Multicam Stargate G-8 WEP

I have watched too many re-runs of Stargate on the Space Channel and now have the WEP bug.

Really don't want the original Vietnam era shiny Nylon look. I am thinking making one either as a BDU conversion or from scratch with approx. 4.5 yards of MILSPEC Gamma 400.
Either way the finished jacket will have a modified M-65 button in liner.

From looking at pictures from show and using my A-2, think this is about right....

For those that have made or own a WEP does this look about right on the measurements?

Don't plan to start this until March so "Thanks" for the assist in advance.

Edit: Some the measurements listed above have been adjusted once I started making the jacket. Please only use as a rough guide until you figure out what looks good.

This is Gamma 400D. I read that it is an alternative to Cordura 1000D so it should make a good jacket if the sewing machine can handle it.

Here is what I think the velcro patches should look like. That is with the assumption that the patches from SciGeeks are the correct size.

Bra'zat, Thanks for the tip. I'll get with Ryan in a couple of weeks after he gets back.

Used MS Paint to draw a multicam WEP but from the look of it..... get the idea that SG1 has gone red-neck.

I can do any fabric you wish I recommend a REAL fabric that you can get some type of issued pants in so they do match! I did a NWU this past year and rolled out for Creation in Chicago for pics with Joe! My version of Navy EOD Team TDY to Atlantis!

Not to mention its the only one in the world right now and from the REAL fabric!

We also had some fun with patterns on SFH and you can check out alot more current info on the jackets there!

Re: Stargate G-8 WEP help

Hey, if you would rather buy one, check out gibson-barnes. That is where I got my jacket a few years ago for my first cosplay. It cost around 200 for the final price, so I don't know if it might be cheaper to make one. That price included them adding the Velcro where needed. Also, I live near by and was able to go pick it up in-store, so not sure how shipping cost might be. But it is a very nice jacket.

Yin, great looking SG Shield crossover. I had a look at Gibson Barnes and they only have the issue G-8 WEP anymore.... Should have got a "mountain cloth" OD when they had them.

Ryan, you look great in the NWU Type 1 WEP. The photo/protos on sicfihero look alot better than my work-up.
I am looking into some Scorpion W2 fabric or have to quickly get all the Multicam stuff I can.

Re: Stargate G-8 WEP help

I used to be a HUGE SG-1 fan, and bought myself a WEP from Gibson-Barnes like 10 years ago...it has been my "daily driver" for a jacket ever since...probably the best jacket I've ever owned.

At long last have some of the materials to start.

Decided to save the 400D Gamma for when I can get a professional made G-8 and try a BDU conversion for a quick budget jacket.
Thought it would be a simple cuff, collar and pocket re-position but it has become a complete rebuild.

I used a BDU jacket one size larger than I wear.
It became a rebuild because the tread I received was Coyote and not Tan 499 so every seam had to be re-stitched or the colors would be off.

It has worked out for the best since the cuffs and collar are going to be from coyote knit caps and the unquilted liner is also coyote.

At some point I plan to shorten a M-65 field jacket liner for a button in quilted lining.

Started off simple by making the pockets and learning how to set snaps.

I think the pockets are the biggest part of being able to pull this off.

For the gusseted back, I used the preexisting curve that was created from removing the sleeves.

I made a template using a cardboard box and shifted the top of the curve 2 inches inside the shoulder.

The inside gusset is another 2 inches inside beyond the exterior seam with another panel to have the outer edge of the shoulder where it was originally on the BDU.

To keep the gusset under control and return to its desired position. I have sewn a length of elastic on the inside.

Re: Stargate G-8 WEP help

Once the back was complete I reattached the front chest panels to the back forming a vest.... and then reassembled the sleeves.

I had to completely take apart the sleeves thanks to the way the reinforced elbow pads were stitched into one of the overlap seams.

Having the sleeves off made attaching the velcro and shoulder pocket easier.

Here is what the final measurements came out to on the finished jacket. This started as a XL long BDU for a guy that normally wears L long.

Someone with a GB or other G-8 Wep will have to chime in with the accuracy of what I did. Based on photos and looking in the mirror this looks about right.

Edit: Sorry but I can't find these images and it looks like I didn't do a good job backing up that computer.!!!!
Leaves me to wonder what else was lost with the hard drive failure.

I ran out of thread after attaching one cuff but this shows the liner.

Used the same pattern for the liner that is in the TFA Rescue leather jacket and has an internal passport pocket.

The waist band was made with the gray elastic shown on the the gusseted back and is a leftover from my TFA Hero suit.
The elastic was stretched tight and then wrapped with fabric, pinned and feed thru the sewing machine. After everything was stitched together the pins were pulled and the elastic allowed to relax resulting in the gathered look.

I attached the zipper to the bottom of the waist band, laid out the top of the zipper relative to collar and then joined the bottom of the jacket to the waist band so the zipper wasn't off.

The collar is a single knit cap sewn over the BDU collar. The original collar was removed and the pointed ends squared off. The bottom of the knit cap was cut off and then sewn on each end. This knitted rectangle, that was open on the long side bottom was then stretched over the BDU material and the bottom sewn shut.
The knitted material is free floating except for the flap and buttons and where it is attached to the jacket.
The inserted collar also helps the knit material remain standing up.

Re: Stargate G-8 WEP help

This is the finished jacket. Finished minus the modified M65 liner.

S.G. fans will quickly note: this jacket is not rip stop but the heavier "winter weight" twill, the liner is not quilted, the design of the liner is different and a few other odds and ends.

So I will just leave a comparison with the no longer produced G.B. mountain cloth.

have to call myself out for this but it took sometime to see it. I put the interior storm flap on the wrong side of the jacket.

It looked right compared to the G.B. jackets photo but looking at the actual jackets, saw the error.

Edit: Counldn't upload the photo at the time.

What is funny about this photo, and not just the wrong sided storm flap, was the fact that someone five fingered my SG-1 and Earth patches but left the Air Force patch.

I did replace the SG-1 and Earth Patch. I found a gold and black team patch that looked good with the multicam but its a little small compared to the correct Black and Silver.

Finally got a M-65 field jacket (genuine GI) liner but never sewed the mounting buttons inside the G-8 WEP.

Also, please note that I got around to fixing the storm flap.

Edit: Hindsight being 20/20, I just wish I had made a pattern when I was making this jacket.
