quick question: does anyone know why my pictures are so small in my thread? Thinking my pictures may be too big. They're each about 1.2 mb. I'd like to get them the size of the width of the thread so you don't have to click on each picture. I looked through the board settings but I cannot figure it out.

back with some more progress pic's
using drywall mud to coat the foam and harden the exterior shell
building out the supports for the shoulder armor
rear view, jet pack fit nicely but needed some more support
refining the details...adding battle scars
did not like the door hinge I had on there before, so I'm changing that
scrap piece from one of my son's transformer cars
more drywall coating
attached the lower section, filled and sanded
almost ready for primer
let's paint !
I took the main pieces into the garage for the prime coat
after the prime coat is dry...
I added the chrome base
this will not be the finished paint job but rather a multiple layered approach using the metallic chrome to shown through "paint battle damage"
the gatling gun getting a little more detail
I want this mech to look worn, rusted in spots and mostly battle proven

ok, let's keep going....
My favorite part, painting and bringing this thing to life
so my goal is to use the metalic base to bleed through my airbrushed coatings
I wanted to add the shading to the dark or black areas first
a basic dry fit to check the pose
my econo paint booth....yes, it's a plastic bin with a bath fan hooked up to a switch.
Adding some of the shading that will get built up in layers.
Mixing it up a little with the gold
starting to assemble and paint the jet pack
The black airbrushed shading will definitely be toned down once the additional coats go on.
airbrushed paint on top of enamel paint works great for chipping and scratches
ok, so these are the base coats of paint. my goal is to use chipping fluid over top of these base coats, paint the "finished" coat and scuff and scratch through.
Let's see how that will work out...first time using chipping fluid
my first try was the small armor piece under the arm (in case I screwed it up beyond repair)
2 light coats of chipping fluid and
2-3 coats of airbrush paint / white
let dry
used a toothbrush and water and started to softly scrub the surface....
...thus revealing the base coat in small random lifelike patches
once that was done, i sprayed some shading over top of that
burns from battle damage
Well, that's is for today....
any comments / advice are welcome !

kind of like assembling a model kit....many pieces !

adding some rust color to show through worn paint
getting all the the pieces....
applying a few light coats of just white...
This was my inspiration for the paint job.....sitting at a stop light and happened to look over. i want mine to be a lot more weathered though.
tried to mix up the colors a little, so added some gold and plain steel parts
instant weather ala toothbrush & water....chipping fluid works great, but definitely don't be afraid to get a good coating on !
some of the front....(wireless mouse battery cover)
taped off the glass and worked on the frame
worked the jet pack a little more and added some jet burns and soot
trying to get a good mixture of different "materials" on this mech
ok, here's a quick pic standing next to my 30" x-wing fighter for scale
more to come.....probably put another post up today if anyone is interested....lol

touched up the paint job with some black (dirt, grime, burns..) and started removing the maskings
attached the plates on the back of the claws
started adding some lettering to various parts
Can anyone guess where SB-01 came from ?
Note: I put a second coat of chipping fluid over the white. Then I masked and painted the blue. That way, when I wear off the blue, it won't affect the white beneath
kinda build it up in layers....t
checking to see how things are fittings together
It's getting closer....

Brilliant work, I'm constantly watching traffic as I drive for aging looks and trucks are worked hard so have some great aging.

Thanks Vac, I definitely learned a lot on aging working through this project. I did some research online with model & scratch builders but nature is always the best reference... People must look at me wierd when I'm taking pictures of dump trucks, backhoes, rusted up dumpsters...lol

back with some more and hopefully be finishing this up soon....
moving on to the details, base, wiring and final paint job.
first i wanted to add more details such as wiring "internally"
the grey wiring is actually from an old wii sensor
fishing it in and out to add some visual interest
working on both arms
had some black wiring I used to simulate hose to the claws
some electrical flex conduit found at the local lowes...
.... attached to both arms and will eventually connect to the body
checking the fit.....

ok, so I got a little tied up last night....so here's some more
hoses and wires con't...
rub' n buff to help achieve "worn" metal edges....love this stuff !
just using a tiny amount on my finger and rubbing the corners and edges
hoses and wires will need to be weathered as well
running more wire
in between paint coats, I decided to work on the base
my favorite, foam board
did a bathroom remodel and kept some of the destruction for my model
just checking the weight, kinda heavy so I'll probably have to reduce the amount I use
for some reason, I just love the black and yellow hazard symbols....
found a few choice locations were we don't want people stepping
coat of yellow...
taped off and coated black
viola
always paint in new condition and "weather" later
Well, that's it for now.....

So I'll throw a few progress pic's before I leave

testing some flashers....
I decided to light it after the fact, so having to route wires now....

bringing up the rear
will have the wires run under the foam base to switches
starting to paint her up

taped and sprayed a few lines...much better than the guy in our town....you'd swear they were drunk.

Hello...Almost to the end !
Ok, I was working on the base last I posted.
This will be the second to last post. I'll pretty much finish things up here and maybe touch up a few things before I take it outside for some FINAL photos
working to add more details to the base
airbrushing and adding more greeblies as I go...
test fit
added a fallen street light made from balsa and to be wired underneath
printing my own waterslide decals
decided to add a stop sign. balsa, chrome paper, and decal
Since I didn't decide to add lights until it was almost done, it was definitely a pain
drilled a few holes
fed wires up underneath and led's in the cockpit
Wires runing down the legs through the base
again, I probably could have planned this better, but kinda flying by the seat of pants now because I can see the finish line.
Wires fed underneath but I didn't really figure out where to put the battery packs.
I have 1 pack from a set of Christmas lights that has BLINK, ON, OFF and one standard ON OFF pack
I figured the easiest way to hide them would be up top on the base
The blinker pack got a crate look and the standard will just get just a painted disguise.
I did not glue the crate on but rather made a snug fit so I can easily remove when needed.
Well, that's it for now.
Next post will be the final photos !
I'd like to get some good outdoor shots....So hopefully the 70 degree Maryland days we've been having in December will stick around.

When I finished it up, I put it on the counter, my wife comes in and asks "so now what are you going to do with it?" I had to laugh because I hadn't really thought that far ahead. Oh well, it's displayed in basement for now.
I still need to get some good final photos but the weather has not been cooperative....and it's dark by 5pm !
