Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special Prop Discussion Thread

I'm going to start drawing artwork for the Moment in the next few days. Almost the whole thing is made on a laser cutter/engraver, so I should be able to knock it out in a day or two once the art is done. Loved the idea of the Moment for years, glad to see it looks awesome.

I found a very similar paperweight on ebay tonight. It's tinted orange but it's a step in the right direction.

It's listed under "GALLIANO FERRO Murano SOMMERSO Orange Window Facet Decorative Desk Paperweight!"

So do you think anybody is going to jump on making a poster of Gallifrey Falls? Obviously not accurate size, but if they turn out one the same size as that mondo version of the Van Gogh painting that would be pretty cool.

Btw, do we have any idea the size of the moment? I've guessed the wooden beams are about 1" to 1 1/4", leaning towards the upper end. If they're 1", the box itself is 10", 1 1/4" beams make for a 12" box.

I took a few snapshots of the episode tonight. They will do until we can get some hi-res images.
I've had some problems with photobucket tonight but they appear to be resolved. I'm going to upload several images of a few props in a few posts.
First, the thing that goes ding:

Thanks for those screenshots :)

Yeah, I definitely thought paperweight when I saw the stasis device. Haven't found the right one yet (or the correct term for a sphere with flat faces), but this paperweight I found is right as far as shape goes:

From my research so far, it is referred to as a 4+1 facet paperweight. They only count the side facets, exclude the base entirely and the top is the +1.
There's a problem with that, though. That's collector terminology. Unless it's colored, vintage or has some kind of art inside, it doesn't appear to be of any real value / interest to a paperweight collector. So now we know what a collector would call it, which is the only real identifiable terminology to use, but a collector wouldn't have one because they don't care about it. Most vendors would be laymen and would call it a 4-sided paperweight or something, which doesn't help much because there are millions of those.
I posted on a few paperweight collector forums and was largely scoffed at. Ah well.

This cut doesn't otherwise have a specific name.
It appears to be about 4 inches x 4 inches, thought I'm not positive about that, and most off the shelf paperweights of a similar cut are 3.5-4 inches wide / tall. I'm still convinced it's an off the shelf item.

All 3 of those sides are visible in the episode, there's still one missing. That is a good shot, though.

That's a great find! Makes me want the CO WD Sonic even more now.

I know Risu had asked in a different thread about the clasps used on the Rubbertoe Vortex Manipulator. Nick has posted up some pictures on his page that include the clasps. These would be a good resource for someone making a replica. If that thing was $215 instead of £215 I'd be all over it. I'd love to own one of these.

There are some things I like about his new design, mostly on the computer section. It is kind of cumbersome, though. A bit larger than the original. The switch to all brass hardware makes sense, but I liked the old buckle, and the ones he's used there are not only the wrong style given the strap design (you shouldn't use a center bar buckle if you have a leather keeper) it's also a 25 cent buckle you can buy at most leather stores. The leather also looks really stiff. Looks a bit more durable and I'd probably have one, too if the price WAS $215 instead of pounds, but I'm going to pass for sure.

Got my War Doctor's Sonic today, so here's a scan of the packaging if anyone needs it:

If you need a bigger scan, pm me :)

Darran, any chance you could scan the outside blue parts of the packaging too, please? I'm pretty sure that the circular patterns on that will match up with the design on The Moment. It might help to get everything lined up, is all. I might be wrong also, just looks that way to me.

Thanks for posting the scan^^^

In case anyone missed them, here are a few more threads / links about the props from the show.
