The Black Pearl Wooden Model Kit

Have made some crates out of Balsa wood and now with asmaller battery will be able to conceal it a bit better, Glued some magnets to the battery holder and then other magnets on the underside of the deck, this way when changing the battery it will always snap into the same position and wont move about.

I have no idea how long these little 12V batteries are going to last running these lights, I have not worried about soldering resistors on to my led's as they came with inbuilt resistor.

Pics on how the battery is hidden. You can also see the two(2) little magnets glued in place.

Have painted and added the cargo, a few pics of what the lower deck looks like before gluing the upper deck inplace, then a couple of pics with the lights on. Next will be the first layer of planking.

WOW! It has been a while since my last post/update. I am still working on this.

As you can see from the pics I have got the sides on and have started the planking. It's a slow process, but one that I want to get right.

I'm so glad to see you are still at it with this model. I've been wondering how it was going because I finally pulled my Pearl hull into my shop so I can try to move ahead on it.
I need to get going on the hull planking.

Again, if there are any areas of the Pearl shooting model that you need reference of, just let me know. I have a TON of pictures.

Still at it, taking my time plodding along. Would like to see some pics of your model, if you don't mind.

Will definitely take you up on those photos. Thanks

Finished one side of the first layer of Planking. All went well, no real major issues and happy with the result, soaking the planks then steaming them with a plank bender works well. Really glad that I took the time to reshape the hull.

Also made some clamps out of wooden clothes pegs for those tight narrow gaps.

Can't take credit for the clothes peg idea, saw that on the internet somewhere. Hopefully the foil will reflect more light and make the cabin lights brighter.

Lee7 asked for some reference photos of the main deck looking towards the foredeck. I figured they would be helpful to this project so I thought I'd post 'em here.

These pictures are of the version 2 Pearl, which was built for the second film. It differs from the version 1 Pearl made for the first film. The design changed because the live action Pearl for the second and third films was built over an existing ship (the Lady Washington, I believe) which was close in shape, but different enough to justify building a second miniature. (The live action floating set for the first film was built on a barge.)

This is the foredeck.

This is a cool shot. This is the foredeck and part of the main deck taken when we had the Pearl hung upside down so we could shoot the sails flapping "under water" before the Green Flash event in the 3rd film.

I hope this answers some questions and inspires others!

Great pics John, many thanks for posting them, hope they are as much help to Vj as they are to me, just while I'm typing Vj, any luck with part 51 yet?

Cheers for those pics Duncanator. Do you have any of the hull and cabin, for planking references.

Lee, I have done some digging and come up empty on part 51, as I have bits and pieces and lighting on the lower deck I will probably just glue the cargo hatch open (both of them) so that you can see inside.

Yea I'm going to do the same, I think it's a mistake in the plans, I was going to try and make a hinge but don't think it would look authentic. Thanks for all the help so far guys.

Here's some pics of the Pearl's planking. You'll see that the colors vary depending on the light and location I took these. The basic color is black, and then there are a ton of weathering layers.

This one shows the whole side. I hope you can make out the planking pattern.

Here's a closer shot of the Captains cabin planking.

I'll be back later with more.

Ok! I had some more time to post a few more....

Excellent pictures, much appreciated, Thanks.

I was pretty sure what way to run the planks but just needed to be certain, didn't want to do the work and find out it could of been wrong. As far as progress goes I have finished the first layer of planking, just need to get some car filler, then fill in the gaps and sand down and make sure the hull is shaped properly. Will post some pics soon.

Thanks again for those pics.
