Ugh. Now I'm gonna have people asking me if I'm cosplaying him, when I'm dressed as the Eighth Doctor...not that it's the worst comparison, I love HP...but the Eighth Doctor is marginalized enough as it is.

with that latest trailer, my excitement for this movie is in full gear, and i'm now wanting to put together a Newt Scamander cosplay. from what i can tell, the pants and vest look like they're made of a tweed material, not 100% sure about the coat. anyone have any ideas on where we could find some of the older-era clothes he wears?

I want to do this costume too! I've been looking for an accurate coat to buy, but everything on ebay is off. They are either missing details, or have the wrong details, and all of them have rally lousy thin material rather than the heavy wool look for the coat.

I finished my scarf, but I need to redo the fringe to be longer.
The yellow has more orange in person. I will see if I can get a more representative photo eventually.

I just picked up the Hot Topic coat and quite like it. It would be nice if the trim was real leather, but all in all I'm pleased with it.

Any chance you could post some pictures of it? I'm interested in getting it aswell!

I can post some pictures when I get home, if Zeppo doesn't beat me to it. I'm honestly shocked at the quality of it. Very impressive considering it's Hot Topic.

I've been having a lot of difficulty finding though boots though. I remember last year Target had almost an exact match, but now I can't find them anywhere.

Love the scarf. Would you be willing to share the specifics? Needle size, stitches per inch/row, etc? I'm most interested in whether you knit it in the round. I never saw any purling in the movie so I'm guessing that's how it was done and the purl stitches are on the inside.

Here are some photos I took of my coat. Sorry about the wrinkles and the delay in posting. Been a busy week with work and dressing as Newt.

After having seen the movie I'm pretty sure the top pocket with the tentacle coming out of it shouldn't be there, but it is sort of a fun edition. The buttons as well are definitely a sales embellishment, but a very pretty one.. The fake leather isn't the worst.

I've had to pin the cuffs up last minute since I didn't get this in time to get any sort of real work done on it. It's also too long in the back because of this. The curse of being short I'm afraid.

Overall I have to say it's very well made considering it's a Hot Topic purchase. It has it's problems, but it does the job very well and I had loads of fun dressed up on Thursday night for the release. I will definitely be working on getting the rest of the costume more accurate for the next time I wear this. Playing as Newt is...fantastic!

I noticed while watching the movie that his boots are leather double-buckle boots. Hard to see in the promos photos because the pants are always covering the tops of them.

Those aren't the exact ones but they're the right style.

You can see them for fractions of a second in this youtube clip at about 2:16, and in this one at about 1:48. There were some better views of them in the actual movie.

They're also visible (you can just make out the buckles on the right boot) in the larger version of one of the pics in the first post.

Oddly enough, as far as I can tell these boots weren't actually invented until 1943 for WW2. I guess wizards invented them first and later us muggles borrowed the design.

If they're what I think they are, search for m-1943 combat boots to see if you can find them for sale.

The embroidery isn't accurate but the placement of the pocket is... the leather welt was a bit thinner in the movie, though, and I thought it looked like a kind of curved shape. Might've just been the way it was folded though.

I loved all of Newt's costume, but my favorite part is honestly the boots. Don't have any immediate plans to cosplay him but I'm gonna have to try to find a pair like those.

I knit my scarf in the round, as I did not see any purling either. Despite multiple swatches, I still did not get the gauge I wanted. I guessed about 6 inches wide, and that was confirmed here: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=259363&p=4064192&viewfull=1#post4064192 The actual scarf came out closer to 4.5" to 5". The stretch in the yellow pulls the scarf in more than the marl, and the marl is what I swatched to get gauge. I did 15 rounds marl and 9 rounds yellow on US 10.5 needles with 48 stitches cast on for 24 visible per side.

Thank you for the info. After watching the movie do you think the yellow is also marled? It looked that way to me in the theatre.

Those boots look great! I managed to find some cheap look-a-likes on a certain website last night. They need the double buckles added to them though. I think the boots in the movie are probably not m-1943 combat boots, but some made just for the film, but those look really close! Nice find! The Hot Topic coat isn't bad for the price. I don't like the weird symbol over the pocket though and the back of coat should me lower.

Here is a decent image of his boots that I found online.

I did not notice that in the film. I still think the yellow was hand-dyed rather than marled. Check out the fringe in the photo of it folded in the case. I was mainly focused on trying to get a decent look at how they spaced the fringe for when I redo mine rather than colors, but things seemed to decently match to me. Unfortunately, I had to mail-order the hand dyed so I could not pick out a super match, just had to guess which one was going to be closest, and the one I got did not have quite as much dark as the scarf in the movie.

I'd say you're definitely right, they are not actual m-1943s. For one thing, the combat boots don't have a separate toe piece like his do. I wouldn't be surprised if they made (or at least modified) custom for the movie, but I'm no expert.
