New project: Flex Bender 2.0

About 5 years ago I did a scratch-built mannequin, Flex Bender. We dress him up for the holidays and he's always a part of our Halloween display.

Last year Flex's knees finally gave out and he got a full-on knee, hip and elbow replacement along with new "muscles"

Unfortunately Flex had a poor surgeon (me) and the joints have disintegrated again. Rather than attempt to repair him a second time, I'm creating version 2.0 -a PVC version with no knees.

The elbows in the picture are not going to work, so they'll get a redesign, but here's where we are so far.

Re: Crazy Eric Projects - BvS Batarang

All my airbrush paints have been stored in a cardboard box -and this bugs me. I can't tell what I have or where it is.

Finally spent last week resolving the problem....

I'll be posting a longer DIY video with a bit of explanation soon.

Star Trek Beyond Coffee Mug

Thanks to snouty's thread (http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=264619&highlight=star+trek+mug) I've been wanting to make my own Kirk mug for awhile.

I picked up a mug from Walmart for a couple of dollars and did my painting yesterday. The approach was pretty simple:

1) Print template
2) Cut out paintable areas with an exacto knife and adhere template to mug with spray adhesive
3) Cover the rest of the mug with painters tape and paper towels
4) Multiple coats of black spray paint followed by multiple coats of spray laquer
5) Remove template, tape and towels
6) Use the exacto blade to clean up the edges

I'm sure this isn't dishwasher safe, but I'm very pleased with the end result.

King Arthur from Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail

Another Father/Daughter project, we assembled this costume for the 2017 Naka Kon.

The gauntlets, gloves, and shin guards are craft foam and recycled from a different costume (the plether sword belt is also homemade and from the same costume).

My daughter made the tunic while I created the sun emblem. The helmet is craft foam and was a true pain in the butt to get the shape right.

The fabric chainmail top was purchased from Party City while the headpiece (coif) is actual (inexpensive) chainmail. Word to the wise, it weighs about 15 pounds and makes your neck hurt after a day of wearing it.

Craft foam crown sealed and ready for paint (note the googly eye rivets)

An order came in for my Who Framed Roger Rabbit Toon Pistol, Dum Dums and Case.

Seemed like a good opportunity to make a Speed Build Video.

Thanks for watching!

Legend of Zelda EVA Scabbard Build

I created a custom Master Sword awhile ago and needed a light, safe-for-the-prop scabbard for it.

A relatively easy build (and of course I figured out a ton of things I'd do differently if I was going to do it again) -it took about three weekends to complete.

Enjoy!

Re: Star Trek Badges (Crazy Eric Projects)

The Kansas City Comicon was last weekend. For the last day I decided I wanted to wear something that wasn't heavy, constricting or hot. Who better than Arthur Dent?

I did a quick-and-dirty build in the morning and the prop was ready in time for lunch.

The piece is made from a USPS flat rate box cut to size and wrapped in scraps of pleather I had left over from a prior project. The lettering and logo are craft foam. I used cheap Walmart acrylic to paint and weather the piece.

Overall couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Speed Build: Giant Camera Prop - Photo Booth (Crazy Eric Projects)

Giant Camera Prop for Photo Booth

We've been having regular parties over the last year and wanted to add a Photo Booth as part of the fun.

There's a great iPad app that has photo booth functionality so the challenge was to create a fun environment for it.

The camera prop was a two-day build made from foam core, EVA foam and plexiglass.

We had a holiday party last weekend and it was a hit.

Re: Time Lapse video -Giant Camera Prop - Photo Booth (Crazy Eric Projects)

Kansas City Comicon is next month and the family decided to go as a Quidditch team.

Lots of division of labor -everyone's sewing robes, I made the brooms, and braces and shin guards are TBD (though probably be me).

Happy with the brooms; my hands are nicked up and splintered from wrapping the bristles (gloves probably would have been a good idea).

Re: Harry Potter Quidditch Team (Crazy Eric Projects)

My wife is a big fan of Firefly and (and she thinks Nathan Fillion) is a hottie.

For a Mother's Day gift I decided to make her Mal's Pistol. I used Punished Props pattern/video as a starting point (many thanks!) and modified it slightly to make the piece more accurate. (Link to punished prop build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NTw5AaoSJs&t=768s

I didn't take much in the way of progress pics. The majority of the gun is made from plywood with styrene for the smaller/thinner pieces. I molded all the pieces and then cast it in resin (including the grips).

Here's the end result:
