Another Apollo project - LLRV 1/18 scale

shaunsheep, give the ants a break; the original workers have been replaced by new staff and the "on-the-job-learning" is difficult at best. :D;) So, yeah...any progress?

Hey, guys, thanks for the kind words! Really appreciate your stopping by! Sorry about having no updates on this -- was sidetracked again; got bitten by the F-14 bug. I'll try my best to get back to this soon, hopefully. Hi Asalaw, thanks - I use Solidworks . Hey, Gag, that's an enormous compliment, thanks! Funny, that's what I see about your builds and everyone else's here. I do wish I did this for a living. I look after voip networks now -- nothing glamorous but pays the mortgage. I used to work on helicopter airframes though, and my love for aviation stuff hasn't waned after all these years. You might find it corny but I think I still have the heart of a kid -- I still get a kick out of watching planes take off and land!

Hi guys, thanks! Really appreciate that you're still following, even though the build is slow. Some progress on the gimbal. It's like a universal joint for swinging the engine up to 6 degrees to tilt the LLRV so the landing site can be viewed better. The inner frame is round on LLTV but is squarish on the LLRV -- I decided to build the LLRV2 which Armstrong ejected from (which at that point had already been upgraded to have LLTV controls as well an enclosure for the cockpit.)

tn_1200_82b80c262530d1f5355bdbfc51dba8da.jpg.pngHello! I just found this thread. Great work you have done! I worked on the miniature LLTV for the HBO series "From the Eartn to the Moon". A long time ago. Any chance there will be a kit or files to print/work from when you are done?

Thanks, guys! : ) Sorry I don't have updates but hope to get back on this soon. circa1964, thanks! I've been longing to find someone who worked on that model! Did you work off of any blueprints -- or the LLRV itself at Dryden? And was your frame made of real metal rods welded together? I saw the model in the series and it looks fantastic! I've also come across a picture of the model sitting beside the real aircraft -- It's a beautiful model! Yeah I can make them available once the 3D model is completed. I'm really hoping to get references regarding certain areas that are not very visible.

Blueprints or drawings of any sort were scarce. We were able to go out to Edwards and photograph the real thing. But, it was just a frame at that point. They had stripped out the engine, gimbal, controls, etc. And yes that's one of the two finished models we made on display. I did the metal work on both. All made of thick wall brass tubing silver soldered together. THAT was a lot of work. But it was rock solid once done. We were working from a lot of black and white pics. It was really tough getting good reference. If you are on Instagram search me at: circa1964. I have posted (down in my feed a bit) some pics of it being built. Not sure I held onto the scant reference I had. Mike/circa1964

Sorry for necro-posting : ) I was really thinking of starting a new one but I might end up posting 2 or 3 threads of the same topic with so much space in between updates so I'll just go ahead and post my update here. Will try posting updates more often.

The model is far from complete, but here's some more renders, just to give an idea of what the model looks like in plastic:

Here's some pics of the scratchbuilt rear tray/electronics gear. Enjoy the pics because this was before it was squashed under some boxes while moving. Another reason why I feel the need to just 3D print the thing -- less grief after accidents. My only problem is the parts have to fit in the printer, so I'm thinking of a 1/24 scale version as well.

This is how I cut up the legs for printing at 1/18. It's only a portion of the legs -- had to make the cuts at non-ideal spots but couldn't print the whole quarter leg as it's too big for the build plate on the older printer.
