So, regarding the back of the box, I've been thinking... I have a book in my Small Soldiers collection where the characters are described and where some stuff regarding the merchandise is explained (it's a kids book called "Dossier from the files of Irwin Wayfair". What I write hereafter are quotes from the book, slightly adapted...
Now, considering that on the back of Archer's box in the brown box it says:

""The Gorgonite menace prows the world, searching for the lost island of Gorgon"...
"The Gorgonites are the scum of the universe, and the Commando Elite are taking out the trash!"
Gorgonite Credo: DESTROY ORDER
PROMOTE CHAOS"

one would say that on the brown box on the back of the Commandos boxes it should say something similar like: "A new age has dawned... never before have you seen soldiers like Major Chip Hazard and his Commando Elite. They await your call to ACTION! They're the roughest, toughest, coolest action figures around. They are the best of the best of the few and the proud. Together with them, you will destroy the Gorgonite enemy! The Gorgonites are the scum of the universe, but YOU and the Commando Elite are gonna be takin' out the trash!" And of course the "Built in 2-ways radio - Buy a second Commando and communicate with a friend" since that's what the guy reads on the back of Chips box. Oh, yes, and given that part of the respective writing is also in bold letters, the Commando Elite needs its own Credo... "DESTROY CHAOS PROMOTE ORDER" would be pretty lame, though ;-)
I just noticed that under each of the small Commando pics there is a description of the respective character. In my book I found the following (I know its not exactly matching the content of the yellow writing under the small pics in the movie, but whatever, its something :)

Name: Link Static
Rank: Private
Function: Communications
Favorite Weapon: Information
Capabilities: Wiring electric devices, satelite communications and tracking systems
Personality: Loves gizmos. Joined military to get access to the technology
Spoken lines: "Awaiting dispatch of orders, Sir!"

Name:
Kip Killigan
Rank: Private
Function: Assassin
Favorite Weapon: Ninja stars
Capabilities: Hand-to-hand combat specialist
Personality: Completely wired and more than a little twisted. Gleefully gets into his work
Spoken lines: "Sharp as a razor, sir!"

Name: Butch Meathook
Rank: Private
Function: Tracker, pilot, and point man
Favorite Weapon: Super octane flamethrower
Capabilities: Acts as scout and reconnaissance man. Expert sniper
Personality: Quiet brooding type. Enjoys being alone, especially when stalking his prey
Spoken lines: "Lethal at any distance, Sir!"

Name: Nick Nitro
Rank: Private
Function: Demolitions
Favorite Weapon: Multi-munitions pack
Capabilities: Sets mines and other explosives
Personality: Steady as a rock. Feels he's just doing his job. Completely dependable
Spoken lines: "Demolition is my mission!"

Name: Brick Bazooka
Rank: Sergeant
Function: Artillery
Favorite Weapon: High-pulse laser rifle
Capabilities: Ammunition expert
Personality: Gung-ho soldier. The military is his life.
Spoken lines: "Ready to go full-bore, Sir!"

The titles would have to be the same as on Chip's box, and there it says:

Name: Chip Hazard
Function: Team Leader
Capabilities: Military tactics
Strategy
Covert operations

So there is some stuff that is comparable between book and box writing in the movie... at least the yellow lines under the small pics are three as well, i.e. name, function and capabilities... what do you guys think?

Also, I just found out that in front of the boxes where there is the name of the figure it also says their domain... Troglokhan is the "Gorgonite Barbarian", Slamfist is the "Gorgonite Enforcer", Chip Hazard is the "Platoon Leader"... Under this in the second black box it says right next to the green dart/triangly what special equipment/weapon etc. is included with the respective figure: Slamfist comes "With Super Granite Mallet" and Chip Hazard comes "With Super Action Machine Gun". Next to the right dot under the green dart/triangle it says: "Lifelong Lithium Procad Battery", same as on the back of the box.

Awesome! I think we can put something credible together using this as reference. I'll play around with things a bit later, it's still early for me here but I know it's later where you are. I'll let you know what I come up with and we can edit it as we go. I'm having great fun to say the least :)

image.jpgimage.jpgNot much in terms of an update but I've mounted punch it & scratch it to their working bases. Ive started roughing punch it's body but not much I can do with my clay reserves running low, I don't suppose anyone out there would mind sending me some oil based clay XD a simple $1.00 donation to my patreon profile https://www.patreon.com/Jok3r0314 from a few of you would suffice in terms of acquiring more clay.

image.jpg Decieded to mess around with some line art for kip, needs a lot of work but it's going rather well. Once I get this to where I like it, I'll be able to head over to the pc and start digitally tracing the finalized line art. After that I'll be able to see what I can do in terms of color and finally add some shading. If he comes out well, I'll start tackling the line art for the other commandos. I'll keep you all posted. Don't hesi to leave your feedback.

