Blade Runner SUSHI BAR + SLICE OF LIFE making of

Hey thorst! You have really put a different perspective to the problem :). But my fear is that in upside-down case the gravity wouldn't made its job and suspension wouldn't work.
I'll try guitar strings first and we'll see..

Yes gravity might be an issue, however, if you balance the counterweight well it might look good. Depends on how loose the suspension is. But if nothing else helps it might be worth a try...

Fabulous work. Regarding the strings - could you put a fairly long support rod out the back and counterweight it? The smoke/atmos would hide any rod shadow and you could still get a good bounce on the drop. Rather like Cameron did with his queen alien..

Depending on the set-up, you could do the contrary: move the landing pad toward the car. Or, attach the car to a piece of clear/no reflection glass and then lower the glass + car onto landing pad.

Ah, sure, I could delete wires in post- I do that stuff for a living actually. I did tons of rotoscoping and deleting on commercials. The program called Mocha is very good for that.
But the thing is I would like to do as much as I can "in camera" and correct as less as possible in post. I love when I see a wire or some other hint at "how they did" in the older movies, so I would like to evoke that feeling with this film too..

Even in Blade Runner when the spinner starts to ascend you can obviously see the wires that he hangs on from a crane. so.. :)

Yep, the "in camera" stuff is always fun and hard to do, that's why I always used clear glass, moving ground instead of moving the object, using water tanks (flying a space ship through the door of a pod bay is easy when you tilt said pod bay and let the ship literally float toward it ;)). Of course, in your test, your lighting was behind the wire, hence seeing it and its shadow on the hood. Keep up the good work!

Well

You could drop the model, and cut before it bounces away - that's how they did the Aries in 2001: a space odyssey

or

Shoot looking up with the wires going up and away from the camera. That way the car will hide the wires. Have magnets and steel involved so that the car attaches when it lands.
Not fully vertical will allow gravity to swing the car 'down' into shot.

Cheers

Jim

Hi everybody!

Recently I started making the searchlights from the car test shot. They are at car scale, so around 12cm high.
The main body was made from cardboard pipe:

Then i glued some styrene pieces, and kitbashed it.

After primer:

After a coat of light grey:

Then I painted it. I used most of the techniques. Dark wash, oil paints.. I really like to make rust with kitchen sponge (rough part of sponge). I just dip it in paint and lightly touch the corners on the model. good effect!

Next I'll make the front glass and maybe even grilles..

See ya!

Thanks guys! :)

Yesterday I finished the searchlights. I started with the base. Just wood, plastic, computer parts.. the usual stuff..

I cut the front glass from a CD case, and glued some model parts on.. The shutters are plastic too. I only made one because I fear it could block too much light, so I'll leave it like that until we test it again. I maybe even like the look of it all with just one shutters..

And here it is, painted and rusty. I'm pleased, can't wait to see it in action :D.

Oh, Mike, I don't think it can catch fire. We use very directed spotlights to light them, so they can be 10cm (4 inches) behind them which is enough for ventilation.

See you soon!

They're not going on the Sushi bar model. They are made in the car scale for some shots of the car landing.
But they're basically bigger versions of these tiny lights:

YO GUYS!!! I can't believe 3 weeks have passed since my last update!?!

Yes! I have some updates!! I finally have a few free days to spend in the workshop and build something!

During last couple of weeks we only managed to do a couple more tests, but this time live action, not miniatures! Those were only lighting tests of the car interior and we filmed them in a random temporary car which won't be in the film. We'll rent a proper retro car when the time comes. Here are some stills:

Most of these props and monitors inside are just temporary, real ones are not yet finished..

We tried to achieve that specific eighties -cyan/magenta- color and atmosphere. We are filming on Black magic 4K camera, and I must say 4K resolution is.. well.. camera porn!! :lol Its HUGE! You can see every detail.. We are very satisfied with that camera!

Okay, so I decided to finish the car model! *** I must apologize for the quality of photos. I borrowed my Canon camera to a friend, and all I had is my cheap, crappy cellphone. :thumbsdown

I started by making this huge chunk of monitors that will be on the passenger's seat.

It's a quick and dirty build! In the darkness of the cabin only contours will be seen, so I'm sloppy and fast! :) Paint makes everything look better anyway, right?

Here I drybrushed it. Also I've made the screens, and put some colored foils inside:

I just glued some junk in the car too:

All together - not bad I think! The seat is made from cardboard and taped all over with masking tape to give it some wrinkles!

OK, I tried to find some kind of G.I. Joe in scale for a driver, but nothing turned up.. So today I made my own puppet. :lol
Introducing Twigman:

That's just his bones. Twigman's hands were made from wire and masking tape:

Due to inexplicable loss of a couple of progress photos (cheap cellphone), we now jump to the finished thing. I basically wrapped Twigman with paper and sellotape and glued some kind of fabric to simulate clothes.

He looks like he is immersed in his thoughts.
So in the end here is a test with lights on. Again, cellphone sucks in this type of situation especially..

When i get my camera back I'll try to make a proper photo..
That's it! I hope I'll have something new soon, and not after 3 weeks. :behave
