Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

YES. So good. It's really really coming together! Can't wait to see what you have planned for the wings!

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

Wow the head looks amazing. You work ridiculously fast!
Such a great design

They didn't have any other colour. So...smaug is a smurf now. I'll be sanding the horns outside today (nice weather) but I won't do a lot more, since my hands are painful (regular job) and need rest before I start again monday.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

This is coming along really nicely! Excellent paintjob on the armour as well. Is that brushwork or do you own an airbrush?

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

That is really well done. I would not have guessed that this was mostly drybrushing, I haven't really seen it used on such a large scale before.

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

Smaug Cosplay:
Head; skull with silicone skin and removable horns:

  • [x] General shaping of both jaws
  • [x] creating the skull of both jaws
  • [x] Sculpt the dragon skin and small horns
  • [ ] Sculpt the tongue
  • [x] Sculpt the teeth
  • [x] mechanism for jaws
  • [x] Test visibility
  • [ ] Eyes with LED’s embedded, cast in resin (See Kamui cosplay)
  • [ ] Mold and Cast the skin in Silicone (dragonskin)
  • [ ] LED’s in throat (orange/red/yellow)
  • [ ] Flabby ‘skin’ at the lower jaw to cover neck.
  • [x] Sculpt the horns (Possibly in Worbla. Seems to work well, make them removable. Magnets or screws.)
  • [ ] Padding
  • [ ]Assemble and test
Chest; Scalemail shirt with breastplate and pauldrons.

  • [x] Create breastplate, including coins
  • [x] Create pauldrons
  • [x] Make a pattern of the pieces which will need scalemail
  • [ ] Make the mail
  • [ ] Sew the chainmail to the shirt
  • [ ] Connect pauldrons and chestplate with straps
  • [ ] check if straps disappear in the scalemail (small threads)
Arms & Hands; Latex talons/claws with worbla bracers, connect to wings.

  • [x] Sculpt claws
  • [x] Mold claws
  • [x] Cast claws in latex
  • [ ] Paint claws, possibly airbrush.
  • [x] Create bracers
  • [ ] Figure out where to put the connecting piece for the wings.
Waist: Belt with tail attatched and scraps of fabric for movability.

  • [x] Create belt
  • [ ] Create the animatronic tail
  • [ ] Connect electronics, do not forget an on/off switch.
  • [ ] Program arduino to snake-like movements
  • [ ] Test the tail
  • [ ] Make the tail dragon-y with foam filling and leatherlike skin. Maybe pleather.
  • [ ] connect the tail to the belt
  • [ ] Make sure the tail can be tucked in somewhere, for sitting purposes. Or easily removable.
  • [ ] Test tail again.
  • [ ] Add fabrics in black and maybe white, scorch them for fire-y effects
  • [ ] If necessary, add extra straps.
Legs and feet; Trousers that look like I have dragon legs, with the digitigrade look. And dragon feet.

  • [x] See the tutorial at: Matrices.net
  • [x] Make patterns
  • [x] Sew trousers together
  • [x] add foam
  • [x] Decide for reptile pleather/leather or create a pattern.
  • [x] Find comfortable shoes
  • [x] Create leather/pleather boots
  • [ ] Use leather layers to create the talon-look used for the hands
  • [x] Again, refer to the tutorial.
Wings; Framework that opens with arm movement.

  • [ ] Follow tutorial for articulating framework on indestructibles.
  • [ ] When framework is done, plot out possibilities for dragonwings
  • [ ] Use pleather or a thin layer of silicone (with texture) for the wing membrane.
  • [ ] Paint the wings accordingly.
  • [ ] Make a pleather/leather cape, long enough to cover the framework, short enough to showcase most of the tail
  • [ ] Add spikes to the cape
  • [ ] Paint cape with the by now familiar paintscheme.

I updated the list and calculated where I stand. At this point I've hit the 33,33% mark. This means I'm one third on the way to completion!

It's not programmed yet at all. This is just the raw tail. I also bought supplies for the wings.

Right now, this weekend will be less active, because the last two days at work killed me, and when I woke up everything hurt. So I need to chill out. Tomorrow I will create some patterns for the legs, close the lower jaw a bit (for the throat) and start sculpting the tongue maybe. It depends a little on how my body reacts.

Still no Scalemail. I contacted the ringlord, and they said the package hadn't returned to them, so it's probably still travelling. I figured customs might be wary of 3000 jumprings and 1500 scales...

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

This is looking great I'm impressed with the detail so far keep it up I look forward to the progress

Re: The Hobbit - Smaug the magnificent [Human form]

I started working on the tongue. However, before I got to fill in the sides and make the tongue higher/bigger, my arm started complaining.

And since I need my arm for my dayjob, I quit for today.