Adam rifkin, one of the writers for small soldiers shared my progress on this project with his 11k followers on Twitter. He even mention he working on getting a sequel made but he can't say much on the topic. Pretty sweet that we're gonna be able to see these guys on the big screen again. I just hope they don't do a full cg film. Hand made real life props is the best way. Only time will tell.

Sat in front of my crappy pc today and checked to see how feasible converting my traditional sketch to a full in digital image. I was skeptical at first and highly doubtful to be honest but after all the components came together, I feel like I may just be able to do this box art justice. With that said I'll leave you all with my progress. Let me know what you all think :) image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Today has been fun for me. I pcked up a $130 scanner for $20 received my small soldiers trading cards in the mail, and I've gotten a few responses from some people who were or are directly involved with small soldier (past or future). I reached out to Adam Rifkin in hopes to finding some reference materials for this project. He then referred me to Stiles white, who also worked on small soldiers, he also responded with encouraging words to say the least :) so he's looking into what he may have. Finally Stan Winston schools took notice of my progress and seemed pretty pleased with my progress, so much so they say they are rooting me on and can't wait to see my collection. xD im pretty happy if I do say so myself. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

This is sooo cool! Love the artwork so far, and also the fact that you get in touch with people! I might get some reference shots from the two folders that were sold by the propstore! Dan Hill is looking into it right now. And the way the guys from the movie and SW school support you is just awesome! Let's rock'n roll! You get these darn boxes done and I'll do the content ;-) Will make some pics of the molding process tomorrow, its nearly midnight, so I'm too tired to get some shots done today. But the rubber doesn't stick to the silicone at all and neither does the paint (so far... crossing fingers and shiver...).

I'm extremely glad you like the direction is going. Thanks to Twitter I have the opportunity to communicate with these guys directly, it's amazing. I look forward in hopes that those folders have something very useful. I can't believe that I've gotten such encouragement from the guys at Stan Winston, watching that movie when I was a kid I never would have imagined I'd be in any kind of contact with those masters. It's an awesome feeling. I try to keep in mind the time zone but I just get overly excited at times, sorry about that. thats awesome, I had a feeling the silicone wouldn't stick being that the figures are made of that urathane foam since dilicone only sticks to silicone, but the paint was my concern. I await to so your awesome work. I was wondering if you could help me with bricks rifle for the front box art. I can't seem to work it out. Once I get that I'll be able to start on the digital line art. I may end up doing chips next since we have extremely clear reference for those. I still can't make out what butch is holding in his hand other than the knife so I can't really start on his either. That leaves nick or link. Personally I'd like to do nicks art because how awesome the pose is. I've run dry on my oil clay supply so I can't start on the limbs roughing for each sculpt.

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg Updating the facial features for butch and brick but I still need someone's help with what butch is holding in his left hand. Ive used a grenade as a place holder for the time being, I even considered a molitov cocktail but Id still rather something more tangible. Unfortunately my wife was in a minor collision that took my car out of commission so things will be a bit tight in terms of money and time so updates may take a while longer for the time being.

Here is my revised brick line art. I'm much more satisfied with te way his face looks now. Also I've sarted on chips lineart as well.image.jpgimage.jpg

There is a scene where Alan and Archer are standing in the destroyed store. There you can see Butch's broken box in the background with a good reference of the box art. Here is what I was able to catch from the DVD. Have no blueray, however...Butch Box good.png
In my humble opinion, Butch isn't grinning, he's just making his angry face as always.
He seems to be holding a knife, kind of a Rambo type of knife, actually. First I thought he was holding his rifle, but its too short. In the other hand, you can make out something with a small round thing on top when you light up the screen really hard (that's for the scene where Butch jumps out of his box)... I'll get back to you...

Thanks for the input, very helpful. I'll have to take a look at the hi res when I get home. I was trying to go for more of a grimace look with his teeth showing but I may have misinterpreted what I saw, I'll have to change it that shouldn't be too difficult :) i assumed he had te rifle as well but the knife is what it looks like he's holding. As for te other hand/fist now that you say the top of whatever it is he's holding has a round "top" it made me think maybe it's not a round top but rather a round "bottom", more specific the bottom of the knife? He Gould just have a closed fist in the other hand and only be holding the knife, again I'll take a better look a bit later and thanks for your words, progress is what it's all about.

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgHere's a few more shots of where archer is currently at, I know a lot needs to be changed but there's something awesome about him standing there just looking at me. Sadly I've run out of my oil clay supply so I can't even finish roughing out te rest of their arms and legs. Maybe soon I'll get that situated.
