn!

I've pulled apart the firing pin section in the past, but don't remember how... it was pretty simple though.

Awesome, glad to hear you enjoyed it. That windvane will not move so I'm hoping the acid bath will free it up, I think it will.
